To Switch or Not to Switch AAMI Insurance

Normally changing home insurance nbn health cover etc…. I do it without blinking and harvest discounts/points.

I have been with AAMI insurance for 8 years now for my car because they always come out cheaper.

This year my renewal came in around $200 more than when compared with other companies.

My only issue is that I am a “diamond member” which apparently is hard to get and entitles you to a discount.

My fear in switching is that next year my new policy will naturally go up and I won’t be a diamond member.

So is it worth the $200 to be diamond?

  • so you are paying $200 per year extra to be a diamond member which entitles you to a "discount"?

    • Loyalty tax. You are buying into the exact BS they are selling with that 'diamond member' status.

    • it would be $x00 more if not a diamond, gotta get to platinum
      .

    • AAMI has always been cheapest normally around 1200-1300

This year 1600 and found other policies to be 1400.

  • Ring them and tell them youre leaving because of the additional $200. They might bring it down some more.

  • You should hold on for another 2 years and become a platinum for an extra $420.69 per year extra

    • That's what I did. Was eventually disappointed in my decision. 1 out of 5. Wouldn't recommend.

  • diamond member

That's how they get ya. Go elsewhere if it's cheaper.

  • Why don't you increase excess to reduce the cost?

    • Currently at 1000 excess and increasing reduces it by like $50

  • they all relay on complacency simply because people are lazy and it's a freakin' hassle to change.

when you have time/are really bored get some quotes and compare.

keep in mind cheaper insurers have lower standards - probably doesnt matter as much with car or health as its all in the contract and there arent as many corners to cut…but damage to property invites all sorts of weaselsy characters into the mix - estimators who ignore codes and standards/cut price tradies/seconds materials etc etc

  • Switch. They have games

  • But I really love diamonds

  • I get new quotes on every AAMI renewal and the only companies that come cheaper are those that aren't originally insurance companies such as Woolworths… I've seen very bad feedback and wouldn't change to those.

  • 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other

  • For the past 3 years, my AAMI insurance renewals have been cheaper than doing a new quote, and hundreds (some $1k+) cheaper than other insurers. Did a food spoilage claim 2 months before renewal and it was only a $30 increase.

Claims have also been very easy. As you've been with them for so long try asking if they can match the other quote as you prefer to stay with them

  • I'm looking to go to AAMI as they are $1k+ cheaper than NRMA for car and that's with max NRMA loyalty.
