  • Scary !!!!!!!

  • It depresses me how much this mindless exercise in consumerism has infested Australia. I doubt even a fraction of the mongs who participate have even heard of Samhain or All Hallows Eve.

    • Agreed. Boxing Day is the worst.

      • Fair point, I also doubt many acknowledge or properly understand the traditions of Christmas & Easter…but would be unwilling to give them up.

        • You mean Saturnalia and celebrations of Eostre?

          • @goodwillN1: Yeah whatever they were called in Zeitgeist

          • @goodwillN1: Absolutely. Funny how the Christian holy days align snd then they bitch about eggs and bunnies or Yuletide logs. The “true meaning” of these days keeps seeping through.

        • Yeah we used to be big on gifts but really it’s a good reason to just bring family together

    • Complains about interest rates - goes to Costco and buys $149.99 inflatable dogs.

    • Why can't we adopt Thanksgiving from the yanks?
No consumerism there, and similar origins to Halloween, i.e. harvest festival.

      • You mean the huge drive to buy and serve copious amounts of food? Also been hijacked long time ago, sorry.

        • Thats every festival and big family gathering ever, from any culture. What planet are you from?

    • It's incredibly fun for children. It encourages communities to interact and share in a fun activity.
My 4 kids hadn't met many of our elderly neighbours- we didn't really ever have a reason to fo knock on their door and say hi to the 80 year old lady on the next street over. The neighbours put out one pumpkin or one ghost decoration and the joy it brings to them to give a treat to their local kids and have a chat with them is worth every penny. The kids learn manners and politeness in a real life exercise. The old neighbours get to meet some sweet kids and connect for a few minutes if they want to.
The kids also really enjoy giving out lollies to other children, they love decorating the front yard and the excitement of the week looking at all the 'spooky' front yards that pop up in the area.
We live in Adelaide near the beach and it really is a very fun night with literally hundreds over houses participating. A bit like driving around looking at christmas lights.
So sure, there's some consumermism- but if that's all you take from it then you probably don't have small children or you're a bit of a grinch- which is fine.
Just keep an open mind to things that encourage socialising, fun and 'tradition' in communities with lots of young families. Not everything that's been honed in the USA is crap.
The effort that some people make (like the Christmas lights example) to make it exciting for kids is such an awesome old school Australian attitude towards a relatively newer seasonal event in our country.
It brings people together and puts a smile on their face- not just the kids either.
      Can't be that horrible.

  • I like the fake shutters on that house in the photo. Is that even in Australia?

  • Teach your kids how to be scabs day

  • Better than garden nomes.
