Hi OzBargainers,
I'm after some advice on roadside assistance for a petrol car based on the Gold Coast.
I'm currently with NRMA, paying about $137/year for their Everyday Care plan. I have never used it though, so I'm wondering if I'm overpaying.
I noticed RACQ has a $80/year plan (RACQ Everyday Lite). That's a decent saving, but I want to make sure it's not a case of getting what you pay for.
A few things I'm trying to work out:
Coverage limits: I know the RACQ Everyday Lite plan is vehicle-based and covers up to 50km to attend, but it does not include towing. NRMA's Everyday Care seems to include 25km metro towing. For a petrol car on the Gold Coast, is 50km attendance without towing a dealbreaker?
Service quality: Has anyone had experience with RACQ's roadside assistance in the Gold Coast/Queensland area? I've seen Canstar rate NRMA highly for comprehensiveness and value in Queensland, but I'm curious about real-world experiences.
Alternatives: Are there other providers worth considering? I've seen Budget Direct mentioned (around $75/year), but I'm not sure if they're any better.
Basically, is the $57/year saving worth switching to RACQ, or should I stick with NRMA for better coverage?
Any advice or personal experiences would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Edit: my insurance policy is with NRMA
I ditched roadside assist a while ago - although our current family vehicle has roadside assist while ists under warranty.
Have a jump starter pack in the family car. A set of jumper leads in my car. Can change a tyre, and have spare in the vehicle. The savings ive made on roadside assist are more than the tow truck cost getting my kid's car home after it blew a wheel bearing badly.
New cars dont often break dow, so if you can change a tyre, keep fuel in the tank and carry a jump starter youll save the coat of roadside assist and be able to pay a tow truck if you ever need one.
