Kia Cerato 2019 GT Hatchback - Remove Back Tailgate Garnish

I am from Melbourne Australia. Problem is the car, which has only done 10,000 klm in 7 years is just out of warranty. I spoke to Kia. They said it should be up for 105,000 klm service and as it is just out of warranty will not oblige.

Problem is tailgate release. 1 day it works the next day it does not. I replaced the solenoid, boot release still the same.

When I connect a scanner and go to live data it shows the little button on the back being pressed continually, so it is my belief the switch is faulty and locking out the BCM. (I did pressure clean the car a few weeks ago - perhaps water got in).

I have a replacement switch, but the problem is removing the "Garnish plate", which hold the camera and push button. On the inside, with the cover removed there are 2 x 10mm nuts and 2 plastic release points that you squeeze.

Still not the slightest bit of movement.

Can anybody PLEASE tell me how to remove this plate (I have read a heat gun and fishing line to cut the double sided tape), but it is solid as a rock cannot even get a pry tool in there. (I have a full commercial grade set.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Lol… they dont get to "oblige" or not… This is 100% covered under ACL. 10,000km in 7 years… someone would expect a part to almost last forever on a car that does about 1,400km per year.

if it is a rear bumper/tailgate/lock/switch part, dont let them pull that "you didnt get it serviced on time" bullshit… servicing on time would have ZERO to do with unless this was listed as a serviceable part.

For the amount of km you do in a year, I would sell the car. Give up the headache and hire a car for the times that you do need one.

Did/can you spray contact cleaner into the switch just in case it is residual moisture causing the issue?

    • Agree worth a try it worked for me a different issue.

Yeah umm, guessing you didn’t service it as per the guidelines? Eg every xx KM/every yy months, whichever is sooner?

They have the time limit because things perish or age - oils, belts, fluids etc even when it’s not being driven - they don’t last forever.

  • DS auto trim/badge tape is difficult to pry.

Not familiar with your particular issue but I have used picture hanging wire and /or hacksaw blade to saw through it, applying heat as you go

Wrap blade in cloth /tape at one end or you will hurt yourself

Use leather gardening gloves with picture wire

Turps can also help to dissolve the glue

  • "…..back tailgate mold…."

As oposed to the front 'tailgate' or 'front Garnish'?

    Haha, had yo do it.

Go to parts dept, copy the breakdown parts list. See how it all fits together, then reverse the order.

I have been doing this to learn new repair knowledge for decades.

    • My solution when I had a problem like this was to ask a neighbor who dismantled write-offs and sold the parts for help. I wasn't sure I could remove the parts that were required to get at the one that needed replacing without breaking something. He was pretty sure he could pull things apart without breaking anything, but putting them back together again was something new for him that he was happy to try. But it all ended happily.
