Does amazon punish for doing S&S and then cancelling often? (like they do if you were do a lot of refunds)
I have this on S&S but outside the dea it spikes to like $40 or something really high and I'm worried about getting caught out one time by not delayingthe purchase out

I'm not sure why someone gave you a negative for that. That's right in my experience, when S&S, they don't tell you that price has been increased and if you're not paying attention, you get slapped with a purchase
yep that happened multiple times to me as well.
Where possible in Amazon sales I buy everything on subscription set to "every 6 months". Then I have 6 months to do a mass cancellation of all the subscriptions. Been doing this for years with no penalty. Generally the 6 month option is hidden in the subscription period selector - you have to scroll to it. You can also immediately do the cancellation, and even select "I just wanted the initial discount" as the reason for cancellation! But I prefer to do it in a batch later on.
Doing this for literally years
There is no obligation to remain subscribed. You can cancel anytime. Frequent returns/refunds on the other hand indicates misuse or fraud.
