    • Get the colour kindle so you can have colour book covers as the screen saver.

      • wait for generation 2, the reviews on the colorsoft aren't fantastic

      • text not as sharp on the colour version, tried it

        • Not as sharp, but still good. Have the colour one and very happy with it.

One of my local JB’s has them both side by side near the laptops, and I assume others do also. Worth a look if anyone wants to see the difference.

          • @Smigit: Ordered the colorsoft last night. Looking forward to trying it out, coming from 11th gen paperwhite. Probably a bit gimmicky but decent price with cashback.

            • @ozstig: Hope you enjoy it. I have no regrets spending the bit extra for one.

It’s my first kindle so while I could visually see a difference in store, I haven’t lived with a paper white and gotten used to the display for it to bias my ongoing use. Still looks like ink on paper to me, which isn’t always perfectly crisp anyway.

    • E-ink is much more pleasant to read off

      • Sure, but then you need to carry 2 devices.

        • buy $1 book at op shop and carry zero devices

          • @OZKap: I literally need my phone to access my work laptop + countless other services. A physical book will always be a +1.

          • @OZKap: Pure luxury. Libraries exist still.

      • oled are effectively shooting light up into your eyes. e ink is so much better on your eyes, and way better before bed.

        • And the battery lasts weeks, not hours.

    • I lack the dopamine to just read it off the phone

    • Really pleasant size and screen (e-ink) to read off. Great battery life. Lightweight.

But once and enjoy it for years!

      • I have this and find the 7 inch screen too large to hold comfortably, even though I have big hands. Wish I had bought the 6 inch kindle.

    • Depends how much you read. Couple books a year? I’d say iPhone or iPad is fine. Reading multiple times a week? I’d say it is an excellent purchase. It is a much much better experience than reading off the iPhone or iPad. Trust me, I read 20+ books on my iPad in a year, moved to a paperwhite and was kicking myself for not moving earlier.

If you’re tech savvy you can jailbreak the kindle as well for quality of life benefits, but not strictly necessary.

    • I have a couple of Kindles but black screen white text on mobile OLED is actually pretty good

  • Best feature of the "signature edition" = ad free lock screen.

If you get the std paperwhite or the base kindle, the lock screen will regularly flip through different ads

    • 99% sure the Australian stock ones have no ads.

      • I’ve never seen an ad on any kindle I’ve owned or bought for my family.

      • Oh ok - didn’t realise that Amazon customised their products to different countries

Serves me right for relying on American reviews I guess

Wonder if they’ll bring them to Australia

        • The US ones have had the ad subsidized option for ages now.

Suspect nobody has offered them enough ad money in Oz to bother.

    • Battery life isn't much of a concern with these things, they last forever

      • Battery life os also not a problem with my S26 Ultra

        • My S26 Ultra barely lasts a day, too many features turned on I guess lol

      • Battery life for Kindle is legitimately months if you're a casual reader.

  • are these hackable?

    • 'hackable'

    • Get a Kobo if you want open and awesome

      • thanks

      • And not Chinese.

      • What additional features can a Kobo do?

  • Only really discounted $10 compared to when I bought it in June. Increase the base price

  • Hmmm I just bought 11th gen 16gb yesterday for $155. Is this better value?

    • If it's 11th gen paperwhite I'd say not really. This has slightly larger screen 6.8" vs 7", storage is ample at 16gb and a few other things like wireless charging auto adjusting screen etc aren't really necessary.

    • Just sharing that I'm still on the 7th gen… and if that ever dies, I think my replacement will be a bog standard kindle. It has the same form factor and it already has backlight which was my whole reason to get the paperwhite.

  • Can you still jailbreak these?

  • Tempted, but when trying to pay, it shows it will deduct from my gift certificate balance, is it same as gift card and qualified for cashback?

  • 25% faster page turns.

Honestly, if they have to brag about this kind of thing, they should sack the marketing department.

  • OP it’s 10% cash back on Amazon devices

  • Thoughts on this one with the new kindle models announced today?

  • Went to Officeworks and tried one. It is not cheap actually; can buy a ok 11 inch tablet at the same price. But still bought one in metallic Jade. Hope in the future, we can share purchased kindle books within the family, like in US.
