  • Lol, I had them a couple of years ago from Costco too and it was really good but it's so rich you won't be able to eat a lot.

    • Challenge accepted

    • I've never had this issue with earung too much wagyu

      • wait until you try eating it though

        • Wait till you try rearing one

    • This is something I wish to find out first hand.

    • You have to be rich to eat a lot

      • "You have to be rich to eat ANY"…

  • Thanks for the description!

    • Japanese Wagyu is easily $200+/kg

        • You just gotta cook it properly. Wrap it in 2-3 layers of paper towels, then microwave on high for 10-15 min max. Serve with a generous helping of gravox and BBQ sauce.

          • @Denbo:

You just gotta cook it properly.

            I need some for Carpaccio…

          • @Denbo: I cut it into chunks and cook it in a heavy curry sauce. I save a bit of money by adding slices frankfurters to the curry too. My dogs love it.

          • @Denbo: Microwave yuck

        • Stick to your minute steak.

    • How is it not a bargain?

      • Cause it's EFFIN expensive?

        • And? OzBargain isn't exclusively for cheap products lol, some of us want bargains on expensive products too!

  • Your description has GTA radio commercial vibes

    • From DJ Cara of Non-Stop FM

  • Is this a better high yield investment than the BMW?

    • Much better, here you will be paying only once at the time of the purchase.

    • oh since when BMW a high yield investment now? I thought only the Merc. lol

      • BMW's inched ahead due to less wear and tear on moveable parts as BMW drivers don't use their indicators.

    • Best Meat Wagyu?

    • Definitely, this gets your closer to a heart attack which can mean big $$$ payout for your loved ones.

  • Really good stuff but it’s only as good as you cook it, never grill it unless you want some backyard pyrotechnics. Frying pan, high heat, and cook a smaller portion than typical steaks.

    • So like you need to cut in small portions? These come in big bulk so how long can it last and stay "fresh" once vacuum seal is broken?

      • Portion, vacuum seal, freeze

        • To quote Gordon Ramsay: "FROZEN!??"

          • @Cluster: Thawed before you're going to cook it, but yes.

      • Smaller portions because this stuff is super rich. If you can flog $500 on some beef, I’m sure an extra $40 on a vacuum sealer to put it back in the freezer wouldnt go amiss. Opened and refrigerated it’ll last 3 days max, would have to be resealed and frozen quickly.

        • Thanks for the tips. Any recommended vacuum sealer?

          • @cloudie9: sunbeam, Aldi, FoodSaver. any decent one will do the job. We have tried many over the years as my brother is a farmer and we have friends that are butchers so we process and vac seal a lot of meat. One day eventually we will get a butcher shop one from a bankruptcy sale but the home ones do a good job (albeit slower).

          • @cloudie9: Ink bird

  • Many countries produce Wagyu now, so no Australia and Japan are not the only countries.

    • Indeed. Google says 34 to 36 countries, although there is endless debate on what is 'true' Wagyu beef

    • Not true. Only japan and Australia have full blooded wagyu. Other countries might have breeds mixed with some wagyu lineage.

    • Wagyu yes, Waygu A5 no - Japan only.

Having tried both A5 and "standard" MS9 in Japan I much prefer Australian Waygu MS9. Even rump at that level has a ton of intramuscular fat and is delicious.

Our family had a meal at top steak restaurant in Tokyo with both types of steak and there was A5 left. Just too rich to eat much of it.

      • MS9 and A5 are basically the same, they are simply the grading systems from their respective countries. there is no standard MS9 in Japan, Japan uses BMS and BMS 9 is not directly equiv to an MS9, just as there is no A5 in Australia (unless it was imported like this costco meat), if it is MS9 it came from Australia or somewhere else that uses MS system.

BMS 9 in Japan is a lower marbling level than Wagyu A5 (A5 is generally BMS 11 or 12).

        • No not even close. MS9 is no where near the same marbling as A5. Personally I'd take MS9 any day. I have some MS9 in my freezer right now. And had a lot of A5 in Japan and to me it's just too rich.

          • @tonydav: You seem to have a lack of understanding of what A5 and MS9 is. A5 is an awful rating system as refers to a wide range of marbling.

in Japan A5 refers to meat that ranges from BMS 8 to 12. mostly top end restaurants would all be 11 or 12 and hence would call an entry level 8 or 9 as BMS so they are not affecting the rep for top quality Wagyu. Australia's ratings go from 0-9+ So top end A5 is the same in Australia as MS9+. In Japan when they serve you BMS 9 it is at the very lower end of the 5 scale (noting the A is meaningless in meat quality terms) so would be roughly equiv to about our MS8.

            • @gromit: And you are entirely missing the point I'm making. I'm not talking about BMS. Not even sure why you mention that.

I'm comparing actual A5 steak with actual Australian Waygu MS9 steak. Not complicated.

              • @tonydav: because you said you had standard MS9 and A5 in a Japanese restaurant. The fact is there is no such standard MS9 in Japan. and you can't compare an A5 steak with a MS9 Australian steak unless you know the BMS score as an A5 can range from MS8 to MS9+ on the Australian scoring system.

or to put it another way. an MS9 IS A5, as is an MS9+ and MS8. So comparing an A5 to MS9 makes no sense as all MS9's are A5 but not all A5's are MS9. the closest you can do is compare the Japanese BMS to MS scores.

Its like saying I had Grade 1 Aubergine and I also ate an Eggplant, I definitely prefer Aubergine over eggplant.

  • Spotted these at Costco Auburn (Lidcombe, NSW) for the same price last Saturday as well.

  • From the photo, paying $420 for a lump of beef seems like a wild concept to me as a native Ozbargainer.

    • What better accessory to the $423 RM Williams boots bargain posted a few days ago though.

      • Yeah, the cost-of-living crisis is SO yesterday.
A mere thought bubble in Murdoch's eyes.

  • The steaks are high in this post.

  • Tried it when it was much cheaper at Costco, but lately it's not worth it anymore since the price has gone up so much.

  • Any in wa?

    • Nothing yesterday that I could see.

  • I wonder if costco applies consistent pricing across all states.

  • At those prices there will surely be some that arent sold; so wait until the use by date and jump in at the last moment.

  • Japanese A5 Wagyu Rib Eye $144.99/kg

    A5 is a bit small… I'd want at least A4…

  • eating fat

    • Fat = flavour

      • Fat = Heart Attack

        • That's probably not how those cows died.

        • Its not fat
          its PHAT

    • The fat you eat is the fat you wear.
Excess protein doesn't automatically go to muscle (especially if you don't train), most people are lead to believe they need more than they do from these industries).

Red and processed meat is also a probable type 2a carcinogen.

  • I do want to try it, but honestly it just looks like a slab of fat… I'm sure it must taste good, but is actually 'meat' lol

    • grilled correctly the fat mostly melts leaving a tender and flavourful piece of meat

      • It looks like only 5% actual meat though lol

        • It looks like only 5% actual meat though lol

          I think you're right…😲

    • Fatty A5 wagyu is often best enjoyed in sukiyaki, believe it or not. Grilling is generally better suited to leaner cuts.

    • try eating it with rice.. cooked rice with a rice cooker… dont use colander.

  • Loving the description!

  • Never seen Japanese wagyu at Marsden Park Costco

    • I have seen it there. But not for a while. Possibly they did the usual move it somewhere else and not tell us.

  • Ever wanted to know what metmyoglobin tastes like?

    • It isn't on my bucket list.

  • Oh man, I've been hanging out for this. When's it hitting Melbourne?

    • Saw this in Ringwood last Thursday.

  • Fat in meat creates flavour. Good products cost money. If either are not for you then don't buy it, no stress. But for those who enjoy wagyu this is a half decent deal. Noting that Australian Meat Emporium in Sydney has MB9 Porterhouse steak at $119Kg, so you have a decent choice.

    • Surprised to find they have 1.5kg Kosher Salt for $10.

      • What is this neg about?

        Probably too salty.

    • I purchased a whole wagyu rump MS8-9 from Wesfresh in Blacktown. Was amazing. $30/kg.

      • Yep, even our local produce market sells MB '8/9' at low prices and is pretty good. But I'm not convinced it's actually anywhere near 8/9, more like 4/5. Still tastes good though and for that price you can do what you want with it.

  • These go good in the microwave

  • They should sell medical insurance together as a package 😂

    • There is nothing that can be done to bring those cows back to life.

  • Anyone know if Lidcombe has this? 144 is a bargain for A5

    • It's a good price as is it rarely discounts, but wouldn't say it's a bargain.

We bought A5 striploin (NY strip) at the same price ($145/kg) at Lidcombe, while ribeye is usually a better cut, but striploin is more balanced in meat-to-fat ratio.

      • Hence why said it's a bargain. I haven't seen this price for A5 in quite some time, striplion is one tier below in terms of pricing. For comparison Osawa is around $230/KG for scotch fillet when not on sale. Having said that their A5 is amazing, no doubt Costco would be just as good.
