Intel lunar lake ultra 7 258v + 32GB + 512 GB, not a bad deal considering the RAM / SSD price these days.

Lunar lake 258V is comparable to Ryzen Z2e, which is much more powerful than a Z2A as found in most handheld gaming PCs under $1000.

Not ATL (was $899.99 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/967025), but anything hardly gets any cheaper these days with those AI companies eating up all resources.

Cons:

  • Battery is only 54.5 Wh.
  • SteamOS doesn't run well on Intel CPUs
  • Not premium build quality

  • Wish we could rip this apart for parts

    • What's stopping you?

      • I assume ram and at least cpu would be soldered.

        • You can still rip them out.

          • @Tacooo: Bummer, the SteamDeck 2 just leaked.

Suspected 2028 release, USD $1000 price (AUD $1,500)
            16GB RAM, 512GB storage
            12-CU RDNA- 3.5
            8-core Zen4 (4+4c)
            3nm-TSMC (instead of 5nm)
            OLED, 90Hz, 1080p screen
Equal battery life (3-hours mixed performance, 1-hour max performance, 6-hours low power)
About x2 performance of the PS4/SteamDeck/Switch-2, or roughly equal to PS4 Pro/Xbox Ally X/XSS depending on the Optimisation, or roughly 60% slower than the 2027 PS5 Portable, or about x8 slower than the upcoming XB6 Helix Home Console

            • @Kangal: Wow, 2028! Definitely worth waiting for it.

    • We don't live in a modular economy - imagine beefing up the Switch 2 with interchangeable parts across devices and… ☝️running multiple OSes, sadly more than a pipe dream. Even custom low-high spec configurations are distant ideas.

      • As much as you think that's what everyone wants, it's not. Modular hardware outside of desktops is a niche. Just take a look at framework.

Switch 2 wouldn't be where it is if it was modular. Switch 2 is good because it's proprietary, one hardware with everything optimused for it.

The top of the range apus from Intel and amd already have issues maintaining temps on devices engineered for them, you really want to slap that on a switch 2 device that was made to run cooler apus? Let alone the jankiness and convuluted workarounds when running multiple OS' on a device.

Support is key, too much variables and support suffers. Poor mother of 3 is left learning how to create an image onto a usb key just so her kid can have a switch running on steam OS.

        • I admit, the industry isn't ready for interchangeable parts across handheld gaming devices simply because there are no agreeable standards - we've seen this before with PCs in the early days.

Your also drawing conclusions that don't align with what I've suggested. For eg. memory, storage and battery increases could all be upgradable (modular) for the switch 2. The OG and lite switch variants are a live case here. We could see a switch 2 pro release later with 16GB of memory and a faster GPU.

I'm not asking for leaps and bounds here.

As for OSes, it's not that hard implementing a boot protocol to switch between 2 or 3 on the same device pre installed!

          • @cobknob: Your dream device already exists in the windows space. Go install an emulator if you want Nintendo's proprietary ecosystem.

Nintendo released the lite to refresh the line and to provide a cheaper alternative to the full sized model. You can't get the switch lite that cheap/small if it shared the same backbone as the regular switch.

You don't need to upgrade when it's a closed ecosystem, everything is designed for that hardware. And yes there will be a switch 2 pro, because that's Nintendo's $$$ model. Just like re-releasing the same game over 3-4 consoles.

What benefit is a boot manager on a switch? You gonna run Windows on an arm chip and have an absolutely shit time? You want the CPU to be modular aswell so you put a Z2e?

You think Nintendo is gonna be happy when everyone is complaining linux/Windows is hot garbage on the switch hardware when it wasn't supported in the first place? They already send cease and decist letters when someone makes an honest review on youtube about their games.

            • @krisspy:

You don't need to upgrade when it's a closed ecosystem, everything is designed for that hardware. And yes there will be a switch 2 pro, because that's Nintendo's $$$ model. Just like re-releasing the same game over 3-4 consoles.

What planet you living on? of course you gotta upgrade hardware! Have you played BOTW or TOTK on the Switch OG, OLED and Switch 2? There are significant differences especially between 1 and 2. - handheld or dock modes. The first had frame rate issues with several popular titles and even though that's no where near as common on the switch 2, there are still titles that challenge that system.

Both the first and second switch utilise a unified memory architecture which means the system RAM is shared between the CPU and GPU. - 16GB memory would have been superior in every sense of the word except cost. And that's the biggest issue, when manufacturing a console how much someone is willing to pay. There's a reasonable price point and then there's how the fu#$ can I buy that now.

What benefit is a boot manager on a switch? You gonna run Windows on an arm chip and have an absolutely shit time?

Your thinking is very obtuse. I don't want windows 😆 on the switch and tbh who the fu#$ would. I also don't want a boot manager in the sense that you maybe referring to, that could be managed by anyone. Like you mentioned earlier most consumers don't want to fiddle around - playing games is what they want to do! An option to have for eg. Steam OS and the Switch OS on the same console.

You want the CPU to be modular aswell so you put a Z2e?

The biggest issue like I mentioned before is standards and that trickles down to component sizing. Desktop vs Laptop memory have different dimensions, and the Switch is just very compact and what we need is smaller components. I don't believe we are quite ready for extra-small-form-factor!

You think Nintendo is gonna be happy when everyone is complaining linux/Windows is hot garbage on the switch hardware when it wasn't supported in the first place? They already send cease and decist letters when someone makes an honest review on youtube about their games.

Once again your proving my point about how you think and approach this idea - down the straight and narrow, Nintendo don't play by that saying. They go around the bend! ☝️

              • @cobknob: You live in some lala land where you think companies want to give absolutely everything to customers.

Modulary makes things more compllicated it will impact the size, out of the box performance and price of the unit. Guess what made the switch really popular?

You don't seem to know how things work and probly just some old guy living in lala land so let me ask you this.
What architecture do you think steam OS runs on? And what architecture is switch running on?
Who's gonna provide support when things don't work with steam OS specially when it's gonna be emulated?
Why would Nintendo add steam OS to the device when its of no benefit or interest to them?
Do you know about Homebrewing on the OG switch and Nintendo's stance on pirating?
Why do you think Nintendo works so hard on securing their bootloader so others can't install their own OS on it? You think they would just open the floodgates just so just so consumers have the choice?

                • @krisspy:

You live in some lala land where you think companies want to give absolutely everything to customers.

I'm not asking for everything, but more memory and a larger battery would be a start. Even if I have to pre order a specific console version that costs 100-150$ more.

Modulary makes things more compllicated it will impact the size, out of the box performance and price of the unit.

That's not entirely factual. Laptops for years had the option to change out memory and storage with small plastic covers to remove for either. Now you have to remove the entire underside cover to add or replace memory/storage if you can at all. They do this to rig the system so people buy new laptops more frequently.

Guess what made the switch really popular?

They make great software and games. Like any console, exclusivity also contributes to success, IP, etc.

You don't seem to know how things work and probly just some old guy living in lala land

😆 I am in IT - I have reasonable grasp on how things work. I certainly don't claim to know everything.

What architecture do you think steam OS runs on? And what architecture is switch running on?

                  X86-64 vs ARM64

Who's gonna provide support when things don't work with steam OS specially when it's gonna be emulated?

Cookie Monster 🤷 - have you tried switching it off and on again?

Why would Nintendo add steam OS to the device when its of no benefit or interest to them?

They might acquire or merge 🙉🙄 with Steam. Who knows.

Do you know about Homebrewing on the OG switch and Nintendo's stance on pirating?

Home brewing on the Switch - vaguely. They protect their IP!

Why do you think Nintendo works so hard on securing their bootloader so others can't install their own OS on it? You think they would just open the floodgates just so just so consumers have the choice?

Of course not. I've read aplenty in the community about jury-rigging a switch with Linux, Steam OS, the OS though shall not be name 📛

            • @krisspy:

You can't get the switch lite that cheap/small if it shared the same backbone as the regular switch.

I'll reply to that with a quote off search

Both consoles use the same custom NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor and 4GB of RAM, meaning games run at identical performance levels (framerates and loading times) when played in handheld mode. The Lite does not sacrifice processing power for its smaller size.

              • @cobknob: Why didn't they just make the OG switch as small as the lite version to begin with then? Why is it much bigger.

      • Pipe dream lol, if that was possible knobheads like you would drive the price of all of these consoles to $1000-2000 or even more

        • I'm not suggesting a completely modular system. Expandable memory, storage, and battery are great starting points. Some people are happy to pay more for extra memory to have games running at a higher resolution and frame rate.

          • @cobknob: sure that is fine, but if you allow people to get a steam deck and use it for parts to build something else, market would be even crazier than it is now.

  • I have the steamdeck and this is slightly tempting if SteamOS gets better on it.

    • I still think the Steam Deck will last longer.

    • I don't know how this one is, but FWIW I have the original Claw dual booting CachyOS and Windows, and the issues both Cachy and Bazzite have with it have been there since forever, so might be Intel-driver-related… I have pretty much given up on waiting for a fix.

The only real problems are 1) Not being able to control the TDP and 2) Not restoring wifi after sleep/hibernate (needs a full reboot). It's enough for me to use Windows more often, as Throttlestop makes the battery last longer than it does on Linux…….. that is when you're not awarded 1 hour of background windows updates upon boot.

    • Dont bother waiting for a SteamOS support for intel… Even the 8 AI+ is still glitchy on SteamOS.

  • 55wh battery is pretty dreadful. In saying that Xess looks a lot nicer than fsr so in theory you can push the same amounts of frames as a Ryzen chip using a lower tdp.

If Linux support is a must bazzite works well enough with this device with a small performance tax due to more immature drivers.

Solid deal imo, 32gb ram is awesome given the memory is shared between iGPU and CPU

    • Doing some digging on reddit looks like there is 30-50% performance tax on Linux compared to windows, might be worth skipping if you really want steamOS like experience

If you really hate windows I would go for a z1e/z2e alternative Iike Xbox ally x /ally x or legion go s. For a new device this is a solid deal tho imo

      • If you want SteamOS like experience just set Steam to auto start with the machine in big picture mode, they updated it awhile ago to use the steam deck style UI

      • linux and these ultra Intel and the XESS arent great driver wise and power management

    • Window's Debloat is your friend. I know it is still not bazzite/steamOS but it helps.

  • Lucky it's not a thousand.

  • Can't you just put Windows on this to run Wintel games?

    • Basically this is a PC. I am using the previous gen of this as a desktop.
All you need is just a good usb dock station.

      • Running Windows? What's that like? Can you play games on it while docked, and what's the performance like?

        • I can play expedition 33, Re3, doom enternal.cyberpunk. battery not great but on docked, no need to worry.

        • i have the OEM dock for the A1M (previous version) and its docked to my TV. It works well as an emulation machine and had been playing FH6 on it without issue. You can connect any bluetooth controller you have. It really excells as a indie game monster. I have been getting through a lot of my steam/gog pile of shame with it on the commute ect.

This one in the deal would be that much more powerful - the battery is small so probs get 2-4 hours of gameplay depending on the title and setting ect.

I can say that when comparing my A1M claw to my bothers oled steamdeck the performance on the A1M is that bit better but the steamdeck functionality (touchpads) do give it an edge.

          • @deebee8: I also have the older A1M, and found it surprisingly capable. Mine also sits connected to my TV most of the time (HDMI cable, charger, bluetooth controller). The only other time I use it is during long flights, which if you take a 45W charger with you, gives you infinite hours.

I still hate Windows Update and all the crapload of background services, but it does add versatility… With a bluetooth KB+M, it works as a WFH laptop in a pinch, and you also get gamepass, which SteamOS doesn't have.

            • @v8o: I've been thinking about it. Sell off my old ThinkPad which sits docked anyway and replace it with a gaming handheld that can actually play things.

Then again, I use Game Pass' streaming to play games on my ThinkPad anyway.

              I'll do some coin flipping.

              • @BadGiraffe: Yep, if I want to play something super demanding from the couch then I just use sunshine/moonlight to stream from my desktop. If you're happy with streaming and don't see yourself using this thing during a commute/flight/etc. then it may not be worth getting.

                • @v8o: Definitely going to use it for travelling. Probably not on the daily commute… unless I see other people doing it… but definitely when I go interstate or overseas.

    • seems like it runs windows 11 native. has thunderbolt 4, so you could get a dock and run it as a miniPC. to find an equivalent miniPC with similar specs about 1.4k for a Asus NUC or about $1.5k ish for a laptop

would be an absolute beast of a miniPC.

      • It has everything a mini PC has except a couple LAN ports. I guess that's solved with a thunderbolt/USB4 dock

  • The clawwww!

    • toy story or get smart reference?

      • I was thinking toy story. Just looked up the get smart reference "the craw" and it hasn't aged well, it's mostly just racist, offensive and inaccurate.

        • I was in a bottle shop buying some alcohol and the Asian lady asked if 'I was eating'. I was chewing gum at the time and had not idea what she why she was asking this. Took me a few moments to realise what she was asking. If I am 18?.
Iam from an Asian background as well.

          • @godofpizza: Haha. Accents are the spice of life! It is confusing for everyone when our brains expect something different being asked. Often if I think "wow, that was a really weird question" I've just heard wrong and I ask again what they said.

      • I was thinking Liar Liar.

        • hah, same!. ..nothing can stop the.. CLAWWWWWW.

        • Oh yeah. That's a good one too!

  • Slightly off topic, but on the topic of gaming handhelds, has anyone looked at the price of the new Xbox Ally X 20? It’s selling for $1300 USD ($1866 AUD) in the US vs $2499 (AUD) here in Australia.

    • Business as usual

    • Holy moly. Hopefully the that's the price when you buy 20. That's crazy.

    • Well that's just inflation. The US has got inflation under control thanks to Executive Orders, while here we are struggling under the RBA. /s
Alternatively, that's tarifs doing their job, resulting in US citizens paying lower prices while those outside the US pay more. /s

  • I bought one of these in the last sale and returned it after 2 weeks. It had all sorts of driver issues that resulted in almost every game I wanted to play crashing. Despite being 'just a PC', it had loads of difficulty running older games (like Just Cause 4, Forza Horizons, any Far Cry games)

    • How long ago was the last sale? Driver updates may have come a long way since release but if the last sale was a few months ago, then yeah thats concerning.

      • It was in July this year

    • That's interesting… did you do any troubleshooting ect? the community and the driver updates since release have been amaing, unlocking serious performance.

      • It just felt like I had to troubleshoot every game, which wasn't what I paid for. Fixes like manually blocking Internet access so certain games could launch. Too much hassle.

    • mine runs fine, you may have got a dodgy one

    • Intel drivers are not tied to manufacturers like Lenovo Legion with their AMD drivers.

So you can always download directly from Intel.

When installing them, always tick the clean installation option. I got into so many issues (on 8 Ai+) and the clean driver installation fixed it for me.

  • I’m wondering whether anyone has tried running Omarchy / Arch Linux and local LLMs on this handheld.

    • I'm hearing more about Omarchy these days. I've recently been converted to Fedora thanks to Bazzite. I've got an old gaming desktop running Bazzite. Been happy with it.

  • What counts as a "bargain" for computer hardware has changed somewhat

  • If anyone picks one up, this is great: https://github.com/enterTheVoidCode/ClawTweaks

ROG Ally cases also fit the unit (I have this one but there are others: https://www.amazon.com.au/tomtoc-Protective-Compatible-Acces…)

  • I have a Asus ROG ally z1e, with a 2tb hdd. Would this be an upgrade, if I sell the old ROG ally and put the 2tb hdd in this one

    • Wouldn’t be huge, maybe a greater increase at lower wattages

      • So you reckon not worth it?

        • the extra ram might future proof it the extra fps might give it a bit more life bigger battery is nice but I'm finding myself stuck plugged in on mine

the 2tb is very nice only half through mine

I am finding it is easier for me to steam stream games that don't run well on my rog ally z1e

some are OK but yeah the device hardware is limited so everything helps

personally I can't find the energy or time to set it all up again with the signing in and etc not worth it for me

          • @AlienC: Thanks for the detailed response. I got two kids and the thought of having to reconfigure everything kinda puts me off.

            • @i3cl: Yeah the first time was a pain personally for me but I'm pretty over setting stuff up from scratch.

I mean it just means losing one day most likely a weekend but yeah resetting everything from zero is not how I want to spend my future weekends personally.

Hope you figure out what you want to do these Handhelds are pretty amazing but they feel a bit still low powered for the moment.

              • @AlienC: Yeah. I might just stick with my Asus, plus I got a switch 2 which is pretty easy to pick up and play

    • Need intel g3 extreme to see a real difference.

    • Actually huge and more efficient too. I came from Legion Z1E to Claw 8 Ai+.

  • Anyone reckon it would get to Perth before next Friday?

I don't have experience with Costco shipping, I know other electronics stores will sell stuff they don't have immediate stock on hand for without telling you…………..

    Ships express post?

  • loving the hand-held space Rn it's not fully there yet but it's pretty good and close

I'm enjoying medium to low spec games on mine then steam streaming everything else that either won't work or is too high end

wardogs via steam streaming works surprisingly well

  • For $1k is a steal. I paid almost double not that long ago for the same hardware, but in laptop formfactors and I thought it was a good deal. It was what I needed at least.

Anyway a lot of comments about linux os's and stuff. I own an Rog Ally Z1E, I tried, bazzite and it was good. But after about 6 months of playing with it, I ended up back in windows, but this time with Xbox full screen experience, and I'd say anyone who's on the fence who hasn't tried it ABSOULTELY SHOULD!!!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the save state / resume from the power button on bazzite, but I have to say, I got frustrated with some 'simple' things I just take for granted after 30 years of windows… Like recording a video and setting up a file share, some settings and shortcuts. I'm sure if i persisted i'd manage, but it was taking too much time to do those things. Xbox FSE on windows is actually underrated.

    • you arent allowed to play on Windows in the internet anymore, everyone must switch to Linux because reddit told us so.

      • I know you are joking but I was hesitant to change from w11 to Linux.. took the risk and changed to bazzite. It works so much better in all aspects.. I was actually shocked.

        • I dont face any issues with Windows no crashes no slowness and my system is old, from like 2020 so i have no interest in that

and also use Nvidia, def not doing it with them

          • @Freestyle: I'm running a 13600kf with a 3070. Not trying to sell Linux to you as I'm not interested in promoting but just saying that I think there's a reason why it's being praised. I used to have PC wake issues on my lg tv with windows. On Linux it has been faultless. Quality of life is much better for me personally

            • @maverickjohn: do you really think that many people made the switch to Linux and finds windows as unusable as some of these people online claim?

No one I know complains about windows as much as I see online, some of these “rumours” even made me hesitate to upgrade to win11 and lo and behold no issues

I even switched my system from Intel to AMD without a reinstall and works fine

              • @Freestyle: Can't say as I'm not in their shoes but I can only speak from my personal experiences.
Like I said I'm not here trying to sell you Linux. I'm just saying I can understand why it's getting praise.
If windows works for you then just stick with it.

    • Xbox FSE is so underrated for handhelds with 16gb's. FSE allowed me to configure my Zotac Zone with 6gb of vram and actually allow me to play some games that performed like hot garbage without FSE enabled like Watch Dogs 2.

      • yeah, it's pretty great, but I also just appreciate the UI and shortcuts tbh… like the window switching stuff is like heaven compared to play night/steam big picture.

  • Two months ago, I sold my SD OLED because I didn’t play it much, mainly because I couldn’t live with the low screen resolution. Surprisingly, it still held its value really well, and I managed to sell it for $950.

Recently, I picked up a Legion Go S for $500 from Lenovo Outlet. The build quality doesn’t feel as solid as the SD OLED, but I really like the 8-inch screen, and SteamOS runs really well on it. For $500, I think it’s a pretty decent choice.
