  • People will hate this take, but this and the Alpha PHEV are Australia's two most well rounded utes.

    • I have the Alpha PHEV. It is outstanding, and these newer models are even better (with integrated brake controller, upgraded OS, 240V outlets etc.). Assuming this model is the same, but my one runs on 91RON, which costs 20% less than diesel at the moment. So massive torque and reasonable running costs even when towing (I get 9L/100km with a flat battery on the highway and 16L/100km towing a 2 tonne camper). Will never go back.

      • Good car. Brother has the 3.0L Diesel on order. It's a monster. Plus updated tech and interior.

      • What type of fuel economy do you get when the battery is full?

        • Hard to say. Most short trips I just do in full EV. Don't really take any notice of usage as I charge every day. Would get roughly 90km on a charge, I guess.

    • I have a shark but I agree with you. I wanted the GWM Alpha PHEV but they didn’t release it in time for me to get FBT discount so I went the shark.

      The shark is awesome though

  • This does seem like very good value.

Electric range seems too good to be true for battery size and full 4WD system.

    • What is the battery only range, I could only see combined?

      • “electric-only driving range is quoted at 115km based on the more lenient NEDC test”

        • Does seem generous, but even 80km would cover 90% of my trips.

          • @mskeggs: I have a plug in (J7 SHS), range is 92km after a full charge, with regen in the morning traffic and afternoon traffic, a total of about 70k travelling up and down (combined), I usually get back home with about 30 to 35km range. It just really depends on the regen settings you have (mine is on medium) and if you are mostly doing 100km/h on freeway driving or citing driving. But decent either way.

          • @mskeggs: this is the real kicker and why PHEV could be the way for a lot of people.

almost all of my driving by trip is very short distance; easy 95% of my trips are 20km return at most.

but, our household only has one car and isn't interested in getting a second. so our car also needs to handle the 4-5 times a year we do 1000km road trips or visit remote the bush property.

i would be very surprised if there aren't a huge amount of other households in a similar situation. i'd love to cover the small trips in an EV, but my car has to do double duty. if someone made a PHEV AWD wagon (proper AWD with a modicum of ground clearance that is) i'd be seriously thinking about buying it…

              • @semaj: that's not a wagon!

              • @semaj: Only 1.5T towing, and $21k more expensive than this.

            • @jrowls: A 30kwh battery is easy to recharge from a normal PowerPoint too, making it much more flexible.
It's less of a hardship to plug in the car when you get home than to stop for petrol once a fortnight.

            • @jrowls: This is my situation to a tee. Although I required a tow capable vehicle for our 17' poptop caravan.

Bought a Denza B5L on launch in January and it has been fantastic.

Approx 90 KMs EV only range with 900kms combined with petrol.

A Shark could have done the job but the Wife did not want a ute

            • @jrowls: Downside of a PHEV is you have all of the downsides of an ICE vehicle. I think the future is more likely that people hire a vehicle for the one off long trip.

              • @OzzyBrak: Yeah I get that you have all the downsides, I think that’s something people are willing to cop for the benefits.

Rental is probably a good option for some, but if you need to go off road or if you have gear and setups and stuff it starts to make less sense. Plus the flexibility - it’s worth a lot to me to be able to just get up at 5am start packing and go. If you are going to the snow once a year or something it’s probably fine but any more than that, the rental situation doesn’t necessarily make sense.

Unless that is you have one car and drive a lot of kms for commuting etc because then the cost equation is something else.

    • The caveat with GWM is the battery is NMC, and not the arguably safer, but less range per kg LFP battery.

      • I'm pretty sure the battery on the Cannon Hi4-T is LFP - Lithium Ion Phosphate
(the second part was right though, it is the the safer and therefore now preferred industry standard)

        • I posted that while sitting at the GWM dealers desk….

He said only the Ora and H6 (non GT) have LFP.
          Everything else is NMC.

Doesn't mean the dealer is right though I guess…

I looked under the H6GTPHEV and it was NMC labelled.

  • damm not badd

  • Hold on till next month it will be $2k cheaper because thats what they do .

  • Not bad, only a bit more than a camry

    • Camry with vinyl seat option is nearly $60k now. Yup, we live in that world now. Then again, the average wage is now $100k and if making $99k, the Aus Government officially labels you as poor.

  • Is this the disel one?

    • This is the ptrol one

  • Can't wait! I will be the envy of all the parents when I pick up my grandkids from school in this beast!

    • I'd hate to burst your bubble gramps…

    • Sounds like you should buy a LX600

  • turn this ute into an suv, and add 4k price, im sold.

  • when can I get the 7 seater suv in 30k phev ??

    • Not from a Jedi (or Toyota)

    • In 5 to 10 years.

  • Ive been thinking about a BYD but hnestly this is much cheaper - looks like a no brainer-

Not sure about the TUB size though.

    • Much more capable off-road too if that's your thing. Plus GWM have been in Australia a long time with plenty of dealerships.

      • The shark 6 performance with 3.5t towing model is 67k. This is crazy price difference

  • What's the difference between this and the canon alpha phev?

    • This one is smaller - Hilux size. Αlpha is Landcruiser size.

      • So it's a different ute…. they should have done something about their shitty styling… car looks like its 15 years old

        • Alpha $10k more ATM after $2k cash backs.

        • Alpha looks much better imo. Also has a 3L diesel option if you need to tow.

          • @BestTechAdvisor: I thought all versions are 3.5t towing

            • @bex000: Yes, but the 3L is going to tow much better, especially uphill or when you need to overtake.

  • Think this is going to be very popular, the payload has been increased by about 180kgs on this new model PHEV to 835kg. Still below most Rangers and Hilux but will probably be sufficient for average person.
I really cant see why anyone towing would choose the Shark over this.

    • That is still very good for coil springs. Rangers and Hilux come with leaf springs. so not really apples to apples comparison.

      • The standard cannon PHEV is on leaf springs at the rear aswell, only the Alpha PHEV is coil at the rear.

Checkout GWM’s yt vid on it, seems to address a lot of the little things the Alpha missed like the spare tyre placement, multiple 240v in the tub, cruise control integrated back to the steering wheel and not a stalk, only thing it doesn’t have is the center and front diff lock like the alpha.

        • Oh yeah. you are right. Less payload is because of the battery I guess.

    • Payload enough to be exempt from FBT yet?

  • Looks better than the shark, $6k cheaper too with ABN.

  • Is the spare tyre still mounted in the Tray?

    • No, under the tray on this one.

    • Thats only the Alpha.

  • These look good, I'd really love to get a ute again, and a PHEV would be a good option, however I am not paying the SA goverments stupid rego rates for it.

    • How much for rego in SA?

      • Around $1250 for a ute, or $700 for anything "not commercial".

  • This or the soon to be released Chery Stockman with the diesel PHEV? Some towing and general driving town and motorways.

    • Diesel + PHEV seems unwise
Short journeys on diesel are already a poor combo for DPF , they take longer to warm up, and the engines are heavier (probably moot given the stack of batteries)

      • Why would you use diesel in short journey instead of full ev mode?

Would a wise engineer not include hybrid load mode to regen dpf when full at any speed? Which is why diesel and phev is actually very wise.

  • That’s a lot to spend on scrap metal

    • Oh yeah? What are you - or the majority of people who buy a ute - doing where this couldn't realistically replace a Ranger or Hilux?

I'd probably be a bit cautious taking it around a lap of AU (even though the engines they use in these are probably more reliable than a Rangers!), but as a work ute? This, the Shark and even the upcoming Stockman are really hard to beat for their price.

  • holyshit shark killer

    • That's a great band name.

  • hopefully this will put the squeeze on the JAC Hunter driveaway pricing

    • Hopefully this will put the squeeze on the stockman

  • Is it a bit smaller than BYD Shark on the inside?

  • Still holding out for the Chery Stockman, but damn these look nice!

  • This is a lot of ute for the money… I was also looking at the Stockman - buit with diesel now at 3 bucks a litre maybe petrol is the better choice!
