  • Compare to novated lease, is this offer comparable benefit and simpler?

    • It is a loan - so you pay loan repayments + fees + rego + maintenance, etc with after tax money. You own the car at the end of the loan

Novated lease - you pay rego + maintenance + repayments (seems like interest rates are around 8-10% depending on NL provider) from your pretax money (ex GST). You don't own the car unless you pay the residual (~30-50% of car value, depending on how many years lease)

Will need to do the numbers to see what makes sense for you - in saying that 0.09% seems like they are giving the cars away, need to examine the fees to see what's the "catch"

        • This is a catch for the consumer how?

And how are you spinning a company who is in a emissions deficit being a bad thing?

          • @Windows98: Who said it’s bad thing for consumers.

        • How are purchasers using this loan to purchase BYD cars caught by BYD earning or selling its excess emission credits?

        • I was surprised to see Jaecoo cars are double the cost in the UK

Basically our dollar price is their GBP price..and a few thousand on top.

        • The catch is the cars are half the price in China

That is why good things come to those that wait.

BYD dropping Atto 1 to $20k and faux PHEV Atto 2 to record lows is just the beginning.

Don't forget there is so many EV manufacturers in China profit margins in China are record lows. They are also running out of affluent domestic consumers. China is flooding EU and anywhere they can with EVs (also why the US has banned them).

I'd suspect after the new year there will be more deals.

Remember Jaecoo J5 EV $36,990 is limited time only. That is the price. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes a bit lower. Because our car market is going to get flooded too and if they don't try to sell volume they become sub economic like the European brands who sell like 1000 cars a year can't survive. Look at GWM Ora. If you can't sell at least 10k units a year you are gone. It isn't about units, you're not getting enough units in hands of end consumer for word of mouth to get out and drive more buyers.

    • For the pure EVs go NL, Hybrid will depend on your circumstances. EVs will come from all your pretax salary where as any other car will have proportion before and after salary tax depending on your circumstances. Don't forget that it's all pre GST too the part that gets taken out before tax with NL and that is all your running costs too. It will come down to the deal you get through NL and direct with the dealer for non pure EV. There are a lot of factors.

  • Balloons are not eligible under this campaign. My kids will be sad :(

    • Ok JV

  • And there will be $13/mths repayment fee.

    • Isn't the whole point of a comparison rate that it is supposed to be able to be used to compare apples with apples (ie. loans with loans inclusive of interest rates, fees, etc)?

    • Always the fine print.

    • There wasn't any account fees for the last month 0.88% offer

    • There is no monthly fees.
      Source - have this offer

    • Only a ~$1500 "establishment" fee and an early exit fee, no monthly fees.

  • Bought back (FWD Starray EMI) in February at a much higher rate (0.88%), with fewer features. The car itself is great. My only gripe is the constant promotions that make a one-month-old purchase look like a bad deal.

Chinese brands have basically turned cars into mobile phones: loaded with features and priced well below the legacy brands. The big unknowns are durability and resale value. They make a lot of sense if you treat them like a subscription, where you don't count on any residual value.

I think the whole Aussie car market is in for a shake-up. In my view, there are three reasons Chinese makers can price so aggressively:

    1. The same cars sell for about half the price in China.
    2. Australia's emissions standard earns them green credits, which they can sell to other brands that fall short of their targets.
    3. They're buying market share now and worrying about profit later.
    • same here. but to be honest, I am still grateful for the 0.88%. I easily save around 6-7K by putting that money in my offset account (especially after the rate hike)

      • Depreciation is still an unknown, although it's improving for EVs and in the long term ICE vehicles depreciate faster if fuel stays expensive or goes even higher.

The cheapest car is the one you currently own, so if you don't actually NEED a new car, then it's cheaper to keep the one you have - even if it's say 12 years old, if it's reliable and you're spending less than $1k per year on maintenance, still cheaper than depreciation on a new car. But each use case is different, if you do a lot of driving, fuel is a sizable cost, so changing to an EV may then heavily reduce running costs which help cushion depreciation.

      • This! I’ve had to explain this to soo many people in geely groups - stick your money in the offset and take the cheaper rate

    • parts.

the insurance costs on these things could be massive. knock a mirror off and it can cost $15,000 to fix it with the lack of parts available.

      • The only way I can make this work in my head is you buy another car, remove said mirror and then sell the car for a 15K discount.

"For Sale: Brand new, delivery K's, missing side mirror"

      • Hyperbole Olympics.

      • What?

      • This was my original concern.
But considering in the last month they amount of geelys I have driven past I’m
        No longer worrying

I live in suburbia and a 15 min round trip to the shops I will drive past 3 min very time on the road at the lights etc. that amount on the road gives me peace of mind that there is going to be a bunch of parts in Australia soon enough.

        • hope so. or we will all be paying a lot more for insurance.

          • @StorminNorman: Don’t forget that geely owns a monster amount of (or a percentage of) other brands
Such as polestar zeeker smart car Volvo etc

In fact the door handles in the ex5 are from a polestar alone

      • Are you sure.

They almost all use the same parts. Ie, every Chinese EV has the same gear lever and center console.

Then there is a myriad of customisation parts on Ali Express/ Temu.

Ie.a new grill (fits Jaecoo and Omoda cars is $400).

    • I wouldn't call 0.88% a much higher rate overall. 0.88% is still exceptional compared to other finance rates.

      • True, I actually opted for a 2.88% for 5 Years, under 3% is way cheaper than using other finance sources

  • Not sure how they can have a comparison rate over 5 years when you can only have the loan for 3 years. Makes no sense.

    • Thats how comparison rates work. It tries to compare with the typical loan which is usually 5 years

  • The short answer for anyone wondering. If you have access to an novated lease. The NL is much better due to not paying GST, tax reduction and FBT exemption.

This is aimed at anyone who doesn't have access to a NL

    • I’ve never understood how NL makes sense with EVs in which you claim very little for fuel.

      • The tax saving comes from paying for the car itself (~$7000/year finance) plus insurance (~$2000/year) and registration ($950/year) also tyres and servicing , entirely out of pre-tax gross salary.

And unlike an ICE novated lease. There's no FBT at tax time which is the biggest winner for NL policies with EV currently.

        • Is there a hybrid strategy here somewhere? As second hand cars can also be put on a NL.

Ie. 3 years at 0.09, depreciate nothing. Then the next 4 on NL (so still get the GST, depreciation, major service and Fbt exemption)?

      • NL isn't about how much you save on fuel costs….

  • They also have 6% off vehicle price for Novated Lease. I got a quote from SGfleet few days ago, will ask for an updated one with this offer.

    • Can you let me know what interest rate SGF is able to offer on this car please?

      • Keen as well , thnx

        • @Brainwhacker @Megatron 10.16% for a 3yrs lease. I've asked for a better rate and updated quote with the 6% off offer. Will report back once I hear from them.

        • @Brainwhacker @Megatron interest rate is still the same, but they did apply the 6% off vehicle price.

          • @kuls: Yeah ok.. so that is how they want both customers, one going via NL and the other buying directly.. NL gets 6% discount and buying direct a near interest free loan. Bloody scammers lol

  • Can anyone confirm the exact fees for these geely loans?

The conditions mention an "up to" $1500 origination fee, which I assume is always $1500 and not really up to? And then Google also suggests a $600 establishment fee and a monthly fee ($13 ish), but I'm not sure if they are applicable.

    • Geely finance is pretty straight forward
Find the car , haggle a little bit in price (don’t let the try and sweeten the deal with car mats, they are months wait and are trash)

      Out a deposit (refundable)
Take the finance offer for x years
Pay a $1500 establishment fee which is rolled into the finance which makes this offer more like 2% all up

      • So the other fees that reddit mentions, such as the $600 establishment fee, is incorrect (or no longer applicable)?

Edit: to clarify, the $1500 is an origination fee. Reddit suggests there is also an establishment fee.

        • There is no extra $600 establishment fee, it's just the initial $1500 origination fee(or establishment fee if you want to call it that). Have heard some people were able to negotiate that fee.

  • Any reason i shouldn't buy a STARRAY EM-i if I plan to crush it into a cube after 8-10 years and recycle it. resale value is mostly the negatives i hear about them

    • All china cars are designed for a short life span
Re sale will be low because the market is flooded with them. They car is good bang for buck
But it comes with its quirks
The software can be clicky and the app is pretty crap
People say they have a hard time contacting Geely via phone .
But honestly why are they contacting Geely and not the dealership

When you buy a house able from having vey normal and have an issue you contact has vey Norman you don’t contact the factory that made it …

    • Depends how the market moves over that time. I think the fact that they warrant the batteries for 8 years would be the major factor especially if they all start to fail or not hold a reasonable charge after that time is mostly the reason why talk about resale value plummeting.

    • Having to still buy petrol and service an ICE engine is the main reason not to. Buy the EX5 instead.
Have had one for 5 months. Done 8000km on ours in the Hunter Valley with road trips. No regrets.

Resale value on all 10 year old card is terrible tbh, we generally dont buy cars worrying about its value in 10 years.

    • Chinese ICE engines have had mixed reviews. There's no real data to say how well the Geelys are fairing because they're a brand new brand.

Many of the chinese brands struggle with inconsistent dealership experience and long waits for parts. This can effect both EV and ICE drivetrains but with EVs there's few parts and generally less that can go wrong.

But resale is often affected by the deflation of the retail price as the Chinese brands keep chopping the price of new cars you really need to convince people to buy a used one (* I would imagine).

Also if you can get a Novated lease and are happy to go Chinese it'd be worthwhile looking into an EV because the price difference is so great. You can see the difference https://www.tfmnovated.com.au/calculator just switch between electric and anything else (PHEV is not considered "Electric")

    • If you do not need a car, if you worry about resale, if you worry about service and support/reliability, if you do not want to be cool :)
I own one, and I think it's a good car - for the money.

  • Honestly, the fact that this comparison rate excludes the dealer origination fee is hugely misleading. The entire point of the comparison rate is to be able to look at what the real rate is once you include fees. Once you throw in the Establishment fee, the real comparison rate goes to something more like 1.1%~

  • I don't know, but shouldn't any lenders quote in the way of "0.09% p.a Comparison", that consumer law requires all fees to be already included?

    • How did they arrive at a comparison rate of 0.09% with a upto $1500 establishment fee and $13pm fee?

      • I was told there is no establishment fee for the 0.09 product.

        • There is ALWAYS an establishment fee.
This is how the dealer gets their cut.
Who ever told you this is straight out lying.

      • There is no $13pm with geely finance

  • Don’t get the current EX5. The hugely superior RWD version has been launched in china.

    • That's exciting!
What's new? Do you have a reliable source that I can access?
I'm looking at an EV in April 2026. So doing my diligence now.

      • You missed April 2026 by six months

        • Lol yes, meant 2027!

    • I was told by geely sales person that it would not arrive in Australia for another 2 years. I'm very skeptical about his honesty as that makes no sense to me, but just FYI.

      • Of course a Geely salesperson is going to bullshit you. They want a sale now, they don't want you waiting for the vastly superior updated model. I reckon it'll be here in the next 12 months. Competition is white hot in this mid size electric SUV space at the moment.

  • Peeps who got this offer, what are the monthly repayments?

    • 1299.34 for last year's ex5 inspire

      • So $46,800 over three years? Not bad!
