Two of the greatest scifi movies ever made, now on sale for under $25 each. Alien 4K and Aliens 4K from Amazon. Both movies are UK disk versions - same blu ray region as Australia, and 4k discs are (almost without exception) regionless.

UPDATE - adding in True Lies on 4K as well. Yes, it's digitally over-sharpened. But at least it's not DVD, right? $25.52, was $31.66, plus Titanic was $32.67 now $28.40

    Alien 4K is a great transfer. Highly recommended.

    Aliens 4K is a bit of an abomination. James Cameron has gone overboard with digital processing on his 4K releases and the results look less like film and more like fake and rubberish AI. Better sticking with the regular blu-ray if you already have it.

        Yes, and I'm glad the film grain has been cleaned up. I know that's how it was filmed but I found it rather irritating.

      I actually didn't mind Aliens, but the constant change between some scenes having zero grain and others being "grainy enough' was a bit jarring lol.

      I got it in a sale a while back for around $23.00, It wasnt as bad as some of the reviews made it out to be but it certainly has moments of plastic looking people. It sounds great on a home theatre which is the reason I got it.
      When it's not looking like some AI upscale nightmare it's still kind of odd watching it and the picture is crisp and clear considering it was released in 1986.

      A few scenes in Aliens have actors faces slide around like oil on water. It's revolting if you notice such things.

      unless you're torrenting a 50gb file, you're getting a compressed version of what's on the disc. Discs include uncompressed Atmos soundtracks, and generally guarantee some form of HDR. These things are unreliably available on Torrents. Uncompressed Atmos isn't available at all on streaming services.

      Quality mostly. No stream can match the bitrate of a disk. And we’re talking 60-100GB per movie if you want the same quality from a torrent.

      I get why most people would choose streaming, but I love owning the things that make me happy :-)

      Not sure about others but for me personally downloading 100gb 4k movies would take all day on my terrible NBN internet.

      I can't speak for others, but my reason for 'panic buying' (lol) 4K in the past month, is because Sony announced that they are planning to stop releasing games on disc by 2028. Pair this announcement with streaming killing 4K/Blu-ray/DVD (leading to declining sales, and discs going out of print as a result), as well as the limited availibility of 4K players with Dolby Vision… I am worried that this Sony announcement marks the beginning of the end for physical media.

      I won't repeat what others have already said about the benefits of physical media over streaming or torrent rips.

      Mate, a measly $24 gets you a full 50GB 4K movie + special features. This comes on a durable disc in a case you can put on your bookshelf as well as the legal licence to watch it.

        Plus these are bloody cheaper compared to when they were at a new release price. I got Aliens and True Lies at $60-$80 a pop. I purchased Titanic (pre-ordered before the release date) at well over $100 thinking it was going to be a limited run and wouldn't see any copies after a while…. months later it dropped to under $50. I Cheapest I have seen it go for was $19.

          I felt a bit bad then when Amazon said I could get Alien, Aliens and Romulus for $75. I’ve definitely spent double that on them…

            @Not Applicable: The price we pay for needing it NOW lol. I thought the True Lies 4K was alright….. but I'm also one that thought the dvd version was good too (single layer transfer)…. held up well on my 4K tv (aside from a few explosions looking iffy lol).

            I was curious reading about the older bluray transfer Mentiras Arriesgadas (was only ever released in Spain). I imported it in November last year, too much Arnie is never enough.

      I’ll always buy 4ks except when a studio (profanity) up the 4K release and castrates the audio compared to the regular bluray forcing me to choose thunderous and immersive audio vs a lifeless dull flat dreary atmos track.

      Looking at you master and commander. No, when they do that I download the 4K torrent and the bluray torrent pull the LFE out of the 7.1 bluray track and replace the LFE on the atmos track and repackage the mkv. Yep (profanity) Claude just reading the nuts ripping it a new one. Cuts off on the 4K at 25hz AS WELL AS the volume of the 30-60hz being significantly lower. Claude does a better job than you faggots editing these tracks. (profanity) you (profanity) you (profanity) you shitty (profanity) studio. I’m the one laughing now with my 4K DV picture and atmos track with LFE from the bluray. Eat a dick I paid nothing at all for your shitty release and that’s as much as you deserve.

      I've spent probably tens of thousands on home media. I do download most stuff now though. I get the full remux file half the time if I really like the film. A compressed version for others. Always with losless audio. We wouldn't have these files to download if people weren't buying them though! Someone has to buy the disc first to upload it to the internet. If its streaming torrents being downloaded then audio is always poor, even if you have a good system. These days video quality is good for streaming with over 20mb/s bitrate and most having dolby vision. Same deal with uploading that file. Someone still has to purchase it first. We are lucky theres generous people who do all this to let people round the world have it for free

      I just want to move (partly) back to actually owning stuff. And then I want to own it in the highest quality.

      Having said that, I’m not paying a cent for some upscaled AI-enhanced copy, sold as an Ultra HD edition. I rather have the Bluray if that was already remastered.

      The quality isn't the same, and you don't really own digital goods. There's been plenty of cases where the media you paid for suddenly isn't available anymore. If you have it physically you have some measure of control over it.

      Quality on disc is usually better than streaming. Its usually a higher bitrate even if the streaming service offers a 2160p 4k option. Plus you dont need to pay multiple subscriptions to different companies to find the movie you want.

      The main reason is quality. Under the right conditions a large OLED TV in a dimly lit room with a good surround sound system a 4K Blu-ray disc can look noticeably better and sound significantly better than even the highest quality digital purchase because it uses much less compression.

      That said, for watching on a phone, tablet, laptop, or even casual viewing on a TV, most people probably won't notice much, if any, difference. Digital purchases are far more convenient since your library is available almost anywhere without needing a Blu-ray player.

      So it really comes down to priorities: if you value the absolute best picture and audio quality, physical discs are still the gold standard. If you value convenience, digital is hard to beat.

      As others have mentioned, there's also true ownership you don't need a subscription, monthly fees, or an internet connection to watch your movies.

        It’s something you have to experience. Then you’ll know. If you ever get the opportunity to watch a movie on a properly decent almost home theatre, check your bank account first. If you have the funds to buy yourself a decent setup then by all means hear and see and feel the difference. But if you want to spend $5-$10k (ok I spent more haha) on your home cinema then DEFINITELY don’t do what I did and listen to one 😬 Hooked me real good and proper.

      A) Quality is better. Especially sound. This wont matter if you have a small TV and a sound bar.
      B) I own it. No internet connection needed. When the service you bought from shuts down , and it will. I'll still own my discs.
      C) For some reason my brain finds it easier to remember what I have if its in a shelf.
