EV Novated Lease 7.66% p.a. (1% off Standard Interest Rate, Save up to $1734), Include EV Charger for $35 P/M @ millarX

210

We're taking 1% off our interest rate on every EV financed through a MillarX novated lease (5 year lease only).

  • Standard rate: 8.66% p.a.
  • EV rate: 7.66% p.a.
  • Saving: up to $1,734 in interest over a 5 year lease compared to our standard rate, and up to $15k compared to other providers

No brokerage, no junk insurance, and the rate and every fee is printed on the quote.

How to get the discounted rate

You can use our calculator to check different cars, lease lengths and prices. It uses our standard rate of 8.66%. To get the discounted rate, submit the quote through to us with a note that you're from OzBargain, and we'll amend the quote to use the special rate of 7.66%. Or you can use the dedicated landing page https://millarx.com.au/ozbargain

Home charger bundled from $35/month

Getting the car is one thing, getting home charging sorted is another. You can bundle a charger, professional installation and ongoing support into your lease payment:

  • Up to 4x faster than the trickle cable that comes in the boot
  • Cheaper per kWh than relying on public charging
  • No upfront cost for a standard installation
  • The charger is yours to keep at the end of the term

Two options depending on your switchboard and installation: Autel AC (7kW single phase / 22kW three phase) or Tesla Wall Connector (7kW / 22kW).

$35/month covers a standard installation. If your place needs more than that (switchboard upgrade, long cable run, etc.) we'll let you know and provide a quote.

Why EVs specifically

EVs under the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles are FBT exempt, which means the whole lease payment comes out of your pre-tax salary. That's where the bulk of the saving comes from — the 1% rate cut is an additional discount on the finance provided by MillarX.

Using the BYD Sealion 7 (Premium) at $54,990 driveaway as an example:

Cash vs Novated Lease (5 years)
Outright (Cash) 5 Year Total Novated Lease 5 Year Total
Driveaway price $54,990 Net cost (the amount your take-home pay drops) $807/month
Running costs (insurance, rego, tyres, etc.) $346/month Total (after tax) $47,613
Running costs (5 years) $20,760 Balloon payment $14,130
Total cost (5 yrs) $75,750 Total cost (5 yrs) $61,743
Total savings $14,007
Mortgage interest saved (6%) $16,947
Net benefit $30,954

Total saving via the novated lease is $14,007, and you get to keep the cash in the bank for 5 years and save almost $17k off mortgage interest. So a novated lease is almost $30k of benefit on a $54k car compared to cash or car loan finance. (If you don't have a mortgage, you can still realise the savings by putting it in a high interest savings account.)

It's a great deal, but it might not be for everyone

Pre-empting some comments — novated leasing isn't always the best solution for everyone, and it is not a magic way to get a free car. Some people may prefer to buy a used car a few years older to save money instead, which is perfectly valid. (BTW, you can novated lease a used car and still realise the benefits.) But if you have decided on buying a new (or used) car, it is a very cost-effective way to finance it and has clear benefits over paying cash or using a car loan.

MillarX vs "other" novated lease providers

Novated leasing can get a bad reputation due to high interest rates and dodgy "junk" insurances tacked on by other providers. Many providers hide behind the "tax" savings, charge you 12-15% interest and add unnecessary insurances and services. We put a quote comparison tool on our website so you can easily compare quotes - https://millarx.com.au/compare-your-quote

We started MillarX to provide clear, transparent pricing. We disclose our interest rates and all fees and charges on our quotes. We let you pick your own insurance to maximise the savings, and we don't charge brokerage to source cars for you (you can find your own car if you want, and we'll do the rest).

Below is an example for the same car, comparing a MillarX novated lease against another large novated lease provider. We've removed the items that are always the same between providers (running costs, balloon payment).

Other Providers 5 Year Total MillarX 5 Year Total
Vehicle finance (14%) $60,572 Vehicle finance (7.66%) $50,799
Junk insurance $5,700 Junk insurance $0
Total cost $66,272 Total cost $50,799
Total saving $15,473

"Junk insurance" = unnecessary additional insurances that provide little value in most cases.

Do your research

You can use the calculator on our website to check other vehicles or personalise it to your circumstances (salary, location, etc.). There are multiple independent novated leasing calculators available as well — posted in the forums on this website, and also in the Australian subreddit:

Compare your quote

Leasing providers often present quotes in different formats, so it's difficult to get an apples-for-apples comparison on interest rates, fees and charges. We have a quote comparison tool on our website https://millarx.com.au/compare-your-quote so you can identify the headline interest rate and compare properly.

If you're buying a new EV on a novated lease, the real question is: are you getting a clean deal, or getting loaded with hidden costs?

BYO / self-managed

Many employers allow BYO (also called self-managed) novated leases, meaning you're not locked into whoever your employer's salary packaging provider has bundled in. You choose the financier, and your employer just processes the deductions.

MillarX can provide the finance on a BYO lease, and as per the example above, 14% vs 7.66% is a massive $15k saving on finance alone. The tax savings are the same either way — they come from the novated lease structure, not the provider.

If your employer already has a packaging provider but you'd rather bring your own finance, we handle the lease and work directly with your employer's payroll to set it up. Worth a quick email to your HR or payroll team to confirm they'll accept a BYO arrangement — most will.

** EDIT - Just to clarify - the 1% discount is a 5 year lease only **

  • So glad I got 2.99% during covid

    • so I glad I bought 20 used cars at about $3.50 for cash pre-covid. /s

    • novated leases never went down to 2.99%

  • My employer uses an exclusive novated lease provider which sucks. They also don’t allow BYO finance. The lease company told me that my interest rate is high and non-negotiable because the rate is linked to my employer. The same lease provider offers lower rates to employees of other organisations probably because there is competition.

    • This might be a long shot, but my employer said I only have access to one NL supplier. However I found that there was another provider, Novated Lease Australia that said that for my line of work, if my employer says they only offer one provider, they can work with my workplace to make it work. The initial quote my work-provided NL provider gave me was 20%, but NLA was able to do a much better price, and I was able to negotiate between them and get a better interest rate at the end. Again, it's very situational, but if you do happen to be in the same situation as me, it might be worth just seeing if they can do anything to make it work?

      • This would be BYO finance, which haliloo said was not available. That's unfortunate! If your employer ever wanted to consider another provider or BYO we'd be happy to have a chat.

    • This is the default BS comeback. My company is the same, just get a competitor quote, I used Driva, and share with the lease provider that their quote is unreasonable.

If they chase the quote, just tell them you are working with your finance department to look at alternatives providers and options such as Origin EV Subscriptions. They will reduce the %.

  • Strongly suggest everyone uses an independent calculator when evaluating novated leases. There is a great community on Reddit with a link to the excel file.
Calculates a number of different scenarios and allows you to compare cash, existing vehicles and different finance products.

    • Came here to say the same thing! The reddit community (OP has mentioned them already) has actually upgraded the excel sheet to an actual webpage calculator here https://novatedlease.guide/calculator/

I just got my NL approved and signed off today which is exciting - my starting interest rate quote was about 20% but I managed to get it down to 8% (as per calculator) before signing, which has been a huge saving. Definitely recommend looking into the calculator and the reddit community and getting your head around how it all works, as it can save you tens of thousands in some cases

Good luck with NL everyone - hopefully it's something that works for you and you can get some good savings!

      • The fact that they even tried putting the rate through at 20% is robbery!

        • Yeah, it was absolutely insane. I was looking in the NL subreddit and hadn't seen anyone's quote be that high. I honestly thought my consultant accidentally had it listed as an ICE car instead of an EV and was charging me post tax money because of how high it was. I had a colleague in my department with the same NL provider who got a lease for the exact same car variant/colour, but where I was looking for a 5 year lease, they got a 4 year lease; normally this would mean their lease should be more since the lease term is shorter, but their repayments were cheaper than my original quote. After emailing my consultant back and saying I had a better quote elsewhere (by managing to find another provider that would work with my workplace for BYO lease, and their quote was about 10%), they said that I could go through finance, and if approved we could probably get a better deal by talking to the dealerships. I said yes, and even though they knew the competitor's quote and knew what my colleague was paying, the second quote they gave us was still worse for weekly repayments than my colleague's quote.

Finally I told them I was going with the competition, and in a lucky turn of events when I spoke to dealership they said they actually have a friendship with the more expensive provider who I told no. They said they can usually work out better deals, and if I wanted them to organise a better price they'd be happy to. Finally on the third quote from the provider, they finally came back with something competitive at the final 8% rate, but I never would have figured any of it out without the novatedlease calculator and the subreddit

          • @Opaquer: Took your for a ride! From 20% to 8% is a crazy drop but also, it shouldn't even be that high to begin with. Glad you got it sorted.

  • OP, why did Ben deactivated his Reddit account and stop posting novoted lease information

    • We found a lot of leasing companies where anonymously tiring to influence the forums. We have been concentrating on lobbying for change, and lowering the cost of novated leasing for hundreds of people.  MillarX has not changed, and in fact has strengthened its resolve to offer the most transparent and employee focused solution in the market

      • Target NSW Health. Their panel providers operate like daylight robbery.

        • Can concur. I'm being charged 10.6%
They thieve from our industry but the EV threshold still made this cheaper than outright

          • @maverickjohn: Double check the number. A recent quote from Jan 2026 before rate rise was sitting between 12-14% before NSW Health robs you a further 50% of the savings.

            • @SetTheFaqUp: As a health manager I did avoid those problems. But completely agree my wife is a registered nurse and would have been $200 worse a fortnight than I would have

  • This is confusing for me. How does this scheme exist if it only serves to lose money for the govt, as they earn less income tax from the employee on the lease?

    • Novated leasing has been around a long time, but less beneficial until recently. A few years ago the government provided the FBT exemption incentive to help drive EV adoption. This is going to be wound back in the next few years. Novated leasing will remain, but the FBT exemption will be reduced.

      • I understand it's been around a long time but how does the govt. make money from novated leasing?

        • They don't, they lose money.

        • It doesn't - but for EV's in particular, it's to increase uptake in EV's, which it's doing a great job of. It's also why they've made a change from next year onwards around how much FBT discount you get.

    • It exists to sell more Australian made cars, to keep the Australian car industry alive.

Yes the Australian car industry stopped existing 10 years ago, and yes it's very strange that the scheme continues supporting foreign car manufacturers today, instead of being wound up when the car industry was wound up 🤷

    • Salary sacrifice exists as an employer perk, i.e. part of the pretax money can be used to fund a vehicle lease.

Previously this is significantly hindered by the existence of FBT, and as you have to pay quite a bit of the lease with post-tax money anyway, the saving is not significant unless you are on top tax bracket +/- drive a lot +/- only do it for short term e.g. 1 year.

The FBT-exemption is then brought in late 2022 as a way to promote the uptake of low-emission car, as part of the effort to reduce CO2 emission. This made NL significantly cheaper even for people on typical tax brackets.

You are absolutely right that it costs government huge amount in lost tax revenue. This in fact became a huge issue in the last election, where labour has to defend the continued existence and that it was worth "paying for lower CO2 using lower tax revenue".

Whether or not this is true is not my expertise.

  • So if you only save $14,007 and you got this great interest rate

How much do people save on NL with all the shonky providers charging 8,9,10 …. 20% and all their dodgy add on fees and charges?

Seems to me NL is a rort from start to finish. Why should some employees get “cheap” cars and tax breaks and others don’t?

    • Caveat emptor - many signs up to NL without understanding the numbers.

Usually the financier and NL provider are main benefactor for this tax payer funded initiative.

      • I have yet to see any tax payer funded initiative in which common man (and woman) are the beneficiaries.

        • *beneficiary

        • I mean both can be true. Both the common man and woman and the company are winning out of this.

Same with say the Home battery scheme. I installed a battery system for much cheaper than I would have otherwise paid. (I probably wouldn't have went ahead with it at retail prices)

  • The problem is your employer choose the leasing company not you.

Typical market rate atm is ~12%

They also don't tell you APR in any doc they produce but you can always throw it to ChatGPT or whatever and ask.

It's not extremely bad tho, for $75k EV (=FBT exempted) over 5 years lease, difference between 8% and 12% APR is about $5.6k-$7.2k

    • That's exactly why we built the quote compare tool at https://millarx.com.au/compare-your-quote so you can compare our transparent rate with other quotes.

If your employer chooses the lease company, often we can still provide the finance via BYO / self managed

  • The Mortgage interest saved (6%) $16,947 is misleading

That figure is based on $54,990 x 6% x 5 years in an offset account

If you NL you don’t have $54,000 in the bank for 5 years because you are paying off $807 a month that is $9,684 per year

So you can’t theoretically have $54,990 in the bank for 5 years in an offset account. It drops by $10k a year

    • The figures may not be exact, as they are meant to demonstrate the opportunity cost of having the money used elsewhere (mortgage offset or high interest savings). In this example - it's comparing to upfront cash purchase. So that $54,000 is in the bank.

You are not paying the lease off from the $54,000 - those payments come out of your ongoing salary.

  • Can you please clarify BYO part? I work for a NSW gov department that works only with Maxxia and Smart, does it mean I just can use you and don't need to deal with those 2 scums?

    • We provide the finance - so you can use our competitive interest rate above. Then, after settlement the other provider manages the lease ongoing (so they manage the deductions from your payroll, and pay the finance/expenses). We are just involved for the initial finance process. If you'd like to get a quote use the calculator and pop in your employer, and then we can provide the BYO quote.

  • How is the home charger included in an FBT-exempt lease when the ATO says it is not a car expense?
    https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/hiring-a…

    • It isn't - for that exactly reason. It's managed as a post tax expense. The benefit here is the installation price is spread over the life of the lease ($35 per month instead of $XXXX upfront) - and you get full warranty for the life of the lease (4/5 years depending on the model)

  • @MillarX Dave,
Can i get a NL with you guys if my employer has only one other provider exclusively?

    • Yes - that's referred to as BYO finance. If you want to reach out via the application form, or via ben@millarx.com.au we'd be happy to help. (Often we find employers are also open to adding us to their provider panel - so employees have a choice of multiple)

  • Home charger bundled from $35/month
Getting the car is one thing, getting home charging sorted is another. You can bundle a charger, professional installation and ongoing support into your lease payment:

Up to 4x faster than the trickle cable that comes in the boot
Cheaper per kWh than relying on public charging
No upfront cost for a standard installation
The charger is yours to keep at the end of the term

    Really? Charger will attract FBT.

    • EV FBT exempted as long as it doesn't go over the exempt threshold.

However I bet will be added to the end of lease payment value.

I know they even add a dashcam to that.

      • They should offer a package on a BYD ATTO 2 with a corolla hybrid as an accessory

    • The FBT is set up as a post tax deduction so as not to incur FBT.

The benefit here is the cost is spread over the life of the lease rather than upfront, and is installed professionally and comes with warranty over the life of the lease (4/5 years)

      • "spread over the life of the lease rather than upfront"

It is not a benefit as interest is paid on cost of the asset and payment with post tax money. At least 100bps over the interest rate of a typical mortgage.

I don't believe any EVSE in Australia are not professionally installed by a licensed electrician.

        • No they don’t fund the Charger. It’s essentially an interest free arrangement

  • Any benefit to a NL if one is self employed? Not investigated yet so thought I would throw it to the brains trust that is OzB.

    • If you can draw wages/salary on a regular frequency (e.g. fortnightly, monthly) then yes - it has the same benefits. If you take dividends via a different structure (e.g. company dividends or trust) then the benefit doesn't apply

  • I have Sigen battery system at home. Will you be able to include 22kw Sigen AC charger with the lease?

    • No unfortunately. We can only offer the Autel or Tesla

  • I assume we can bundle other stuff with the insurance as well right ( maintenance, fuel, road assist) with you? I like the proposition but a friend recently told me that a byo was slower and harder than signing up with the employer provider , which sounds sketchy as hell

    • We will assist in getting set up with the BYO lease (help you with the process and forms you need to provide the other provider). We have found the slight bit of extra effort is worth it when the finance cost can be up to $15k difference.

In terms of running costs - yes. All running costs you listed, along with tyres and other optional ones (e.g. cleaning) can be bundled.

  • I wish we had the option to use other providers or BYO finance, I tried with HR/Payroll and they couldnt be stuffed listening.

    • Yes - it can be frustrating. If you wanted us to chat to your HR/Payroll we are always happy to. We have often found we can help by suggesting they appoint us on a panel arrangement - so they keep their existing provider, and give the employees a choice. This minimises any effort from HR/Payroll

  • @MillarX Dave - I put in my details on your website to get a quote comparison and then subsequently left my contact details but never received a call or anything back. How can I get in touch?

    • We had a few enquiries yesterday so we are still working through them! In the interim - can you email ben@millarx.com.au and we'll jump right on it.

  • I've received a quote but when plugging it into the website tool the effective interest rate is above 8.44. It is a 5 yr loan term and I am adjusting the fortnightly payments as needed for millarX quotes, how is the 7.66 calculated?

    • Hi - did you get a quote from us via email after requesting the special rate? Send me a PM with the quote number and I'll look into it further for you.

  • Guys, if getting a car through NV is so good, what about the depreciation that comes with it?
Will I be better off buying a 3 year old EV outright cash? That has already been depreciated?

    • The final balloon payment is calculated based on the expected depreciation

      https://novatedlease.guide/calculator

Have a look here and you can work out the total cost of ownership across both buying outright vs novated lease at the end of your lease period.

    • what about the depreciation that comes with it?

I'm not sure what you mean - cars depreciate anyway whether you lease or not. You can't escape it.

Will I be better off buying a 3 year old EV

Of course, it's always cheaper to buy a car that someone else has already paid some depreciation on.

You can novated lease a used car too - if you want to buy used, then you get the best of both worlds this way.

      • This is the way forward me thinks. If 2nd hand prices are low enough.

        How does it work?

The nv pays Uncle Joe the cash, and he walks away a happy seller, transfers the car to NV company's name and that's that?

        • You need to ask your novated lease company. Mine has conditions like the used car cannot be more than X years old, and they will only purchase from a dealer not a private seller.

          • @Nom: Ohhhhh, yes, that does make sense. Thanks for the heads up.

        • Yes - common enough to lease a used EV, and prices are dropping. Couple things to be aware of - if it's a private seller you won't be able to claim the GST (as there isn't any), so when shopping private vs dealer keep that in mind.

Secondly, as Nom noted, you can only go a few years old. I think with the upcoming FBT changes you want to ensure it was first purchased/registered after 1 July 2022
