About The Latest Interest Rate Increase

Consumers are still being blamed for inflation, and have to carry the load for it.
Just straight out bullsh*t from politicians of all parties who know nothing.
.

First, The government borrows much more that its capacity and incurs huge interest bills.
The only way they see to reduce their debt is to devalue the currency, and the only way to do that is Inflation.
In addition to that, it distorts the labour market to build whatever projects they see as vote winners, by paying egregious wages to not only drag people from the normal economy, but set off a competing wage demand cycle.
Then there's the banks.
Would not Govt or Reserve Bank enforcement of reduction of LVR's on home loans, even credit cards limits, slow down the construction industry without sacrificing existing borrowers.
Wouldn't actions like these slow down the money supply without inflation?
Or does the Reserve Bank not have to power to do anything except the same thing they have always done?
In which case what is the point of them?

      @jv

  • 95% of imports go to Sydney and Melbourne to live, thankfully.
    Assimilation is working well lol

  • The solution is targeted taxation (at the higher brackets/those with large disposable income). This was kind of down with the super changes and CGT changes. Such changes are needed, but are electoral suicide (perceived or otherwise). for the one competent party we have, the alternative ATM is to let the right wing populists convince the masses that further economic self harm is the way to go such that they crash and burn (electoral suicide) thus allowing the one competent government back into power.

    • There's a competent party? Why have we never elected them into power?

      • Well look at who you keep voting for.

      • Maybe you're from a different country? I certainly elected them into power last time around and I'll so it next time around as well.

    • Not the solution. Has been proven in both thery and reality not to work as well as the top brackets already carrying a disproportionately large portion of the tax burden.

I still believe the mistake was made after the Henry Review but here we all are, decades later….

      • I has responded to this but it didn't send. This is a reminder for me to reply again once I get off work

    • The competent government only reached 2nd place in the interest rate rankings but couldnt get to first place, if they were competent they would have beaten rank 1 who is iceland at 8%

But I do agree that the government should use the Joe Hockey approach and "get a good job that pays good money"… aka make more money

    • well it appears to be working the other way.

  • Yes

    • Unlessssss?

      • Tax Wealth, not Work

        • For most people, wealth is just stored work.

          • @tenpercent: And those people have fewer Wealth, than those who can afford to hoard it and increase it exponentially.

Wealth begets wealth, those who have it: more will be given, and those who lack it, will lose even more. Vicious cycle.

  • #AlboInflation

    • When did Albo cut off the world's oil supply and instruct Coles/Woolworths to price gouge?

      • He didn't yet do anything about the colossal NDIS waste/rort program or the immigration crisis, which are both highly inflationary, the latter being a significant factor in the housing crisis.

      • When did Albo cut off the world's oil supply

That's just one component of inflation…

Much of it is due to government spending and other inflationary policies such as high immigration.

        • What government spending should be cut? Tax benefits for the mining sector?

      • Incase you forgot the first 3 rate rises was before the war

    • Albo derangement syndrome?

      • Nah, just facts…

      • Albo Sycophant Syndrome?

    • Leave Allahbanese out of this.
He is too busy being an international statesman, leading 149 countries we have never heard of

      • It's almost like the prime minister is the figure head of the nation. seeing as we're extremely export driven, I would say making our world standing higher brings massive ROIs.

      • This made me chuckle 😂

      • Yes, instead he should stay in Australia and head up multiple government portfolios, preferably without telling anybody.

    • Can’t you spell WAR. If you’ve watched any recent Jiminterview he will say war about 62 times a minute
