What else do you want from a holiday destination?

      • I just got back from there. Although I superficiality agree with most statements above, I definitely wouldn't go again. SE Asia is closer and better in every way. SL is third world, and whilst better than India, still dirty

        • SE Asia is closer and probably a bit cheaper as well, but not so sure about the 'better' part. Looks like you've had some rough experiences in SL. It would be worthwhile to share to the group. It's rare to come across someone who's been to Sri Lanka saying 'i won't go back'. I've seen many videos of tourists crying with their local guides at the airport before leaving the country. It's such a welcoming country that is very different from that aspect compared to SE Asia (of course you get bad apples everywhere, but having visited over 30 countries across the world, I think Sri Lanka easily has the kindest and warmest people, only rural Greece can come close to SL hospitality.)

      • Strong agree, I was there a couple of weeks ago and loved it all.

      • It's hot (30+) and humid there almost every single day of the year. And there's a lot of rain most of the year. Not my cup of tea.

  • Any deals for South India

    • Surely a cheap flight from Sri Lanka to India should be cheap enough

      • I can't believe there isn't a bridge between the two countries considering how small the gap is - it's like 25km between the countries.

  • Considering Jetstar is around $660 Melbourne to Colombo and that does not include bags or seat selection (or meals or entertainment), this is a pretty okay deal.

  • Sri Lanka is awesome! Everyone should go visit.

    • I have a family member who went maybe 10 years back. Said it's not really that tourism friendly, a lot of things are extortionately expensive like $50 entry to temples etc, and a lot of scams, e.g. if you don't pay the 'looking after your shoes' fee at the temple, the guy will just steal your shoes until you pay him even more. Add to that, the roads are apparently wildly dangerous goat tracks worse than the worst Vietnamese cliffs.

Has any of the above improved?

      • I've been going since 2012 and things have defnitely improved.

yes entry to most touristy places is more expensive for tourists, same as India in this regard.
never experienced the shoes thing though, I actually went out of my way to pay something to the guy at a temple but he kept saying "no no"

Roads have definitely improved since then.
"Cliff roads" would only be on the road to Nuwara Eliya, though I haven't been there again since 2012.

I was there in Jul just gone (2months ago) and we went upto Jaffna along the west coast and then came down the east coast.
        Great resorts around Pasikuda

Trip in 2023 we went down the West coast to Ahungalla

      • Yeah, it’s definitely improved a lot. The country has really pivoted towards making things easier for tourists over the past decade.

Getting around is very straightforward now with Uber and PickMe, which is the local equivalent, and transport is generally very cheap. The road infrastructure has also improved significantly, with a number of new highways cutting down travel times across the country.

Tourist attraction pricing is probably the one part of what you mentioned that still has some truth to it. Foreigners can pay considerably more than locals at some major archaeological sites and attractions, so if you’re visiting a lot of them it can add up. Day-to-day travel, food and transport are still very cheap though.

You’ll still come across the occasional petty scam or someone trying to overcharge tourists, particularly around major attractions, but it’s nowhere near something you’re constantly dealing with. Uber/PickMe also removes a lot of the old taxi/tuk-tuk price negotiation issues. There’s a dedicated Tourist Police division as well if you do run into problems.

      • There are tollways to get where you need to go, and then normal roads from there, unless you’re heading somewhere like Horton Plains, in my experience.

In terms of $$$, local places are dirt cheap, but if you want something like a steak, you’ll probably pay similar prices to most parts of Asia.

The only thing I’d say is avoid the local buses for longer trips. I’d take the intercity coaches instead of the $2 local bus rides 😂. In the city, just use the Metro buses. But often I find tourists like the chaos

  • Ugh, just bought our Sri Lanka flights a week ago… Pity we don't have price protection etc on credit card.

  • Why is it so exe to go sri'lanka ? Comapred to other Asian countries ?

Worth the trip ? The videos online look great but worries me it's not worth the leave

    • It’s the experience and the people compared to the rest of the region.

Every part of the island has something to offer and the country is modern-ish.

    • It's quite far compared to many of them, and not really a tourism destination in the same way Thailand etc are. I have not heard anything good about it personally, even the Sri Lankans I know all seem to refuse to go back there. But I am interested in any real experiences.

      • I’d disagree with the idea that it’s not really a tourism destination. Sri Lanka gets a lot of tourists and the infrastructure for travelling around the country has improved massively over the last decade.

Once you’re actually there though, accommodation, food, Uber/PickMe and day-to-day travel can be very cheap. Some of the major tourist attractions are definitely overpriced for foreigners, which is probably where some of that reputation comes from.

What makes it worthwhile IMO is how much variety you get in a relatively small country. Beaches, surfing, wildlife safaris, tea country and mountains, ancient cities, temples and pretty different climates are all within a few hours of each other.

I’d also be careful reading too much into Sri Lankans overseas choosing not to holiday there. If you grew up somewhere, going back often doesn’t have the same novelty as travelling somewhere completely different, and a trip home can also turn into visiting family rather than actually having a holiday. That doesn’t necessarily say much about whether it’s worthwhile for a first-time tourist.

        • I was born in Sri Lanka but no longer a citizen there. I travel often, been to many countries, but still love going to Sri Lanka for holidays every couple of years. I know it's a bit more expensive compared to Bali or SE Asia for example (especially airfare) but its hospitality aspect is so unique and I just can't help but going there over and over. I'm sure there are many former Sri Lankans thinking the same way. If you go to any random house and say you're hungry, Sri Lankans would feed you with all they have (they'd happily remain hungry as long as the hungry guests are fed). And they'd be deeply offended if you offer money in return. I've seen venders refusing to accept money for their goods and services from guests (especially tourists). Sri Lanka is a special place with some really special people. As I mentioned above, I've felt a similar level of hospitality only in rural areas of Greece/ Crete.
Disclaimer: You still need to use your common sense as you would anywhere else in the world. Above description fits over 90% of Sri Lankans but unfortunately rest of the 10% seems to hang around more touristic areas scamming people (still significantly less so compared to Rome, Paris or Athens for example).

      • Wow. You must be surrounded by some really grumpy Sri Lankans. All Sri Lankans I know are extremely friendly, very joyful people and love their roots. They often go back to their country for holidays and always recommend the island as a top destination (speaking from my own experience as well). Amazing flavourful food (kind of between Malaysian and Indonesian food, very different to indian food), many UNESCO heritage sites, Evergreen rainforests, Waterfalls, Top beaches, Culture, History, and top of it all, amazing people, always willing to help.

        • Although if they are Tamil Sri Lankans, then they probably have a reason to grumpy

      • On the contrary, I've heard nothing but good things about Sri Lanka from a number of different people

  • Best way to add a trip to KUL on the way back?

Currently seeing $1k return on Malaysia airlines to do this

    • If you can layover in Singapore. Fly from singapore to KL instead.. flights are cheap.

  • Damn I want in December

  • Me and a group of 9 friends visited SL about 15 years ago, as well as Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. SL was hands down everyone's favourite. Other than the culture, temples and awesome beaches, the experience of driving through the jungle on the back of a Jeep and then entering an open wetland with over 100 wild elephant is an experience that will stay with me forever. Can't think of anywhere else in the world other than Africa that you can experience something like that

  • That’s great pricing ex-PER - that’s what you’d pay on Jetstar but you’re flying a good airline this time.

Going to be really hard to resist this one.

    • Don't resist, Sri Lanka is an amazing destination. Hopefully Australian's don't ruin it like Bali.

      • The mortgage tells me no but the wanderlust tells me yes. It’s been on my hit list for a long time.

Anything not direct is too hard for your average philistine bogan to know about or bother with…

  • Can you jump off in Singapore or will you lose the return leg?

    • depends if you're using parachute while jumping off.

may lose more than a leg.

      • and likely be the last jump

  • Honestly, put Sri Lanka at the top of your list! I’ve been to over 50 countries, and hands down, the locals there are some of the absolute nicest people you’ll ever meet (reckon it’s got a lot to do with the whole Buddhist culture). I’ve popped over 5 times since 2012, and the gains in their infrastructure, especially around Colombo, are massive. Yeah, some tourist traps will charge a bit, but there are heaps of free spots, the untouched warm beaches are my favourites. Food’s dirt cheap too, you can grab a massive 5-star buffet for under 40 bucks. Plus, the history is unreal with these 5,000 year old pyramid looking structures, and the roads in the city are dead clean. Proper league of its own compared to the rest of South Asia. A few people try to compare it to Thailand, but honestly, it’s a completely different vibe. You don't get any of that dodgy sex tourism scene over there at all. Just dodge a few dodgy tuk tuk drivers and scammers, and you’re all good.

  • Shri Lanka Mater. Appi Shrriiiiiii Lanker, Nummo, Nummo, Nummo, Nummo Mater.

    • Also if you go make you say ‘Are you born!’ to someone. It’s there way of saying ‘Gidday!’

      • ok, that's the way I am going to say that greeting from now on! 😂

      • It's actually 'are you bow one' to be precise (though the meaning is 'may you live longer')
To be honest, this is rather formal way of greeting and not something people say during their day to day catch-ups. They'd usually say something like 'good morning' (in English - don't forget it has a colonial history). But hearing their formal welcome greeting from a tourist would always be appreciated by locals.

  • Anyone aware of how I might book this with a 3 day stopover in Singapore on the way over? Looked at the singapore airlines site but the prices goes to about $1500 one way with stop over
