I Built a Free Web Radio Player — Any Country's Stations, No App or Account (World Radio), Listen on PC, Android or iPhones

Side project of mine — posting in case it's useful to anyone here, and I'd genuinely like some feedback.

World Radio plays live radio from across the World, so you pick a country or genre and get the stations for it. Plenty of Australian ones in there. No account, nothing to install, free.

Things that ended up in there, mostly because other apps annoyed me:

  • It keeps playing on a locked phone, so next/back work from a car head unit or steering wheel buttons
  • No pause button, deliberately — live radio has no paused state, and an accidental pause from a steering wheel ends the session
  • Favourites, history and presets are stored on your device, so there's still no account to make
  • Install it to your home screen and it behaves like an app — nothing to download from a store, nothing to update
  • Driving Mode: oversized next/back buttons and the station name in huge type, for when you're actually in the car
  • Surprise Me picks a random station, and quietly tries another one if the first is dead
  • It learns which stations are flaky on your connection and stops putting those in front of you
  • Reopening picks up the station you left on, and it recovers by itself after a phone call ends or you drop off home wifi mid-song

I'm the solo developer, so it's rough in places. Happy to hear what's broken, missing or just annoying.

  • Can't zoom in far enough on map. Lots of sydney stations, but once a station is selected the large box covers all other stations.

    • Thank you mate. I will check this and try to improve UI, especially zooming on the map.

    • I have added deep zoom function now. Please try again and see if that can help more stations. Please try and you will be able to see more stations and click through it. Also, if you go to explorer and country and choose Australia, it will have many many more stations for you to choose.

  • Is there a way to use it without the globe bullshit? It’s slow, laggy, doesn’t load in sections and can’t be zoomed in enough.

A list would work much easier. Select a country, state, city, and it just lists stations. Or pick a city and say “within 10, 25, 50, 100km… etc.

    • sorry for that. i am working on map so its laggy. I will keep working to fix it and please come back and try again in 1-2 days and I promise map will behave better. Whole point of having this map is to provide some fun for people and make it interactive. However, I am aware the smooth functioning is the most important thing and if I cant fix map and its smooth movement, I will remove it. Thanks for that feedback

    • Just have webGL disable in your browser by default - quickest blank page yet lol OP must be doing one hell of an interactive map for it to be slow

      • Please elaborate. I have improved speed now. Please try again and let me know if its any better.

    • I have added deep zoom function now. Also improved speed. I hope its better now. Also, if you go to country in explorer mode, you will see many many stations

  • I used to use Rama Radio but it didn't download on my new laptop…

The reason I got it was to actually record radio - a couple of times my kids were on it and without an old cassette player, we couldn't record.

I got desperate enough one day that I actually have a 'video' on my radio while I recorded something.

So if it has a recording function, that is even better.

    • Thanks. I will explore record function in coming days.

  • Amazing the difference in reception people get when they've actually put some thought into something, and made something people actually want.

    • Thank you very much.

  • Wow. I have had a full unit for several years now. It cost a fortune then, and still nowhere near cheap.
Would this run on an old touchpad with Bookshelf speaker.?
Quick "search" for range found John farnham (only Australia), Celine Dion (8 Links), Doris Day (1950S, 3), Nat king Cole (1960's,2), Xmas, Dozens)
    Absolutely superb!

    • Thank you so much my friend for your feedback. Yes, this should anywhere where a browser can run and you can open any website. I even tried on my smart TV browser and its working perfectly fine there as well. So yes, there is no restrictions.

  • I like it. Here are my suggestions after 10 mins of use…

Can you make the explore & favourites menu pinable? The globe is pretty, but I found it easier to use Explore & Search to find the stuff I want.
Can you add some stream info like the bitrate etc

    • Thank you for your suggestion. I will work on these improvements.

  • Hey, this is great.. tested for 10 minutes and it works well.. Some feedback to make it better

    1. The Globe zoom is too slow.. it didnt actually load any stations for me.
    2. The Countries list is not in alphabetical order, while there is a search function, it would be good if it was in alphabetical order
    3. A mobile app would be amazing that can be controlled using steering controls like other media players.
    • Thank you mate.

The Globe zoom is too slow.. it didnt actually load any stations for me. - I m working to improve the Globe zoom function right now and hoping to get it fixed soon.

The Countries list is not in alphabetical order, while there is a search function, it would be good if it was in alphabetical order - this is easy however I currently put the country in the order of having max stations to least station thinking that people may find it easy that way however I may reshuffle this based on alphabetic order

A mobile app would be amazing that can be controlled using steering controls like other media players.- thats the next plan for sure. BTW - I do have driving mode right now so even if you play on phone and connected to your car speaker/controls via bluetooth, you can control next station -back station, volume etc using car steering controls. Please try and let me know how it works for you. Also, you can lock your phone screen and put in the pocket and radio will keep playing and you can go to next or back stations using car steering controls. There is some issue as it sometimes looses the player control due to native behaviours of iphone/android operating systems however I am working to find better solution.

    • I have added deep zoom function now. Please try again and see if that can help more stations. Please try that Deep Zoom button now.

  • very cool, well done OP

    • Thank you very much. I am glad you liked it.

  • Very neat its clear you put a lot of work into this. Good job!

    • Thank you so much. It means a lot to me.

  • This is very cool!
I can't see it in the about or elsewhere; what do the colours on the dots mean? Thanks!

    • Thank you very much. I am glad you liked it. Colors represent various genre. If you click news on top, it will show all green dots.. etc.

      • Thanks!

        • You are welcome

  • A cool project, nice job.

    Some feedback:

Using Firefox on Linux, the dots don't appear on the globe. However if you search or select a station from the list, the dot appears. Works OK on Chrome on Linux, works OK in Firefox on MacOS.

Would be good to be able to zoom in further - can only zoom in to see half of Australia, I would like to be able to zoom in to a metro area.

What would be cool - if you selected a country in the list, show a 2D map of that country and allow selection from that.

    • Thank you very much. I am glad you liked it.

I have added Deep Zoom function now. Please try that and you will like it. I like your suggestion about country 2d map. let me try that.

      • Great the deep zoom is excellent, thanks for the update

        • Thank you again.

    • Hi, me again. I just tried on Firefox and I can see dots nicely. No issue at my end.

      • OK I tried in a private window and it is working, it is probably one of my installed extensions interfering.

        • Thanks for checking. I really appreciate it.

  • This is a very cool little project!
Where do you get your streams from though? I don't listen to radio much anymore, but there is only 2 stations showing around me and I know there are numerous others.

    • Thank you very much. I am glad you liked it. Its coming from a publicly available API for radio stations. I have added deep zoom function now. Please try again and see if that can help more stations. Also, best way to find all stations is to choose your country from explorer option on top and it will display many more stations. Please try that. I cant plot 50K dots on world map as it will be too crowded so I am only plotting 4-5K dots in map and all other stations are accessible by going to explorer/country option.

  • Thanks for sharing, this is nice project you've got there!
2 minor comments, not sure if it's just me. If I added multiple radio stations, I don't seem to be able to scroll down the channel listings in favourites.
Also, there seem to be some weird "Indian" sounding advert (I think, I can't make it out what it is, something about downloading, I think…) that plays on top of the radio station at a random interval. The same advert actually plays across different channels in my test, so it's definitely externally introduced rather than radio induced.
I'm testing it on Chrome if it helps, cheers!

    • Thank you. Please try again the favourite scroll issue and confirm if its fixed. I just made a minor change and looks like its fixed.

Other problem is also being ractified. I put a random mp3 to try and overlay on existing radio station every x minutes. Purpose was to try and keep the session active especially on iphone and android phone. This is to avoid the behavious by those devices to kill the session as sound is coming from browser. If I am able to keep session active, it will help the radio to keep playing even if your screen is locked and you are listening to radio on a long ride. Whats happening now (and I am trying to fix it) is that it looses radio controller when screen is locked so you will have to unlock the screen to keep the radio playing. this is annoying so I am trying to fix it.

  • is it down?

    • Hi, I checked last night and even this morning and its working perfectly fine. Can you please let me know what error are you seeing and what device are you using?

      • my bad, looks like corporate DNS issue

        • I see. Thanks for checking

  • Excellent work!
    Thanks.

    • Thanks mate. I appreciate your feedback.

  • Cool project! suggest:
    - double-click for zoom in, maybe automatic zoom level depending on the density of stations, so you see a given number.
    - filters, e.g. with advertising, with live DJ / talk. , talk language.

What tools have you found useful?

    • Thanks for your feedback.

I will explore this nice suggestions.

  • I like the Deep zoom. I had issues with map tiles on one of my projects recently (fixed now). I prefer it to the 3D globe actually. Can the 3D globe's res be improved and zoom?

Side note.. I do wonder what criteria JV and others around here use to label projects like this AI slop spam… 🤔 Because that's what I got for trying to make people's lives easier. I'm not complaining because the majority of feedback was positive.. but don't let anyone make you feel shit about what you're doing.

Nice work man! Keep it up.

    • Thank you mate. Really appreciate it. I have limited resources to make the globe faster however I will keep improving it, especially the globe spinning speed. I agree that only few people will label AI slop to anything and everything without testing or trying it however as you said - majority will appreciate the GOOD work so I am fine with it. I think I have seen your Teachers jobs related website and its really nice.

      • Resolution not speed. The globe is pixelated especially compared to the deep zoom view.

Where did you see teacherjobs.au? On here or from somewhere else? I love hearing about it's reach. Which reminds me.. how are you monitoring your analytics (if any)? I developed my own custom analytics admin with country heat map and all but also use Google and Cloudflare.

        • I saw your website here on ozbargain. It looks good. I also have some classified sites so I have special interest in them. Good job. I think google analytics is the standard one for monitoring.

  • neither of these appear on the map for SA, but are found using search function

    91.1 tribe fm (Willunga)
    90.1 happy fm (Victor Harbour)

on desktop pc the response is snappy including the globe spinning an zooming
    .

    • Thank you for your feedback. Yes, true. I couldnt put all 55K stations on globe as it will really make it very very slow so I randomly plotted 5K stations on the globe but all 55K are searchable on search and also explorer/country option. If you like those two stations, please favourite them once and you can access them from 'Road Trip' - 4th vertical button anytime.

Can you please tell me if you are using chrome or firefox or edge on desktop? Globe spinning speed is being improved soon however for zooming, I have deep zoom button where you can go really deep (all the way to a street level) but of course, it requires lot of power so it will make it further slow. Also, if you try to spin the globe in deep zoom mode, it will be very slow so please only use deep zoom when you need and come out of it so globe spinning can happen quickly. Thanks for this great feedback.

      • "randomly plotted 5K"
is it possible to repopulate 'all' or 'most' based on zoom level?
        .

        • I think repopulating all will be very difficult and will slow down further. I will explore plotting more once someone in zoom level to see if that can work better

        • Just another suggestion. I just checked, only 100 stations out of 1.7K australian stations have coordinates available therefore even if I implement zoom plotting, it wont have proper stations mapped against location. Rather, if you go to this https://worldradio.io/?country=Australia once and favourite them once to get your preferred one available to you quickly. Please let me know you you feel about this.

      • i'm using firefox
i did exactly as suggested, spun to aus, zoomed in and then used deep zoom

        thanks for your work
        .

        • Thanks for sharing.

  • Hey, i liked this. Can you advise how to "Install it to your home screen and it behaves like an app". Either on my phone and PC?

    • Thanks mate. You can open chrome browser on your windows PC and it will have 'Install' on the right side of browser so it will create shortcut to your taskbar and you will be use it as app. For android phone and iphone, if you open the https://worldradio.io and then to to browser and there will be an arrow type button (which you use for sharing things on airdrop or whats app etc. ), click View More and 'Add to Home Screen' so it will save it on your home page as any other app so you can easily access it like any other app.

      • Thanks. Got sorted on android phone, can't work it out on PC though. Thanks

        • Great. When you are on your PC and open Chrome browser (to open world radio site), in the browser bar (on right end of browser bar), you should see install app or something to prompt to install the app on your PC. I will prepare a quick youtube video and share if you cant figure out. Thanks

          • @yourflights: All good. Completely okay to run as website on PC. Thanks.

  • Thank you guys for supporting me and providing great feedback I really appreciate it. I have completed all the feedback and suggestions from you and it's now fully functional and really nice and smooth so please check one more time And continue using it if it's helpful.
