An incredible ATL on the Matter variant ($19.50 each) for Meross's super mini Smart Plugs! After the last deal was a hit for for those looking for a matter variety these are a fantastic plug.

I've been running these for a over a year now and they've been brilliant. I've integrated them into HA to automate room heaters, car charging, turn on and off some non-smart lamps for security when I'm away on holidays. Super solid on wifi (setup a static IP if you can) so far and haven't had any issues with connectivity or setup.

A few uses from last time:

  • Lights - automate lights around the home/garden, turn them off before bed or turn them on when you're on holidays

  • Pool pump – Schedule it to run during solar generation or cheaper periods, while monitoring how much it costs

  • Dishwasher/Washing machine - See when the cycle is finished if the energy usage goes to 0W after a cycle (get a notification with Home Assistant)

  • Electric blanket – Turn it on before bed and automatically switch it off after a set period

  • Fridge - Check energy usage over time and if there is a failure (electricity goes to 0W)

  • Are these subject to the dreaded "clicks" after being used on heavy appliances for a while like the Kasa/Tapos do ?

    • I've personally found these pretty reliable with some space heaters I've been running at home (around 2000W). What kind of loads are you talking about?

      • One failed on a fridge and the other one on a micro-wave oven.

        • Sorry to hear that, was this the old bulky unit or the new slim unit? Did you try a return through Amazon?

          • @JSONBourne: They are the KP115 type. They were repairable by replacing the bulging capacitor. So far, they are holding but I use them mainly only on resistive devices now, like lamps and kettles. Although I have another one on a small fan and it's surviving well. Touch wood.

    • I have been using one of the non-matter versions with an EV charger for 6 months and have pushed over 600kW through it in that time.
It pulls the full 10A (drawing 2.2-2.3kW from the wall) and have not had an issue.
It runs continuously for hours at a time and is so much easier to programme (and rely on the programming actually working) than using the EV's in-built scheduling options.

The only downside is that my wiring is capable of taking 15A, but the Meross is a 10A device. Running my adjustable EV charger at a lower setting is a small price to pay for the convenience.
I did try running the charger at 13A just to see what would happen and the Meross simply turned itself off. After setting the charger back to 10A and restarting the Meross, it has worked flawlessly since then.

      • 600kWh, the 'h' is really important, unless you've managed to power a large office building through the smart plug.

        • Thanks - I got it right in my other comment below :-)

          • @clintdb: Damn, I was hoping you'd come back and show you'd discovered these are some amazing mystical power source. Oh well, better go and pay my leccy bill I suppose.

    • I would never use one of these cheap sockets for heavy appliances. If you need the kind of control, get a real smart relay like a Shelly. I don't want the fire risk. (maybe occasional vacuum cleaner would be fine)

A 1000W heater is borderline. 2000W too much. The main issue with heavy appliances is the big AC motors, that can cause momentary 3000W or more loads.

      • Can you explain why the Shelly relay would be better than the IOT relays in the Meross?

I had a look at some teardowns and the Meross actually looks good with dual relays to isolate both the active and neutral lines instead of just the single relays in most other devices Ive seen.

  • Great little energy monitor smart plugs; I have a bunch of these around the house for about a year now and have not skipped a beat.

Integrates well in Home Assistant. Latest HomeKit allows you to view the real-time energy draw, no historical data though.

    • I have these connected to HA through Matter integration. Works well, only issue is whenever there’s a power outage the Total Energy Used resets to zero, stuffing up the energy stats.

  • Do I need to use a dedicated app for controlling this?

Or simply supported at Google Home?

    • Because they're matter they work with any eco-system. They can work with Google Home/HomeKit/SmartThings etc which is what's so great about them.

So yes you can control with Google Home. I'm an Apple household but here's some instructions.

      • Very noice. Thanks OP

    • They have the Meross app, if you don’t know of or need matter there’s a cheaper model without it (about $45 for 4 on sales)

They still work with Google / Alexa / etc, but aren’t a standard API like matter so you can’t do much fancy custom coding or link them into other non Meross devices (ie have them turn on when another matter device sends a callback)

  • Silly question, will this be too bulky to cover the power switch? I have found some other smart plugs are very annoying cause they kid if press on the power switch

    • The switch for this one is on the side, so it's accessible if that's what you mean. You could cover it with some electrical tape to block it?

  • Personally would avoid these, i bought them and the presence detector, all did not work well within HA. I returned to amazon and went with simple Zigbee versions not Matter.

    • Did you have another router in the mix or did you setup OpenRouter on HA for it to go direct? I have both Presence Sensor and the plugs and it just depends on how you setup your HA.

    • These seem to work ok in HA for me. These are just wifi and not thread based.

  • Are the Ikea GRILLPLATS Matter smart plugs not better at $13 if you don't mind the size?

    • Came here to say that

    • wondering the same,
might be worth to ppl without a hub and prefer Meross app?

    • I can't speak for this plug but I would wonder how it goes with sustained high wattage loads at that price point. Also I believe these are Thread based and not Wifi so you will need a Thread hub?

      • Yeah, however, that is an advantage if you have other thread based devices as mains powered devices will help improve the mesh for your battery powered thread devices.

        • Yep that's fair. Just a different use-case that's all and for those getting into it Thread is a bit less plug and play if you don't have a hub.

      • matter over wifi, not thread

    • TBH They are both in the same product category. Though personally from what I've seen, I'd trust the Ikea a little more.

  • How is this an ATL when it's currently $60.19 at AliExpress, and has been cheaper in the past?

    • ATL on Amazon, which some people prefer for peace of mind for returns. It's the same product I guess if you want to purchase from AliExpress?

      • That's understandable, $17 more for Amazon support is worth it. Though I would say if you can get it on a sale at ~$50 for a 4 pack I'd probably lean that way.

    • Ooo good to kn ow

  • Can they be controlled totally offline by HA with zero access to the internet, no mobile app, etc?

    • Yes they can since they're matter. Mine are internet blocked as a result.

      • But since they're Matter, they do require a Matter / Thread router which most of them still require an active internet connection (I have SmartThings gateway), unless I'm getting something wrong.
Do these offer any sort of API for direct control?

        • Not necessarily. The Router internet connection is just if you want to control them away from home, and it's the router that would have the connection in that case.

At the end of the day if you want full internet firewall then you won't be able to control them away from home if you also block your router. But you can happily block the plugs and leave your trusted router (re: HomeAssistant) connected. I connect to my HA instance via Tailscale and it's great.

          • @JSONBourne: Thanks. I'm double checking as I need a true offline total control of the smart plug.
The problem I'm trying to resolve is that my NBN NTD sometimes loses connection and the only way to restore internet at home is to power-cycle it. Once it's down there's no internet at all.
My idea was to setup a routine in HA or so to control the internet connection (ping) and if it's gone to send the power-cycle command to the smart plug to which the NBN NTD would be connected. If the smart plug relies even on a microsecond internet connection, then the whole automation will obviously not work.
Shelly would be ideal but they don't sell any smart plugs in Australia.

            • @krisp: If you're using HA then it would be all local only behind the NTD. So you could easily set this up.

              • @JSONBourne: Would you still recommend SmartThings hub or maybe better Hubitat since this hub is totally local? Hubitat though does not have a Thread router (but supports Matter). I'm so confused by that whole Matter/Thread mess.

          • @JSONBourne: So just to be 100% clear, can I buy these and just use them without any other hardware or HA using the Meros app?

  • For all the IoT techies out there: Which chipset do these Meross plugs and garage door openers use? Are there any security or privacy concerns?

    • Older Meross devices like the MSG100 generally use MediaTek MT7682 chips, while newer Matter plugs like the MSS315 use Realtek RTL8720CM. I’d still keep them on an isolated IoT VLAN and block access to the trusted LAN. The newer Matter models are preferable since they can operate locally with less cloud dependence.

      • @froddoog very helpful insight. Thanks heaps!

  • Need deal on tapo matter

  • nitpicking here but don't electric blankets require a timed shut off to be sold here?

    • Some do but have weird timeouts at 12hrs. So you can use these to turn them off a bit sooner.

  • car charging as in EV charging? surely these aren't suitable for drawing high currents for sustained periods…

    • See my reply to another comment above (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/17934561/redir).
Have been using a non-matter version of this Meross plug for 6 months and over 600kWh with no issues at all.

      • Hmm be careful. I did this, albeit with a completely different smart plug, for 2 years before I noticed burn marks on the plastic.

I immediately got a sparky to install a dedicated 15amp outlet after that, too scared to try using smart plugs again

        • For added context my EV was made in 2011 and is somewhat of a "dumb" EV; can't schedule charging from the car

        • Thanks for your insight.
I have been keeping a loose eye on it to check how it is going, but will maybe check on it a bit more often.

  • The ikea matter plug is cheaper. Is meross better at anything?

    • The IKEA plug uses Matter over Thread rather than Matter over Wifi. So you'd need an existing Thread network to run it.

      • Ah I did not see that thank you

I actually prefer thread but still if they do the same thing then I will stick to Ikea for now

  • These are Matter over WiFi smart plugs. Do Meross have any Matter over Thread smart plugs?

    • Been asking myself same question and after some searching, my conclusion is 'no'. Happy to be put right if someone can find Matter over Thread.

  • Bout 4 meross monitors (think the fatter version) and 2 have died. Just on normal appliances. Somethings rattling in them. The functionality is good, but reliability is suspect.

    • Just to check were these the older bulkier units? They had a capacitor issue due to a dodgy supplier but the new slim units are a redesign and shouldn’t have that issue.

      • Yeah the older ones. Damn, shoulda tried to get a refund if known issue.

  • Been using one of these on my pool pump all year. It's great. From anywhere, I can set the winter and summer runtimes to catch peak solar times and cheap night electricity rates, or run it for some extra time if needed. The pump is far from my wifi points and picks up only a weak signal, but nothing has ever gone wrong.

  • Can one fit in a double power point with an ordinary device next to it? My old meross are bloaty

    • Yep, and can even fit 2 side by side.

  • One of these is behind a powerstrip for my gaming PC, and another was for a power strip for my two servers. The latter had a far lower power draw, but would always intermittently drop off my network every few weeks. It now drops off every few hours, so I've left it unplugged.

I might try out the Tap Matter smart plugs next, not brave enough to give these another go. I think my current ones are only a year old.
