[NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD] Free Lifetime GoStarter Plan (Usually $49 Per Year after $0 First Year) with IKEA Family Membership @ GoGet

2590

Found this while looking at IKEA furniture and not wanting to pay for shipping but realising it might be best to use IKEA's delivery or Bunnings Hire Van etc.

Using this link, you get a free LIFETIME membership for their Free GoStarter Plan if you're an IKEA member
(although i wonder if you can just sign up with this link anyways- but IKEA membership is free anyways and get discounts)

Normal sign ups have the first year waived and then a $49 per year subscription.
Save yourself $49 per year and give yourself the option to use their rentals.

Can't see anything in the T's and C's, or in my account that I've just signed up for suggesting an ongoing membership fee.

Joining offer waives first-year membership fee for GoStarter plan when joining via the links on this page worth $49. GoGet membership T&Cs apply. Offer available for new members only. Subject to a pre-authorisation. No ongoing membership fees for the lifetime of your membership, saving you $49 each year. Cancel at any time. Offer expires 1st October 2027.

NOTE: GoGet Carshare currently only operates in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong, Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Update 16 Sep 2026: GoGet Carshare has re-commenced operations in Canberra.

  • GoGet can hire is $0 membership

    https://www.goget.com.au/vans

Assuming this is the same as IKEAs offer in OP?

    • No that's just for vans. This seems to include other vehicle types. Pity it's only for new sign ups. Can't be arsed making a new one

      • New accounts is very fast. Takes 2 mins and can use same phone number plus u get the voucher.

        • What Voucher are you referring to?

  • Business plan is also free; same pricing as Occasional I think

    • Business plan has cheaper rates all you need is a abn

      • It is still asking for ID verification even for business plan?

      • Is there any catches? Like insurance cover or other catches with signing up as a business.

    • Good tip. Ive got GoStarter already but 1 driver is a pain when I need the wife to be DD. GoBusiness seems to allow unlimited drivers.

  • free LIFETIME membership

That's a bit pointless. Why don't you put the net hiring cost so people can make informed decisions.

It's like HP giving out free printers or charging a nominal amount. It's the usage cost (ink, their chips and firmware) that results in so many HP printers put out for council clean up.

    • I've had one of these memberships for years and have found it super handy on the odd occasion that I've needed a van, such as buying a dining table off marketplace or moving house.

      • I have a membership that I almost never use, I think of it kind of like insurance against possibly needing a car. I would like to swap it out for a free one though…

        • New email new account.

          • @ATangk: Yeah, if they really want they can catch you easily (identity verification) but I doubt they care that much. Cancelled my existing membership.

            • @ely: Report back if that works, will you?

              • @caperite: Will do. Cancelling an account apparently takes a week though, so don't hold your breath!

    • Unlike a printer, this doesn't take up space on your desk and you don't have to use it, if you don't like it.

I've signed up for this like 10 years ago and used it maybe 3-4 times. Not a bad deal.

  • Take it to the beach.

    Nothing beats a GoGet holiday.

  • Worst car/van hire place around

    • Why

      • You have to assemble the van first with an Allen Key.

        • " - Voted by 2 other users"

Hope your day gets better you two cranky pants.

      • Ive had van double booked, to then be move to a vehicle that was not accessible due to the operating hours of the location, only finding out after walking all the way over there. No smartcards inside to use, so they direct you to another card to get one. Being hit up for $5000 for damages (to an already beat up piece of crap) saying "the previous driver said it wasnt there when he dropped it off", where i asked for proof and they said no. Told them i will see them in court. Then to top it off, a random charge on my card and was told i went through tolls, where i told them the closet toll to me is 200kms away, bit hard on a 25km round trip, took weeks to get that refund.

        • Frustrating.

Doesn't help all those situations but for others reading - leave yourself enough time to take pics all around the car before starting and after returning. Same process for rental vehicles.

          • @caperite: Yeah but this proves nothing. How do you prove when the photos were taken? How do you prove you didn't take the photos and then key the side of the car?

When renting a car I always make sure I get someone from the company to come and inspect the car in person and then hand to keys directly back to them. If that's not an option - I don't hire from them.

            • @PainToad: You can't, there is no one there, they are just vehicles parked around the place. Yeah some might be parked at businesses, but not sure they have anything to do with GoGet.

            • @PainToad: stampdate on photo , most phones have this…

              • @fprjet:

stampdate on photo , most phones have this…

Yeah cool but proves nothing. How do you prove you just didn't change the clock on your phone?

If there's no way to hand over to a physical person, I wouldn't risk it.

            • @PainToad: Us older generation use a print newspaper in the photos.

US old Hipsters use Crypto for it's proper purpose (not a pseudo stock exchange). Take photo, validate its hash on chain.

              https://opentimestamps.org/

              • @tunzafun001:

Us older generation use a print newspaper in the photos.

I've done this in the past for exit reports at rentals.

But it still doesn't help for car returns. Who's to say you didn't take the photos in the morning and then wreck the car in the afternoon?

Unless you physically hand the keys back to someone who has verified the car, you're still at risk.

                • @PainToad: Yes, hence the modern crypto Blockchain has a hash time stamp.

With a newspaper, you would need to forfeit collecting entirely. Ie. Report it first thing. If you do crash it later,.or see something later. It's on you..

                  • @tunzafun001:

Yes, hence the modern crypto Blockchain has a hash time stamp.

                    Still doesn't help.

                    1:00pm: Return to Ikea
1:01pm: Take photos and add hashed timestamp
                    1:02pm: You walk away
1:05pm: Someone smashes the window with a brick

How do you prove it wasn't you that smashed the window straight after taking the photo? You can't.

                    • @PainToad: I'm lost.

If you return the vehicle at a time stamped time frame. Photo evidence taken.

Then damage after is not your problem.

If they don't have any way to establish when you "drop the vehicle off".. see above re who's problem it is.

                    • @PainToad: Your evidence doesn't have to be 100% reliable. If it goes to court, they have to proof that it was you who caused the damage, not the other way round. The other side will likely have no evidence at all. That means your somewhat reliable evidence will be very helpful.

                    • @PainToad: 1:00pm: Return to Ikea
                      1:00pm: Touch off the tag
1:01pm: Take photos and add hashed timestamp

You have evidence of return van on 1pm and van photo on 1:01pm

1:05pm smashes not count to you.

          • @caperite: Yeah I did that, that's why I said I will see them in court, as apparently the person before me had photos of the van left without damage, funnily enough, when I got there I was on the phone to them and recording the van for all its damage, so I can be heard on the video talking to them upon pickup to unlock the van.

If I were a betting man, I would say they claim off whoever doesn't have proof and never fix the van. I think that's what Hertz got caught doing a few years back, but I could be wrong.

            • @BatmanAU:

Exactly like landlords keeping bonds and never actually fixing anything.

        • thanks

  • Doesn't seem to do anything if you already have an account and on the 1 year free trial.

  • Only Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, and I usually use budget that provide the best value for car rental

  • Clean the car for discount off the rent

    • I've never seen this option.

      • ^newb?

  • I've had mixed experiences with goget. Most of the time it's fine, I've only hired vans and they're all beat up so you need to allow time to document everything though I've never had them try and claim damages. I have however turned up one time to find the vehicle had been broken into and couldn't get another. Another time they cancelled my booking less than 24 hours before hand, didn't even try and rebook something else for me and when I called and complained they wanted to charge me more for the next closest vehicle. Their pricing is all over the place so pay attention to not only the annual fee but the actual rental free as free plans typically have higher rental rates. It is convenient though when everything works as it should.

    • I've used the same van twice recently to move furniture (elderly mum moving out of her home). They sent me a discount voucher so the first rental was like $48 for 24 hours. The second time I only needed it for 4 hours but that was expensive. Overall a good experience.

Also the second time, the van was really dirty inside. Someone had been moving leaky bags of concrete or dirt and if it wasn't that it was fluff everywhere. So I reported it, GoGet followed up and sent me an apology and said they'd cleaned it and taken it up with the previous renter. (no discount code though lol)

  • They leave the car keys in the car. Can’t imagine that’s a great idea in many Melbourne suburbs. If it goes missing and u were the last user I bet they bill u…

    • They're fitted with an immobiliser, you can't start them with the key alone. The thing that's likely what they get broken into for is the fuel card left in them.

  • Unused this to pick up a dirt bike I purchased off guntree

    • So you didn't pick it up?

      • Or picked it up in a different vehicle?

        • Sorry I used this van for free from IKEA Rhodes to pick up a dirt bike I purchased as I didn't have a trailer or wanted to pay for it

    • purchased off guntree

I assume this is the American version of Gumtree?

  • ID verification? meh

    • How can you expect to rent a car/van without verifying ID?

      • just want membership. verify id at time of renting

        • Anonymous rental membership!

  • it does seem like it waives only 1st yr.

*Joining offer waives first-year membership fee for GoStarter plan when joining via the links on this page worth $49. GoGet membership T&Cs apply. Offer available for new members only. Subject to a pre-authorisation. No ongoing membership fees for the lifetime of your membership, saving you $49 each year. Cancel at any time. Offer expires 1st October 2027.

    • In your own comment it literally says "No ongoing membership fees for the lifetime of your membership, saving you $49 each year."

      • my bad you are right. I missed that latter part! They made it sound so confusing by adding the first sentence.

        • they're testing reading comprehension

    • I was a ikea related member for 3-4 yrs, they kept on changing their terms and conditions and I’m not one to read, so one day I called them to confirm it was still free, no one could confirm so I cancelled the membership and just use Bunnings now if I need a van for a couple of hours. They prob needlessly lost a customer for life it seems lol

  • Kinto which is Toyota's hourly car rental doesn't have a membership fee and is free to join. It a very similar service but you use the phone app to unlock the car.

    • Minimum rent is a day, not by hours.

      • Maybe it's your location, but i'm in vic and it's hourly OR daily. For cars or vans.

      • You can rent it by the hour in Sydney.

    • From what I saw they are more expensive than GoGet but you get nicer Toyota cars. And they have no free 80kms that GoGet has for the day.

      • Maybe it's location but it's always been cheaper for me. Plus there isn't a membership fee.

        • Kinto cheaper last I looked

    • I forgot about Kinto. I dismissed it years ago as they had so few locations vs GoGet. Good reminder.

  • This used to be free then they took it away and now its free again?

    • Used to be free for the first year only then they auto billed you for the renewal as most people would forget about it. They've made more plans free on going now but I'd bet they've upped the rental fees to make up for it.

      • Nope.

I got the email in 2015 which was the first time they introduced the annual fee and the free first year.

We’re introducing a $49 annual fee on the GoStarter plan. As you’re an existing member, you’ll be getting $49 driving credit to offset your first annual fee.
Your next invoice - which you will receive over the next week - will include the annual fee for this year. (It will be charged annually in April.)

        • Huh? Your quote of the email literally says there's an annual fee.

          • @apsilon: read my message… that email was when they first introduced the annual fee.

i was already a member since 2014 when the email was sent.

that email was a notification that they no longer offer this for free for IKEA Family member.

            for reference: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/1753851/redir

  • It is asking for ID verification?

    • Yeah, reasonable they need it, but would have preferred to supply only when required, i.e. not on first signup.

  • Don't you have to enter Ikea Family ID somewhere? It never asked, missed a step or something?

    • Nope, got an account working already with no verification

  • Normal car license will work for this?

    • For vans and cars yes

  • Anyone else having issues with the ID verification stage (their site not loading on mobile)?

  • goget/storelocal seems to be offering the same deal with a promo code, 30% off your first booking. not sure whether the promo code needs to be applied during registration or when making the booking

    • T&Cs state "Must complete and submit your GoGet application by 30th of June 2027". So looks like this one's expired.

      • 30 June 2027
        Still > 9 months away

The storeeasy deal seems to be better - you get free annual fee + discount off rental fee

        • Whoops, I misread that.

    • Isn't that deal only waiving first year membership fee vs lifetime w the other deal?

      • It says "Lifetime FREE GoGet Membership + 30% off* your first booking with StoreLocal"

  • It's showing "Free GoStarter" as current plan, is this correct? Or should just be "GoStarter"?

  • So do you have to pay for each time you rent the vehicle?
I'm confused why there'd be a membership fee if you had to pay each time anyway

    • Think of it as paying for uber one but for renting cars/vans. They charge that subscription fee + additional fees as you use their service. That’s my guess at least.

  • Is it cheaper than renting car?

  • I didn't complete the ID verification and the next day it sent me a $50 voucher…. I'm in SA so that's why I didn't go through with the sign up, forgot they had pulled out of SA.

    Promo code is MUXJ50

  • how do they know whether i am a IKEA member?
I signed my account, and they didn't even ask my IKEA member

  • I think a normal car rental is cheaper in general. But this might be a good backup option.

A strange thing that they not mentioned manual or automatic
