Got an email from ING today, as did my spouse:
We're sorry
We're writing to let you know that we identified an error which meant you did not receive a promotional payment you were eligible for under one or more of our Refer a Friend promotions. We sincerely apologise for this mistake.
Here is what happened, how it impacted you, and how we’ve fixed it.
What happened
ING has run a number of Refer a Friend promotions, where both the customer making the referral and the referred friend may receive a promotional payment if the eligibility criteria are met.
As part of a recent review, we found that you were eligible to receive one or more promotional payments under our Refer a Friend promotion(s), either as the person making the referral, the referred friend, or both. Due to an error, the payment(s) were not made to you when they should have been.
…
Based on the amount of interest they are paying (5.5%) on the referral amount, this implies the referral should have been paid during 2021.
Is it just us? 5 years is quite a long time for them to figure out the error.

IRL equivalent of "bank error in your favour".
I once received a cheque in the mail from Greater Bank for some unpaid interest for a closed savings account from a year before.
I think that was probably the 2nd or 3rd time in my young life handling a check. Very novel experience depositing it and the 3 business day delay before the funds are cleared.
