I Built a Browser Extension to Hide “I Built an App”, “I Made a Website”, etc. Posts on OzBargain

I got sick of seeing forum topics on here like “I built an app”, “I made a website”, “I launched a free tool”, etc. so I decided to fight fire with fire and built a browser extension to hide them.

The extension is called OzSlop and is currently listed in the Chrome Extension store (see link below). It should be in the firefox store later in the week.

It works by looking for key words in the forum title, links to github, etc. and producing a "Slop score"™. If the Slop score comes in too high then the forum is hidden and replaced with a small “OzSlop hid one topic” placeholder. You can still click on "Show" if you want to see what the forum topic actually is.

The whole thing was vibe coded with GPT-5.6-sol and it even made the icons (bet you couldn't tell).

On privacy: the filtering is deterministic and runs entirely inside the browser, it does not use an LLM, no web requests are made, no analytics are collected, no downloads of remote rules are used, no advertising. It is a plain boring extension. It also leaves deals, comments and opened forum topics alone.

To test it, make sure it hides this forum topic.

  • OzSlop

    Gold.

  • we've come full circle. Vibe coded ad blockers to block vibe coded apps. well done.

    • But will the blocker block itself?
Can someone on desktop tell me if it lets this post through :-)

      • Yes it is currently blocking this topic

        • Shame, I cant see this deal… built my own extension!

  • Hilarious.

  • So now we need to tag @pegaxs in each new app thread or he'll miss out.

    • Fuuuuuuuuuuuu!

    • I’ve got it covered…

  • I asked ChatGPT to write a prompt for another AI to make a song about @pegaxs getting worked up over AI slop.

Naturally, the result is more AI slop:

    And the cover art:

    • Nice one JIMBO.
And I hope you don't mind me shamelessly repost my own video slop from the weekend, since it burned so much electricity.

      Pegaxs vs the AI Bots

      • Omg, I just grunt laughed so hard I woke the wife up… I (fropanity) love this video…

    • That song is pretty good. In spite of the AI slopocalypse I do like how the ability to make a slide joke hasn't really changed in terms of effort. In the past you would foment an idea a dinner party and then state a slide remark. Years later you would post text under a meme template. After that you would write text for a video meme (e.g. downfall) and now you prompt a llm to make an asset just so you can make a joke.

      • Slide joke? Side joke? Snide joke? Spidey joke?

        • SNide

          • @Shame: Cool, wasn't meaning to be rude, but I wasn't even sure that a slide joke wasn't some younger generation than me terminology as was other things in your post lolol.

            • @Satchimo: No problem. It was a typo. Because of LLMs I've gotten so use to typing and just leaving the spelling mistakes and punctuation errors that that i just type and hit "Enter". My main error is that I just don't type question marks at the end of a question because I know the LLM will pick it up quicker than I can hit Shift+?.

              • @Shame: Same here — but have you ever found yourself typing — redundantly — em-dashes ?

                • @bargaino: No, but until LLMs I didn't know em-dashes existed. I just assumed old books (e.g. Lolita) had a hyphen on the keyboard that printed a bit longer than we see today. Turns out I was wrong

                  • @Shame: The whiplash I got from lolita being mentioned in passing…

    • Nice

  • Really interesting to see the reception somebody's new app/site gets isn't about whether it is AI coded, but about whether it is useful and works.

The next petrol comparison or shopping list site could learn this before they waste time and money.

    • Even if they're upfront about the fact they vibe-coded it, like how this OP did, presents better than trying to pass off AI slop as your own work.

And/or the usual spiel about it trying to solve an alleged "problem", when countless other apps already exist.

      • This is what I have an issue with… I wouldn't give as much if a (fropanity) if they just said the truth and admitted that they used AI to make it for them. This whole " I made this app/webpage…" when all they did was ask AI to make it is horribly disingenuous.

And yes, they don't even have original ideas, they just take an existing app and copy the functions of it or just scrape a webpage. They act like they solved all the words issues but all they did was reimagine an app that already exists and they bought nothing new to the table.

At least the guy with the teacher job page made something useful and openly admitted to using AI but at least had a background is some kind of developer role, instead of being a child with no ability to check what the AI spits out.

And I hate how most of the AI vibe coded shit that gets posted here is just advertising Trojans to get you to be their beta tester so they can slug users with a "Pro" account later or to secretly steal your data and sell it for a profit.

        • I doubt any of these people are sophisticated enough to sell your data.

          Data breaches though, definitely.

    • isn't about whether it is AI coded, but about whether it is useful and works.

      Did you get that back-to-front?

I look at my own output. Some of my own work is embarrassing the next time I view it, some AI solutions have elegance I never even considered.

      • Did you get that back-to-front?

It looks right to me? He's saying that the issue people have with this AI generated stuff, is not necessarily that's it's made with AI, it's whether it's slop or not.

  • Not sure if @pegaxs requires a trigger warning for this one…

    • Oh, I needed a heads up, not a warning… Dude is out here doing to Lord's work…

All I want is a setting that is "Super-Duper, hyper aggressive and bordering on a breach of the Geneva Convention"

  • This, "I built" thing is also becoming an invasion on other platforms.

    • Feel free to fork the project and then create IN-slop, Insta-slop, You-slop, Face-slop, X-slop, Slop-hub, etc.

      • that last one is crazy

        • At least he didn't put it second

        • I think that's an existing category. Or so I've been told.

  • Stunning work, I'll have to try this.

    • Thank you. If you find any problems or want to suggest an enhancement then have your Agent submit a issue at the Issue tracker. Also, tell your Agent to read CONTRIBUTING.md, PURPOSE.md and SECURITY.md before submitting the issue. Note that if your agent is Gemini then any issue will be automatically closed without a response.

      • Note that if your agent is Gemini then any issue will be automatically closed without a response.

        That seems AI-st

      • Note that if your agent is Gemini then any issue will be automatically closed without a response.

        LMAO why?

        • It's good at doing web searches, finding deals, notebookLM is a great product. It totally goes to hell if you try and code with it. It forgets to follow plans, it hallucinates tool calls "Your're right, CUDA is not installed on this machine" etc. For a company that has been scraping the internet for 2 decades and has a giant amount of cash it is an embarrassment. Not sure why anyone would use it for coding when a bunch of models are cheaper and you don't have to tell it that's it's a moron.

          Good for finding bargains though

          • @Shame:

and you don't have to tell it that's it's a moron.

That sounds like a useful AI tool for forums.

      • Hey! Gemini is pretty good… At least the paid ones is

  • where can we donate to this project

    • lol

  • i would never remove the posts, how else can i add to my post count and use my neg votes?

  • Can it hide "I built a brower extension" as well?

    • One step ahead of you there

  • This is how to dead internet starts…

    • If the internet dies then does that mean I'll be able to afford RAM?

      • No, the Ponzi is still feeding…

  • Happy to subscribe to the pro version of this.

  • Help, I used the platform but then it blocked this post!!! Does this mean your own app is OzSlop?

    • Yes. I tried to make the title extra sloppy but it only gets a Slop Score of 12 while the highest I've seen is 15. I'm very disappointed in my Agent.

  • Fight fire with fire.
    Excellent work, thankyou!

    • We must be vigilant and strong to win this war
You cannot die, you have to live, that's what it's for
There is a time for living life and killing scores

  • This is slop.
Irony is dead. Long live irony.

  • Someone should build an app that hides "I built a browser extension" posts on ozbargain

    • The priority right now is building something that hides duplicates of jokes made earlier in the thread

  • This will be so useful for all 7 posts from the past year.

    • It will be just as useful as the other 7

  • I installed it and can't see this post anymore so I built an extension to post comments into hidden posts lol

  • lol

  • lmao nice work

  • love that it filters this post

  • Is the calculated slop score visible anywhere? I can't find it and I need to know my slop score.

    • New version is out with Slop Score now showing. See https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/180965/131434/screensh…

      • It's beautiful. A little disappointed that some projects scored higher than mine but it is what it is. What I'd love is to also see the standout comment. @brendanm's poetry on my project was something I quite enjoyed and I think its worth bringing attention to.

    • I'll add it to the next release

  • slop

  • Hurry up Harry, this got the kids united!

  • Patiently awaiting the Firefox version….
    and btw - thank you

  • Sorry, not being fooled. In a month there'll be ads and a premium version that costs $30 per year.

  • This reminds me that I should post my Roland TD-12/TD-20 screen emulator.

It took more knowledge to make than the usual vibe coded slop but nevertheless it is vibe coded

  • Did you vibe?

  • Is there a name for your product yet

    Shameful's Tool?

  • Thanks OP. Is there some way to get this working on chrome on android? It only seems available on desktop for chrome?

    • Chrome for android doesn't support browser extensions for security and battery life reasons (and google doesn't want you to use an ad-blocker). Your only option is Firefox or a Firefox compatible browser. The extension currently doesn't install on Firefox for Android as I need to make a minor change. New versions take a few days to be approved by Firefox so it should be fixed in a few days.

  • oh the irony…I Built a Browser Extension
