I Built a Free Windows App to Track Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and Antigravity Usage

Hi OzBargain,

I use Codex and Claude Code regularly and got sick of checking multiple dashboards to see how much usage I had left and when my limits reset.

So I built AI Usage Monitor, a free, open-source Windows app that puts everything in one place.

It currently supports:

  • Codex, Claude Code, Cursor and Google Antigravity usage and reset times.
  • A desktop widget, system tray icon or compact strip next to your taskbar.
  • Multiple monitors.
  • Rough daily API cost estimates for Azure OpenAI and AWS Bedrock, with configurable pricing.
  • Existing credentials from your installed apps or CLIs, so there are no extra API keys to enter.

A heads-up on the API costs: the estimates aren’t perfect or particularly accurate yet. Actual Azure and AWS charges can differ, so treat them as a rough guide rather than a reliable billing figure. I’m still working on improving this.

I also spent a fair bit of time getting the Windows integration right. The taskbar display runs independently of Explorer, so if the app hangs or crashes, it won’t take your taskbar down with it. Event hooks, refresh throttling and scheduled updates are handled carefully to avoid unnecessary background activity.

Windows 10/11 only. The executable isn’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen might show an unknown-publisher warning. Checksums and source code are available on GitHub.

  • AI to check your usage of AI…..
    AI inception

  • If you expand this app to Windows 3.11 I'll be very interested

  • You could've saved AI tokens by not building this AI app.

    • You can save some money by not eating

      • Post it as a deal.

  • You are a tricky one, you changed the votes from not useful to useful.
Yesterday it was 20 something not useful, now it's the opposite as useful….haha.

      • I do, because this is blatant manipulation of the voting… It now makes it look like people voted it "useful" when they didnt. It also makes other to think that a lot of people voted it "useful", when they didnt. This is pure misinformation and manipulation and is 100% misleading.

The issue here is that people DO care, because some people will rely on these votes to make a decision. You deliberately changed the votes to give your app an approval bump by manipulation of the voting options. This is horribly deceitful and done with intent. That and the "sheep effect", where people will see lots of positive votes and continue to upvote the positive poll options because "well, if others think it's useful, I'll select the same poll option."

      • Who cares really

        Democracy

      • no one gonna trust your privacy policies now homie!

  • R.I.P. @pegaxs

    • "The year 2012 marked the "Big Bang" of modern artificial intelligence due to the breakthrough of AlexNet, a deep convolutional neural network that revolutionized computer vision and sparked today's AI boom."

2012 is also the year pegas was first seen on the internet. Coincidence?

      • It’s not just a coincidence that the birth of AI coincides with my account creation on OzBargain.

I was created under the original ChatIAN LLM that just deals with interaction with questions about automotive based enquiries…

        *pops a capacitor*

  • Claudeception.

  • I reckon the barrier to creating apps has gotten so low that there isnt really a market for stand alone niche apps anymore.

I think we'll either all move to building our own personal custom use apps (if we actually need some kind of custom service), or someone will create a platform that can be molded by users to take on whatever functions we used to use stand alone apps for

    • I actually put quite a bit of effort to trade off some situations and hook the windows events so that the taskbar runs smoothly without interfering the Windows Explorer process. You can actually do the same as well and you might learn something

      • I have made my own apps, I work in programming. Im not saying you didnt work hard on this app, but in general its never been easier for someone to create one.

Because of this people are being overwhelmed with so many niche app designs from independent devs (most of which wont receive any long term maintenance or support), and its turning any potential users off trying anything new.

You cant market something to a hostile user base.

        • I’m also a software eng, this app came from a group of devs, my friends, that have the same problem and they didn’t know there is hook mechanism from Antigravity. And then I found it useful as well while going through my work.

I’m just sharing what we use it daily and think might be some other devs wants it. One of my best friend references my mechanism and created this own.

So I’m not for gathering user base, going to top apps etc, just helping

    • I think we'll either all move to building our own personal custom use apps (if we actually need some kind of custom service)

I used to do that with Visual Basic lol. Or at worst something I track in an Excel spreadsheet.

It wouldn't be a bad thing if it became more normal for people to ask AI to write a basic script or program (most custom things people want aren't that complex overall) that they could run in a native Powershell or other default included language interpreter or even VBA macro, most people still have Office for example. Certainly wouldn't be worse than people who "I created an app" to do something dead simple but is loaded with excessive ads or required permissions.

    • yeah, I build for myself mostly. e.g. I like watching YT vids of tours of Chinese Markets, but annoys me when I don't know what I'm looking at, as all in Chinese.. duh! So I made a transparent window I can drag across the text in a vid and it translates nearly instantly.

Another one was a FB post/Suggested etc blocker for PC/Mac/Linux. I've always used Fluff Buster Purity, but it hasn't been updated since Jan and no longer blocks. The developer isn't responding to anyone trying to contact him, so had Claude/Codex build one from scratch, works a charm now.

    • Yeah we are heading this way.

It's still good to see people spend time and effort to share their creations as open source projects even though interest is zero to nill.

Pretty soon people will stop bothering sharing those small/nich projects because of no interest and because literally anyone can prompt their custom software needs into existence on demand.

  • You built?

    • "Built" is doing a lot of heavy lifting

      • If aren't coding in machine code you aren't a coder.

        • I get what you're saying, but if you use that mindset with other things you'll see it doesn't always work.

Speilburg doesn't act, touch a camera or edit. So he's not a film maker? Think of most bosses role's. Does a president run a country? Or do they just tell people to do it?

Or going specifically with this example: If I were to come up with an idea for an app, spend time with a coder (human) discussing what I want, back and forth, pay them to make it, test it, give feedback, test it…etc. Can I not say I made an app?

          • @amrdeus: This app is genuinely useful to devs, and I think some of you are focusing on the wrong thing — arguing over whether I “built” it or AI “built” it instead of whether the app itself is useful.

Looking at the stats, a lot of the negative reactions came before people even downloaded or tried it, which makes me wonder what some of you are actually getting out of tearing down someone who made something and shared it for free.

And AI generating code doesn’t remove the need for engineering judgement. Without a software engineering background, even deciding whether something like the taskbar widget should be hosted inside Windows Explorer or run independently can be a challenge — you first need to understand what those approaches actually mean, what the trade-offs are, and what failure modes each one introduces. AI can give you options, but someone still has to understand them and make the call.

If you think this is so trivial and AI did all the work, then go ahead: use whatever AI tools you want and build a better version from scratch, without referencing mine. I’d genuinely be interested to see the result.

And yes, this comment was written by AI under my instructions — so by the same logic, I guess AI commented this, not me.

    • Yes

  • Nicely done mate thanks!

  • OMG FOR FREE????

  • After burning thru $300 in a short time using the API, I had Codex knock up usage monitor in <2 mins that runs in a Win PS or Ubuntu terminal and updates in real time token usage/cost, % of hr/week left etc. Lightweight and unintrusive.

    • This is exactly how I did. Most of them are interval and it’s not real time even though they say real time.

  • I Built a Free Windows App

surely if you are using AI to make an app you could have used a cross-platform framework

    • Well, technically there are trades off. This app is deeply integrated to Windows OS and used a bunch of OS event in order to keep the taskbar runs perfectly and efficiently. Not UI Thread locking and you won’t feel lagging

I mean I could be cross platform but there are other in GitHub that does it already. However, none of these works perfectly in windows. They are all bonded to the windows explorer process which somehow crashes the explorer and need to restart regularly.

  • Why didn't you just install an existing one that's better tested like CodexBar or Win-CodexBar?

    • they do not provide real time, they are schedule poll every x minutes. Mine is hooked. So eventually if the PC / Laptop idle, by default it doesn't really call so much api as they do. doesn't drain the laptop battery.

And also not sure if they can config to show multiple providers in a compact view setting at the right bottom corner for windows widget or taskbar widget.

In my use case, i always monitor Codex and Claude usage and don't want to click to switch and see.

  • I voted for the most useful answer.

  • well done, thanks for sharing
would be great if you could add other ones like K3 and Z.AI.

    • i do not have accounts with them apparently new users needs to queue

  • Yes!

    • Did you forget to switch sock accounts?

      • i was about to reply @QuickToThePointless but probably did not click

  • Aargnhhh!

  • What's missing in a LiteLLM deployment? It already has a nice dashboard and real time token usage count.

    • I think it solves a slightly different problem. It mainly tracks and manages API traffic that goes through its proxy — tokens, cost, budgets, routing, etc.

What I wanted to track was the actual subscription usage (The personal/organisation subscription) from tools like Codex and Claude Code, e.g. the 5-hour/weekly limits, remaining quota, and reset times. Those don't normally pass through LiteLLM, so it can't see them.

That said, LiteLLM would actually be a nice data source to support in the future for API usage/cost.

  • have u tried deepseek and how do u feel about the price increase now, literally open ai could be cheaper with sol

    • I haven’t as I think the ability with deepseek might not be as good those two. Which is quite a big gap in deep swe. And if I use it for dev I might end up with bad implementation or hidden issues and then I might end up with more routes and time spent.

But asking or answering daily questions I think it quite fits.

      • ive built with it its pretty decent, when it was the best bang for buck cheap pricing, now its like 4x more expensive. Sol turns out to be way better priced

  • slop

  • nice. why use 4 different platforms?

    • is an option, it is capable to track but you can just show the ones you are using. Very flex, can just use the taskbar widget or windows widget or both.

One of my friends loves the windows one. I like the taskbar widgets shows on some of the monitors. Another guy loves the taskbar widgets but showing on the left…

  • At this point most devs would rather build their own mini-apps like this and fine tune it to their own needs rather than install a vibe coded one from an unknown stranger(no offence), unless it's coming from a well established dev/community of maintainers.

    • yeah thats totally fine, i agree, is your freedom, just sharing thats all

  • Any T3 Code users here? It's always interesting seeing how much you would be spending if you were paying the unsubsidized API costs.

  • My work has us using ChatGPT - I’ve found that Codexbar on MacOS works great for tracking usage.
