  • Anyone got one and care to share thoughts? 💦

    • Here's a photo of ours. It's 4 years old and gets some afternoon QLD sun, so it's naturally quite faded. A bit of wear on the hose where the stopper clamps onto. The spring recoil is still very strong. It struggles to get the whole hose retracted if the hose is pressurised with water (I just make sure there is no water in the hose and it then retracts fine - my other two retractable hoses don't have that issue). Comparing to the generic Hercules one we have and the Holeman, the ALDI one isn't the best. I'm actually quite impressed with the cheap Hercules one, it's not faded, it retracts really well and no wear and tear on the hose.

      • I've had 2 of the same model for about 4 years as well, also in the qld sun most of the day. I haven't had either struggle when still under pressure, they still return well. They've copped some abuse too, so have definitely been incredible value for money. Can be hit and miss with these kinda Aldi products, but this one has been a hit for us.

        • I can't remember how much I paid for the 30m Hercules one, but for it's similar age (and more heavy use), it's doing much better compared to the ALDI one.

          • @Disabled-User: Where did you purchase the Hercules one from? I can’t find anything online

    • It's good different

    • We have the 30m ALDI reel, bought for about $70 over 5 years ago, replacing a more expensive 30m reel (AquaGlide?) from Bunnings that rarely retracted completely, even when new, without a lot of back-and-forth messing about, especially with the last 10m. I was told 30m was too much hose for these home garden reels, so I wasn't expecting too much success with the ALDI replacement, but it was worth a try for the price and an easy refund.

However, the 30m ALDI reel has never failed to retract. It gets a bit slow over the last few metres when still pressurised, but I found that a squirt of water along the exposed hose 'lubricates' it for a smoother wind-in. I always hold the hose back slightly with a wet hand to stop it from free-running too fast so it winds on evenly.

It's showing signs of SA's hot summer sun on its casing, wall mount and the exposed bits of hose. I suspect the UV-affected plastic wall mount might be a failure point one day, but the reel itself is great - excellent bang for the buck - and a simple metal bracket could replace the plastic mount. I've been tempted to grab another reel to keep in reserve, but since this one is still winding up 30m perfectly, I keep putting it off :)

  • It would be interesting to see how this compares to Bunnings garden basic version at $44.90 https://www.bunnings.com.au/garden-basics-20m-retractable-ho…?

    • Aldi one stoped retracting within 3 months, returned it early this year then I bought the Bunnings one so far so good. However the Bunnings one has no info about warranty even the staff checked system still don’t know. One thing to notice is that the Bunnings one has bad chemical/plastic smell that will last a few months.

        • Maybe you missed the other comment about 2x of these lasting 4 years? Surely a double anecdote counts for even more in your mind?

    • Bought 2 of these about a year ago. Cheap plasticky, very strong rubbery smell. The price says it all

      • Yeah the Bunnings one stinks. The water coming out of it smells horrendous. I washed my hands with it after gardening and I could smell it even after washing with soap later. Avoid it.

    • Bunnings one works well, had it for half a year no problems so far, yes the water for the first few days was a bit stinky, but other than that its all good now.

      • I put one in when I sold my old house. Still stunk after 4 months. No idea if it eventually went away but I wouldn’t recommend anyone use products that are this cheap.

    • I have experience with both, the ALDI one held up much better, the Bunnings one was destroyed by UV (though it did cop more sun tbf) and the actual hose felt cheaper

Found some returns in Bunnings once for Nylex versions and got one, fixed it, put it in the shed until the ALDI one gave out. About 2 years it's been in there now and the ALDI one doesn't look like breaking any time soon

  • It works fine as long as don't have a heavy use of it.

I have three, one died after few years, as I kept pulling the hose to wash the cars.

Light use, yes. Heavy use, no.

  • Hard pass on hoses with short warranties.

    • I just looked up a quality hose on bunnings. One of them has a 20 year warranty! Considering how much of a headache hoses are, 20 years of warranty is worth it for the price. You'll probably buy 5-7 cheap hoses over 20 years

    • genuine question, whats your criteria to return it for warranty? do you keep it out of the sun too?

  • I spent $289 on a Hoselink Evolve.
Time for me to hand back my OzBargain membership card.

    • Rich man around here

      • A doctor… sure

    • how is the quality so far?

      • The retraction mechanism is a lot better than my 10-year old Classic.
Some of their plastic is still not that tough. For example, the ball stopper and the spray gun scuffs badly when they got smacked against a brick wall.

        • I'm no expert, but I think soft plastic that scratches easily is better for shock resistance. feature rather than bug?

    • You got me looking at those now, and they're $319 :(

      • Yes. Got sucked in by their sleek marketing as well.
Once they get you into their ecosystem, you can't get out.

        • I have their connectors and spray gun on my other hose already and quite like the quality, so yeah, I can't get out now :(

  • I don't really need a hose but a 60 day satisfaction guarantee might be nice.

  • i installed mine that i bought 3 years ago about 6 months ago. Spring broke within 3 months of use - I generally only use it once a week to water plants.

  • What retractable hose would people recommend?
    Hoselink?

    • I've had good experience with Hoselink - never had any frustrating leaks etc. It just works.

      • Did you get a Classic or Evolve?

        • I got a Classic (as they haven't sold Evolve on Everyday Marketplace yet). The only complaint I have is that they use proprietary connectors - I don't know how to connect their hose to our Karcher yet.
The 30m version also reduces a fair amount of water pressure - unfortunately they didn't have the 25m version when we bought it.

          • @Averell: Hoselink sell a connector Adapter kit, or you could probably get knockoffs as well

    • While I haven't tried the Hoselink hose, I have their tap / hose connections and I can honestly say it's been the ONLY brand that hasn't leaked a drop. They're outside attached to the tap as well with about 4 years in the QLD sun and still looking and performing perfectly.

  • Interested

  • Have 2 works well no issues

  • Better off with HoseLink. Made in Australia.

  • I've been considering getting a Gardena Roll Up, Hoselink Classic or Hoselink Evolve. Anyone have any advice?

    • Gardena uses standard/popular connectors. Hoselink uses proprietary ones.
I've got a Hoselink Classic - so far so good. Haven't tried Gardena.

  • Bought one last time it was on and the retractable function/spring broke within a couple months with light use. Would not recommend.

  • The self-extrnding hose on Temu is much better value than this, and better quality, especially if u get cashback

  • I bought a Hozelock Auto Reel with 20m Hose off of Amazon AU, and it lasted 4 years and 9 months. Comes with a 2 year warranty, and extended additional 3 years if you register it within 30 days of purchase. I just submitted a ticket to see if they will repair or replace it. Of course, i can't remember if i registered it after purchase (probably not). Will revert to let you know if they honour it!

Its been great for the past 4-3/4 years, up til now :)

    • How did it fail?

      • Refuses to auto-retract anymore.

  • I bought 2 of these last year on clearance for $40. The one at the back which is used more often (with the remaining water in the hose always being let out) broke a couple of months ago. I think it was one of the metal caps that keeps the metal spring retention in place (I opened it up). Hence the retraction mechanism stopped working. In fairness, I emailed the distributor and they sent me a whole new one from Germany within a few weeks. Though I don't have much faith in it lasting anyway.

  • The last one was 3 yrs warranty.
hopefully this one is 3 yrs warranty too.

You'll probably need it incase yours also get broken later

the one got one on clearance also broke the locking mechanism quite soon within 1-3 months of usage.

  • I bought one of Aldi's retractable holes 15 years ago and it's still working.
No endorsement to this current one, it looks absolutely nothing like it, I hope they make it the same way. I need one for the front yard.

    • what about the hose that we are discussing here?

  • Thanks OP
