  • yeah nah

  • Why would you not fly direct for cheaper?

    • Is direct cheaper? $1k-1.1k return on a full fare airline sounds pretty good for prices to Japan these days.

    • Direct around this time is 2-2.5k+

  • i dont know if its inflation but just went to Japan in May 2024 for $400 return in Jetstar. I have been waiting for the similar price to be back

    • Those same Jetstar flights are now $1600

    • Most airlines have increased fuel surcharges due to the US - Iran war.

      https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_AU/latest-news/other-new…

ANA and JAL are the most extreme with more than a doubling of fuel surcharge.

      https://travelweekly.com.au/australians-heading-to-japan-hit…

The one-way surcharge on Australia-Japan itineraries will jump from AU$253 to AU$595, an increase of 135 percent. For return travellers, that means paying AU$1,190 in surcharges alone, up from AU$506.

      • I think part of it is the weak Yen has encouraged a lot of people going to Japan for a holiday, and the high demand allows airlines to charge a premium.

    • They have had the return for free flights multiple times which worked out around $400ish.

      • Yes they used to do it 3 times a Year for 430 ish return to Osaka but this year i havnt even seen once. the lowest i have seen was 400 one way though so do you guys recon we might be able to see any cheap prices next year??

    • That was a long time ago .. and was no luggage, no meals, bad seats.

  • No love for BNE?

    • I wonder what's wrong with Brisbane as not many flight deals are from this city but our population has grown so much, surely there is a higher demand for flights.

    • Never love for BNE except with Jetstar deals it seems.

  • which period is the best temperature wise when its nice and cool? Feb - March?

    • I believe ai would help here

    • You're looking at Spring: March to May

Summer is terribly hot and winter is terribly cold.

Most people go through Spring: March to May or Autumn: September to November, unless you need to go on a specific time. Keep in mind cherry blossom time in late March to early April is busy AF.

I would highly research if these times are good for you

      • Slap on some thermals and a good insulated jacket and you're good for the cold.

    • It's cold with snow still kicking about. Still an awesome time to go because it's off peak!

  • 1h layover • Hong Kong (HKG) ???

    • don't worry, the ground staff will run with you to your next flight gate. I did 55 minutes transfer before. hahaha

    • I remember deplaning in HK and doing a very long walk towards the departure/transit area. Thankfully our layover was 3 hours. Assuming variables are the same (distance between gates and pace of passengers disembarking), 1 hour would be quite a rush, but then I read it's doable and nothing to worry about…

      • I honestly don't know how people have the mindset to book a flight with a 1 hour transfer to anywhere. My anxiety will be off the roof, 2-3 hours seems like the perfect layover given if things arise.

    • it's widely known on social media that cathay staff will run with you to the gate to make sure you make it on time. you can film it if you want

    • Just booked that. Never booked a connection this tight before.

But in this case: no problem

If the original flight arrives on time, it's easy to make. If not, they are still responsible to get you to your destination and their next flight is 2 hours later.

      • The next flight is plausible, assuming they have capacity on the next flight and can get you sorted in time.

    • This seems to be the normal with Cathay Pacific and HK transfers. Even though they're a very efficient airport I still wouldn't risk it. A delay with your incoming flight to HK could result in a half day or day wait for another connecting flight.

  • Can you get a stopover in HK?

Also does Cathay have allowance for ski luggage?

    • You need to book via Cathay website for a stopover.

  • If you are planning to go around may, I wouldnt bother with these deals. I got return flights to tokyo for ~550 for may this year return on china southern, with stopover in Guangzhou, over 1k isnt a deal for flights in may. Definitely wait around if planning to go then. And also from experience cathay pacific long haul is a little crap, maybe I just got a bad experience though.

    • How long was the stopover?

I suppose Guangzhou means powerbanks must be CCC certified?

      • CCC certified only for China domestic flights. No issues for international transfer. Just security screening when transiting in China is a pain.

      • It was 3h stopover, I didnt mind it though because cheap flights and got to eat some nice chinese food in the airport. As for powerbanks, they didnt mind for international transfer, as said by the other guy. They just check to see the specs of the powerbank, not sure what the limit was but I was fine with a non CCC powerbank.

        • Not bad if it's 3 hours.

I remember checking with them on flights to TPE and while transit time was fine on one leg (around 4 hrs), the other was more than 15 hours (unless you pay extra).. in which case, it probably would warrant a stay at an airport hotel.

          • @JaxSantiago: The cheapest option was a 20h and 10h for each way, but for barely any more (less than 50) I could change to the 3h both way stopover, so I chose to do that

    • China southern is a value-focussed carrier while Cathay is a well regarded premium carrier.

Everyone will make their own value judgements with regard to flight spend relative to track record, service, fleet age, legroom, food and seat recline, departure times etc

Dependinge on who you choose to fly with, you can have a brilliant and comfortable long haul flight versus putting up with the flight.

Perhaps Singapore aside, Cathay is ahead of other airlines mentioned in this post.

And, while direct flights have their pluses, and please correct me if I’m wrong, most direct flights go only to Tokyo. Doing so is great if you’re including Tokyo in your trip and want to start there but, if not, factor in additional time and spend to move domestically.

      • I didn’t really get the impression that Cathay Pacific was a premium carrier when I flew with them, my experience wasn’t so good. I found China southern to actually be nicer. Also, I think premium vs value doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, I mean you get there at the same time, I think that money is better spent on experiences while you are on holiday.

        • Fair enough, and sorry to hear that. It's a shame when the expectation doesn't meet up.

True, you get there at the same time, though some people pay for business or first class, too. Everyone will factor value, needs and wants differently for travel.

      • If we're talking about premium carrier that's Singapore Airlines. There's nothing wrong with Cathay but they're just lite-economy.

  • Just checked the February dates ex Perth. Singapore Airlines has matching fares, similar flight times. Just another option.

  • Oh man, nothing from brisbane or gold coast again.

  • What's the issue with Brisbane? No deals but Adelaide features. Is it because Cathay have high loads out of Brisbane and don't need to discount?

  • For business class on those dates, is it worth holding out for a deal or are the prices pretty much what they are now? I'm looking at multicity tickets from Perth to Osaka and Tokyo to Perth in May, currently $4675, and I can't see any historical business class deals for that period.
