  • Anyone currently a member and recommend? Would love to block Youtube ads on Android/Google TV.

    • Tiz-en tube co-bolt

      • Awesome! I found a different app called Smarttube via FDroid and installed on my TCL C655 and Chromecast HD. Works fine.

I didn't know there was a Tizen equivalent which is great since my Frame Tv needs a solution too

        • That is good, but the one I mentioned above has a native feel with sponserblock in there too.

Also for Tizen you can use the non-cobolt version. Cobolt is for Android/Google TVs. Works really well.

    • Can't remember if it blocks YouTube Ads, as I just pay for YouTube Premium for the family given how much we all use it, and since we prefer YouTube Music over Spotify anyway (I figure, our collective time is worth the 40-odd bucks between us)

      • 40 odd bucks?? R u rich, can I be part of your family

        • $40 between a family of 5 isn't so bad…

          • @itsfree: ive never asked my family to contribute to my ytprem

            • @Wiadro: well we're all adults so i think it's reasonable now ;)

    • yes, i highly recommend it. I got the same lifetime deal few years ago for $30 i think, but this is even better. I have this setup in all my devices, on iphones it only works in safari.

It does block youtube ads, but not sure about android/google tv. I know it blocks on browser.

I use the youtube premium from India for $1.50 per month lol, so that runs on my tv and phone.

      • how are you still getting your youtube premium sub?

        • I just discovered there are apps easily available to bypass YouTube ads. Bye bye paying for YouTube premium but now I'm stuck with $75 worth of Indian Rupees on my apple account.

Installed Tizentube on my Samsung tv last night and CleanTube on my phone. Smarttube via FDroid for my Google TV

          • @IlIlIl IlI llIIIl: it's weird cleantube is on google playstore, they normally nuke anything that gives you YT premium type features like no ads and playing music with the screen off. Is it actually connected to your google account?

          • @IlIlIl IlI llIIIl: will give tizentube a go thanks!

Previous google would get a couple bucks from us now they are getting $0. Sound business decision they have over there.

        • its only setting up the hardest part. I made a new account just for this and set the location there, but even though its an individual account, everyone in my household uses as one account lol.

only youtube music has 1 device streaming at a time restriction, works fine offline tho.

  • One of the best software purchases you will ever make, especially if you run Android. Couple it with the Bypass Paywalls Clean userscript and filter, and you're golden.

    • can this be installed as a custom list on adguard dns? have you got a link?

        • Userscript (add it under the Extensions section in AdGuard app)
        • Filter rules (add this under Custom Filters in AdGuard app)
  • I recommend, especially on iOS to get a fairly extensive ad block system wide works via a loopback VPN (local hosted non-IP changing).

  • highly recommended, it’s very good

  • paying for ublock is crazy

    • Paying to send your data to Russia instead of using uBlock for free is even crazier.

    • This is adguard not ublock

  • You can also set your DNS to dns.adguard.com for free ad blocking.

    • I use this DNS on all the devices at home; it is such a lifesaver and free.

    • what’s the difference between that and the post?

      • I think the app does some stuff on-device that the dns can't stop.

  • uBlock origin for Firefox on PC and Android. Stops all YT ads and websites laden with ads and pop ups.
And it's free. Search in your browser extensions.

  • I just bought it and realised that it is not blocking ads in apps like 9gag. My self-hosted adguard instance blocks those ads so not sure if this is valuable for someone who already has a self-hosted instance. maybe a backup but wanted to share my experience as I had been watching these deals and wondering

    • You need to install the HTTPS cert if you want to do that on Android

    • I don’t use 9gag. Just for the sake of testing, I downloaded it; I don’t see any ads on iOS.

      • i am on ios. i will give it another go. but still seeing ads. have the certs and active via the vpn option.

        • VPN doesn’t hide adverts, vpn is privacy.
          For ad blocking i enabled
          - dns mode
          - ad mode
          - ultimate mode (believe uses a vpn profile)
          But I didn’t enable vpn.

          • @UltimateAI: thanks! i tried the recommendation but was still seeing ads so reverted to my self hosted instance and the ads went away. might be the lists i had set. the main comparison was whether this has value over self hosting, and it appears not if you can manage the self hosted instance well. otherwise it is a good backup.

    • also not sure why i am being negged as this was shared for people who are self hosting and wondering if it makes sense to buy this as well.

  • Can Adguard defeat ads in apps on both Android and IOS?

    • IIRC it blocked ads on my iPhone too, when you enable Advanced Protection

    • I think not all apps; it used to block.

  • When you can use this: https://www.rethinkdns.com/configure

Why would you pay? Donate a little to the people giving you all of this for free.

    • Because DNS is just one of the options\features AddGuard uses to block adverts.
I have the Free Adguard DNS at hone, but also have the Family plan for devices such as iOS ect.

      • You can do the same with what i mentioned though.

        There's even nextdns

I've used adguard, but i don't see the advantages to other options which are free.

Dns level, local adblocking, simple adnauseum, then something more sophisticated like Fauxx.

        • It’s not just DNS based it installs as an app with extensions for browsers like safari. So works a lot better than dns.
$16~ for 9 devices, take it or leave it. I was just answering your question, why pay. My family who already have the dns solution, this has been good and worth the money.

          • @UltimateAI: I know it's not just DNS based.

I'm saying, based on what it is and what they offer, versus everything else you could use for free, I don't see it as a deal.

            • @Oofy Doofy: Fair point if you can point to an equivalent FREE service that provides the same level of functionality, particularly iOS.
The DNS based service you quoted is FAR from a comparison, does not include the applications or extensions and is limited to blocking ads that can be blocked via DNS.

              • @UltimateAI: The extension side of things is more for cosmetics and control. There are free options for the same functionality as Adguard anyway.

If you have an android phone, rethinkdns app is there.

                • @Oofy Doofy: I said iOS..:) And cosmetics (reducing visible ads is the entire intent), as mentioned massive difference with Safari between DNS solutions and the App based solution.

  • Thanks op

  • Highly recommend. I honestly forget how terrible it is to use some websites and apps without this installed until I use someone else's phone that doesn't have it.

  • brave browser…

  • Does this affect Cashback tracking?

    • It shouldn't but it's safest to turn it off first.

I've forgotten to turn it off a few times with AliExpress and it still tracked but YMMV

All the cashback posts here say to turn adblocks and the like off

      • Thanks!

    • For me it does, but i just temporarily turn it off when checking out and turn it back on afterwards

      • Thanks for that

  • Blokada 5 is free and open source. Any reasons to pay for a service?

  • TAKE20 discount for 20% off- brings it down to $8.80 USD

  • Use TAKE20 to get 20% off, switch country to Christmas Island to avoid GST, paid A$12.67 via Macquarie debit card, thanks op.

  • So this is for the AdGuard ad blocker not the AdGuard dns right? As I use the AdGuard dns and it works well but my quota of blocking runs out mid month. It resets at the start of the month but want to get the dns with a much bigger quota of blocks for the month.
