Hi all,
Plenty of Chinese-Australian families still check the almanac before locking in a wedding date. Someone will look at a chart before a baby gets named. Picking a day to move house, open a shop, sign a contract — there'll usually be an opinion in the family about which day is the better one.
The part I find interesting is that people who don't believe any of it join in anyway. It's less a matter of faith than a shared vocabulary that's been in circulation for over a thousand years and never quite went away.
What tends to get lost is that underneath the vocabulary sits an actual system. BaZi — the Four Pillars — takes a birth date, time and place and derives a fixed structure from it. The derivation has strict rules. It isn't a mood.
For most of its history, though, reading that structure meant finding someone who could do it for you, and taking their word for it. That's the part I wanted to change.
So I built FateMaster: https://www.fatemaster.ai
The chart is calculated, not written
A deterministic engine derives the pillars — the same way the tradition does, and the same way every time. Your birth time is corrected to true solar time using your birth coordinates, which matters more than it sounds: if you were born anywhere away from your time zone's meridian and near an hour boundary, the uncorrected time puts you on the wrong pillar and everything downstream is wrong with it. Most free calculators skip this.
The language model never touches that part. It only explains a result it wasn't allowed to invent. Enter the same details twice and you get the same chart; what changes between readings is the reading, not the astronomy.
You get the reasoning, not a verdict
This is the bit I actually care about. A consultation gives you a conclusion and you either accept it or you don't — the working stays with the person you paid. Here the structure is on screen and the explanation walks through it: which element dominates, where the clashes are, what the luck cycles do over time. The goal is that you end up able to read it yourself, not that you keep coming back.
If you want to go further, describe an actual situation and an agent works out what the question calls for — a birth chart when you're asking about the shape of a life, an I Ching hexagram when you're asking about one thing in front of you — then runs that calculation and reasons from the result. If it's missing something it needs, it asks instead of guessing.
Where I'll be straight about it
The calculation is deterministic and I'll defend it line by line. The interpretation is not science and I'm not going to dress it up as prophecy.
A thousand-year-old system deserves to be handled rationally: no superstition, nothing deified. What you make of the reading is yours to decide — and if you think the whole field is nonsense, that's a perfectly reasonable position that this won't change.
Practical bits
- Runs in the browser, no app
- English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, 日本語, 한국어
- There's a paid tier for the deeper luck-timing analysis and the agent. Casting a chart and reading what it means is the part most people will ever use
Niche one for OzBargain, I know — but it's a big community here and this comes up around Lunar New Year, weddings and new babies. Happy to answer anything about how the calculations work. That part I can defend line by line.
Cheers.

Oh, for real? Do people just look up “good website to advertise my AI vibe coded shit?” And Google just spits out “OzBargain”?
