Charger with Recovery

I need to fix a few dead car batteries, iv searched and couldn't find anything about this so thought I'd ask this group.

Anything to be concerned about?

It's for big batteries (3 boat batteries)

    • I also got that one.

      • have you used them on recovery? were you able to resurrect a dead / old battery that booster pack couldn't get going?

For some extra context, boat has 3 truck sized batteries and my dad's been told they all need replacing - i'm thinking I'll pull them all out, try to bring back from the dead - maybe save 1k with a temporary measure

        • I’ve used the recovery function on 3 batteries, one wouldn’t recover and two of them did. Of the two that did recover they were D23 sized batteries and I got an extra 8-12 months out of them. They are substantially smaller than truck batteries which I presume are N70ZZ or bigger in sizes

  • Can chargers like these be used on the battery in situ, or do you need to remove the battery from the car first?

    • Can be used with the battery in the car, and connected up, but it works best to just remove the negative terminal clamp and charge with the battery disconnected.

      • What benefit is there to disconnect the battery?

        • Agree, the tiny about of quescuient curent on a resting car, would no effect on the charger.

  • I got the Ozito one from bunnings. It had a recovery mode - worked ok on my car battery after I left a light on then went on holiday

  • Recovery mode only works if the batteries are in a state to be recovered. You cant make "new" batteries out of old batteries. That being said, it isnt a bad idea to have a charger that has this option, as it's always going to be worth a charge just to see how dead they are. But dont get your hopes up, or blame a "shit charger" if you try it and the battery is still (fropanity) after you have tried to recover it.

    • Pretty much, otherwise no one would ever buy a new battery.

  • You can try but I find that if a dead battery has drained for a while and I've left it, it's pretty much dead.

Having said that, I'd still buy a charger to see if you can recovery you. It will be handy when you get new batteries to recondition them twice yearly due to infrequent use.

How many batteries does the boat require at the same time?

    • boat requires 3
as for cars, there's a vw, jeep, range rover, jag, bmw, porsche and dodge that he registers one at a time and rotates through

      • If you need 3 at a time, you may also need a battery tester.

What if 2 can be recovered and the third can't but you won't know as the engine won't turn over?

        • that's a very good point … i need a battery tester … will grab one at the same time since yesterday was payday and it's burning a hole in my pocket :)

      • as for cars, there's a vw, jeep, range rover, jag, bmw, porsche and dodge that he registers one at a time and rotates through

How does this work? 7 cars and 6 month minimum rego … so a car is potentially off the road for ~3 years? Seems like a massive job to keep them running while they're off the road.

Are of them appreciating (except the porsche)?

        • South Australia, 3 month rego … all of them are depreciating massively, but he's old and losing his marbles and spending his inheritance so my sister and I mostly leave him to it

  • soooo, i went down a rabbit hole:
    lvyuan
    giantz
    maxxlee
    Ailrinni
and all the off brands in between and decided to just spend a little more and get the noco 5 amp …

yes, it'll take 24 hours per battery, but the main thing is to recover batteries and noco seems to be the best at that - if it saves one battery, then it's worth paying a little extra - when there's 9 batteries (plus my former housemate who's car is still at my house with a dead battery that needs a jump to start every time)

Supercheap have a special, it's not the best that it's ever been, but it's $8 more expensive than the cheapest it's been in the last 12 months - it's on the way home - local warranty - done deal!

    • Good choice.

I have the CTEK mxs 5.0. An OZB favourite.

The benefit of the one you bought is that is can force charge a battery showing 0 Volts.

CTEK requires a minimum of 2V. You can trick the CTEK to charge from 0V, however if a battery is depleted to 0V, it's not going to last long even if you can charge it. Time for a new battery rather than risk getting stranded.

      Down to 2V automatically

  • What voltage are the batteries at? How long have they been at that voltage?

    • Wouldn't have a clue, I'm not good at electrical, I just figured I'll plug it in and see what happens, there's a few batteries to test it on so will see how it goes

  • I have this https://no.co/genius10 and it’s worth the money. Saved 2 of my batteries.

    • Nice, I left the housemates battery on charge overnight, it looks good this morning, but thought i'd leave it on charge through the day and disconnect it when i get home (didn't disconnect the terminals, just connected)

      • Went to try it again Sunday - battery dead again

Safe to say, his battery is dead & gone
