  • Ordered lite.
The game play video showed played Zelda OoT with 2x resolution.
Will be interesting with continue improvement of emulation / software support, maybe more 3ds games can be played

    • I have had my 2DS in the drawer for aaaaages, lent it to a friend a while back so they could burn through some of the Pokemons on it without having to pay the insane prices they go for these days. Now, of course, despite not playing that unit in forever, I have an itch. Perfect timing for Retroid here.

      • Why not ask for the 2DS back.

        • Because then I wouldn't be getting a stupid new toy.

But also, we all know the second that little door stop of a console is back in my hands, I'll fire up the homebrew version of Doom for 5 minutes, maybe do a couple Mario Kart races and then when I don't get first in one, I'll turn the unit off, put it back in the drawer, and not see it for another few years.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: Yeah my house is full of things filled with much promise that I haven't turned on in years.

            • @AustriaBargain: You know batteries don't last? and even with charging it every 1-2x months they still won't last past a decade..

              • @cobknob: My regular DS still chops ok original battery despite going through a 4 year didn’t know it existed period.

                • @BusMan247: I've got an original DS I played 10+ years ago and back then the battery was getting on. No original DS battery should be working today especially with moderate usage years and years ago.

                • @BusMan247: Yeah mine was bought in 2007 and I reckon didn’t get used 2011-2026 until my 8yo found it.
Charged up fine and lasts pretty well.

He’s lucky I had a bunch of games on am R4 thingy.

                  • @LuckyDrew: The original DS which I speak of is rated by Nintendo to last 6-10 hours on a full charge depending on screen brightness and usage.

Are you getting 3 hours straight of usage with brightness to max from a demanding title?

Sometimes people forget where they live, how an item is stored, what titles can be power hungry and how many hours you've played.

Temperature, humidity, brightness, hours played, hours on, settings, charging conditions - these all contribute to battery life.

For eg. I have a special edition TOTK controller for the switch, and the battery is not great - in fact it is so bad that my other switch controller holds charge for longer and I bought that in late 2020, that controller has 3+ years on it. Battery conditioning initially also plays a role. Discharging and recharging batteries regularly in frequency is better than every 6x months.

This is the science 📚 behind batteries.

                    • @cobknob: I dunno man. Seems fine hey? But it’s being used by an 8yo for an hour or so at a time.

              • @cobknob: Can still buy batteries for them, even some well regarded brands.

              • @cobknob: My PSP from 2007 that regularly goes a couple years between uses still holds a good 4 or so hours playing most games. The ex's old DSi from 2009/2010 is much the same, still more or less full capacity. iPhone 5c, same story, full day battery. Plugged it in and charged it up a couple of months ago when deciding which phone to give to my eldest (ended up buying the button Barbie phone from JB on sale), aside from being stuck on iOS 12 it did everything perfectly well. In fact, the only thing I can think of that I've ever had the battery die was an old moped that went longer than it should have between use and charges. And that was far from a little lithium pocket battery.

My Wii U tablet is also over a decade old, and also only gets turned on once in a blue moon, and also still holds about the same amount of charge as it ever did, which, to be fair, was never a huge amount, but nonetheless. That's about all the old shit I still have, most of my stuff has long since been traded or gifted to a friend so I don't have too many examples.

Edit: That's not fair. My first Chromebook's battery went. I think. I don't remember what happened. That thing had fallen out of my bag on the highway multiple times, it took a goddamn beating. But the battery I think was losing capacity, or completely died, I think the former, but it's been a while, I don't remember. Anyway, I bought a new battery and it was a hunk of shit that ended up swelling into a balloon, so that got turfed. Still works fine plugged into the wall and is currently used every now and then as a means to get the youngest punching in letters. But yeah, I guess that battery did shit the bed. But again, that poor bastard had the ever loving shit kicked out of it. Absolute workhorse of a computer. Point being, the third party battery sucked ass. Everything else in my list was OEM, there's obviously going to be shit ones, but I think for the most part, it seems companies don't want to sell you something with a battery that will go, and take their reputation with it. Obviously a lot of the cheap Chinese emulators aren't a big AAA price Sony device, but Retroid is pretty ridgy didge, if they sold me something with a battery that didn't last, I'd be surprised and disappointed.

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: I've +voted u for the chromebook story. And this is where I'd like to emphasize usage and everything else I've said in the post above is important to keep in mind.

For eg. my brother has an OG switch and the battery is toast - usage. He had an iPhone 5 - battery is toast, in fact the battery on most phones his owned generally get toasted from brightness and heavy usage. Most of my phones in the last 15+ years suffered battery issues toward the end of its lives.

You get 500-1500 charges approximately ~ and that's it for most devices. A battery from day 1 will NOT be the same on day 2000.

            • @AustriaBargain: regards to the missus

    • Yeah the Lite will have some decent 3DS potential for lighter titles and native/low upscale. The inline triggers are a big selling point for the Lite.

      • I never really play with upscalers (at least not too high) anyway. I've even played on .25/.5 upscale for some real low end PS2 shit. Frankly, for me, half the fun is in pushing the machine as far as I can.

Definitely agree about the triggers too! Lost my N3DSXL almost ten years ago (I still believe my then one year old kiddo left it outside and an opportunistic person walking Maroondah Hwy grabbed it), and those buttons alone are more nostalgic than the two screens to me.

  • Damn, this was sold out a few hours ago when I looked, cheers for the heads up, boss.

*Note, to everyone else: This preorder deal gets a "cheers" instead of a "not a deal" because there's an actual (profanity) discount code included. OzRRP can suck my (profanity)

    • Retroid preorders never "sold out", you are just in a queue for delivery depending on the ordering time.

      • Oh, true. Well, it said sold out on every one when I went to look, and I couldn't buy any of them, so. idk. Silly way to have it setup. Either way, ordered the Lite (with 6GB/double storage, figured that was probably worth the extra 20USD these days), should be a fun new toy!

        • Then it was before the preorders went live, unless you mixed it up with the accessories which do go out of stock.

          • @gcheap: Oh, I had no idea this went live today. Must have coincidentally clicked super early for a change. Either way, got mine ordered now thanks to this post, so I'm happy.

        • 64gb micro sd card is about 30+ AUD anyways, so the extra 20 USD for the double storage is good choice.

      • If it's anything like the RP6 launch people could be waiting months for their pre-orders to be fulfilled.

        • Well, now I feel even better about the 5USD extra I paid for "worry free delivery", which includes refunds for "✅Significantly Delayed – Shipment is significantly delayed beyond the promised delivery date"

    • Seems that you are all out of gum ….

      • It's time to chew ass, and I'm all out of ass.

  • Glad I paid 400 AUD out of pocket for a pro Thor from AliExpress in March. Ram/ssd is driving everything crazy.

    • Lucky duck.
The major issue with the AYN Thor and Retroid Pocket, are that they're too large to fit comfortably into pockets. As Russ would say, it's pocketability is poor. If they're too big that you need to bring a backpack as well, then you would have just resorted to your Valve SteamDeck OLED instead.

The second major issue is the ergonomics. They're aimed at Retro Gaming or 2.5D Games. Not comfortable or suitable for Modern 3D Gaming. Which defeats the point of having such high-end specs inside.

As soon as someone fixes those issues, it will be a major hit. So far it is an underserved market. The closest contenders are the Retroid Pocket 5 Mini, Retroid Pocket 2S, Sony PS Vita Slim (modded) and Nintendo new3DS (non-XL/2D).

  • The Lite looked promising for DS until I realised the 5.5" 1080p top screen only gives you a 4.0" image with integer scaling, while the bottom screen is 4.2". My OCD can't handle that.

  • Alternatively the significantly cheaper Anbernic DS Plus is out shortly for those who are comfortable having a bit less power and sticking to DS and the older retro stuff only.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but those CPU specs are worse than the RP6?

    • You are correct.

      • The RP6 has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
      • The Nova has the Qualcomm Dragonwing QCS8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 without Cellular).

Both are better than the the CPU in the Pocket Duo - Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-7790 (Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 without Cellular).

I suspect they went with a weaker chipset to keep price lower and not to cannibalise the sales of the AYN Thor (same parent company).

      • This vs RP6 with the 2nd screen attachment ?
I think after CBs and discounts from Aliexpress the price difference is not much between the two?

  • Also doesn't have a built-in stylus slot? Whyyy.

  • iPhone Duo ain't got nothing on this

    • Pretty sad we going to see a few more new cheap junk gadgets with Duo in the model name.

      • Can’t wait for the Duo Pro Plus naming to happen

      • This was announced before the iPhone. And the iPhone isn’t even close to the first device with just name either.

  • Yeah I don't understand why anyone is bothering with the cheaper Lite model for 3DS games. If you watch their gameplay video, yes it can run 3DS games, but watch it closely and you'll see some games are not running full speed, which annoys the heck out of me.

If you're gonna get it purely for 3DS, pay extra and get the non-lite model.

If you want to play DS games only, the upcoming Anbernic DS Plus (once they release Rocknix onto it), you can play the entire library at 2x upscale and it will look fantastic on that 4x integer scaled screen.

    • I would also note it's running 2x upscale in all the videos from them that I've seen. Turning that down should ideally help a good deal. But yeah, more power is obviously better, but 223AUD vs 382AUD (both delivered to AU) is a pretty solid difference in price. If it was like 300AUD versus the 382AUD then, yeah, I'd say cough up the extra if you can, but 160 bucks is a pretty substantial gap. A lot of people will be tempted to the cheaper one.

I bought the Lite. I have so many of these damn emulators, I still have a 2DS and a DSi even, but a couple hundred for a fun new toy? I can do that. Almost 400 bucks to play the same shit again? Nah, that's a bit too far for me.

  • Im a big fan of retroid and bought a bunch of their products from the Pocket 2S onwards and their legacy support has been pretty good too.

But, be mindful, the early adopters of the retroid flip and flip 2 both had hinge issues.

I can only hope for everyone third time is the charm.

  • CPU: 1A720@2.6GHz | 4A720@2.4GHz | 3*A520@1.8GHz

What's with the 1x core @2.6GHz? Systems usually have 2,2,4 or 2,6 or 4,4 configs for an octo core chip

    • Lots of examples of Snapdragon SoCs with single "prime" cores of some fashion (can be just a higher clocked "mid" core or an actual "prime" core depending on the SoC). It's been a bit of a staple for quite some time in the Snapdragon 7-series which the chip in the Duo is based on.

      • 7 Gen 1 (2022): 1x A710 @ 2.4 GHz
      • 7+ Gen 2 (2023): 1x X2 @ 2.91 GHz
      • 7 Gen 3 (2023): 1x A715 @ 2.63 GHz
      • 7+ Gen 3 (2024): 1x X4 @ 2.8 GHz
      • 7s Gen 3 (2024): 1x A720 @ 2.5 GHz
      • 7 Gen 4 (2025): 1x A720 @ 2.8 GHz (which this Dragonwing Q-7790 is based on)
      • 7s Gen 4 (2025): 1x A720 @ 2.7 GHz
      • Beyond that, lots of older 800-series SoCs (855, 855+, 860, 865, 865+, 870, 888, 888+ all with 1+3+4), as well as 8-series SoCs prior to the introduction of Oryon as well (8 Gen 1, 8+ Gen 1, 8 Gen 2, 8 Gen 3, 8s Gen 3, and 8s Gen 4 all with 1+3+4 configs)
      • Interesting 🤔 - I don't own or have ever owned a product with a snapdragon soc. Is this a cost factor?

        • It's a way to increase single-core performance. For higher end SoCs with larger X-class cores, now renamed "Ultra" by ARM (e.g. C1-Ultra, C2-Ultra), they take up quite a lot of die space but can be significantly higher performance, so most SoCs will add only one or two of them at most.

For more mid-range SoCs, they often take an existing mid-core (A720, C1-Premium, etc.) and boost the clocks up instead. This saves on die space but offers less of a performance boost (but still a small increase).

  • Worth reminding anyone who is thinking of placing a pre-order that it could take upwards of two months to receive your order. YMMV.

I pre-ordered a Retroid Pocket Nova in clear purple on day one (27/6) and received it on Monday (7/9). Retroid maintains a sort of "shipment dashboard" which is a table of SKUs and colour options, along with which pre-order dates have been sent out and the last shipment date.

It took them two months just to ship out the first clear purple units while some other options had seen shipments for orders in August. For reference, Retroid claimed they would rotate through a day or two of manufacturing each colour, and have all pre-orders for the Nova shipped within three weeks.

The only other source of updates is their Discord server, but they're few and far between (and mainly seem to come from community volunteers rather than staff?).

I will say the new 4:3 OLED screen (bottom screen on the Duo) is really quite good so long as you're not a stickler for oversaturation. I can't really fault the quality of the product, just go in with low expectations for when you'll get your order and hopefully you'll be surprised.

    • For the future, this joke makes more sense when the 2 objects you are comparing perform the same function. Eg a car vs a train (they both get you from a to b). You can’t just pick 2 random objects - the joke doesn’t work when you do that.

      • Did he not mean an Apple iPhone Duo?

        • If he did then the joke still is dumb because usually the 2nd object is cheaper than the 1st object

          • @illusion99: Thanks for rules in comedy. Make sure you seek out Aunty Lisa next

  • How does it compare to the Retroid Pocket 6 in terms of chipset?

    • Much slower. It's closer to the SD 865 than the 8 Gen 2 in the RP6. With that said, this is intended for dual screen games and the Duo chipset is more than cable of 3DS games at 2x resolution.

    • Just wondering how well the chipset will handle decoding/streaming? Might be a good to use this as a moonlight/artemis client.

  • Would this be able to run ps2 games like MGS2/SilentHill4?

    • I am by no means an expert, and it depends what you want out of it / what you consider playable, but when the Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini came out, which I believe to be weaker spec'd than this unit (I say believe because I am yet to look at the specs for this, I kind of just blindly bought it yesterday like a (profanity) and will play catchup later today), I was playing PS2 games happily on it at full speed. I clocked Hit & Run, Spider-Man 2, GTA 3 / Vice City, Tony Hawk 3 / 4, and a fair few others happily with stock settings at full speed on Aether or Nether or whatever emulator it was. The only game that gave me any grump was Battlefront 2, and even then, I swapped like two settings and got it full speed.

Again, depends what you want out of it. If you want 10x upscaling, no. If you wanna play it native or maybe a 2x or so, I think you should be right. But I am just an internet (profanity), there's every chance I'm wrong.

      • PS2 games with zero upscaling is all I need, thanks :D

  • I just ordered an Odin 3 Max. This seems way slower. Is this only good for DS/3DS games? I already have 2 3DS, is this worth it?

    • Odin 3 is a lot faster.
imo 3DS is still the best experience for 3DS just because 3D screen + resistive touchscreen with stylus
The pocket duo is more versatile though, asides from being the best form factor for dual screen, you can still play single screen games on one screen and have a video/guide/discord up on the second screen.

Personally I decided to wait for a future iteration with more power.
