Australian No-Sugar Cola Wars - I Made a Comparison Web app

I blind-tested 10 no-sugar colas from Australian supermarkets and went slightly overboard with the data

A few family members and I decided to compare the no-sugar colas you can actually buy at Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and IGA.

It started as a blind taste test and somehow turned into recording ingredients, sweeteners, sodium, pH, bottle volumes, pricing and 50 individual taste evaluations across 10 colas.

There were a few results I genuinely wasn't expecting — particularly some of the cheap supermarket alternatives.

I turned all the data into an interactive thing here:

Nothing for sale, no affiliate links or sponsorship — it was just a little experiment that got wildly out of hand and I figured other Australians might enjoy exploring the results.

Would be interested to know what everyone's actual go-to no-sugar cola is.

Edit:
Appreciate the cola discussions. It was evident even in our small tester panel that taste is pretty unique. For further context this was conducted on Father's Day for fun, and some of the findings were interesting enough to give to an agent harness to visualise. Also, Ive had an agent review the comments on this chat - and it will push an update tonight around fluid weights.

The next topic will be Dairy Milk Chocolate…

  • Understand about testing between different brands …

But shouldn't differentiate between different stores - unless you also consider …

1.) best before date (how long has bottle been sitting on shelf) +++ been in 40+ degree heat ???

2.) batch numbers … Most majors "should'nt diffientiate between batches" - but on occasion, some batches (of same product) are more acidic/ sugar them other batches.

    Just my thoughts.
Your approach certainly needs to be taken with a grain of salt (or sugar for that matter).

    • Yeah totally, just a family fun study.

  • I am genuinely surprised some people prefer Pepsi Max, I can't stand the stuff.

I'm a diet coke fan and find coke zero a big step down. But in order to save a buck and give less money to evil megacorps, I've come to enjoy the Que Cola and Woolworths home brand version.

    • Diet Coke is less sweet and more focusing on being light, sharp and crisp. My brother who is not a sweet tooth loved the diet coke, I was definitely the opposite and loved the La Maxi and Pepsi Max which are far sweeter.

    • Aren’t you lucky there’s a choice. I’m genuinely surprised that you’re surprised. Most people actually prefer Pepsi Max so you’re in the minority.

      • I thought they occupied the role of a knock-off drink for restaurants that wanted to save a few cents on a cheaper product. I have never heard anyone actually express desire for one so this is news to me! How do you know "most people prefer Pepsi" if they're a cheaper, smaller company than Coca cola?

        • You've been living under a rock. Pepsi doesn't occupy a large portion of store shelving for no reason - its sells, it sells well.

I personally buy both, they both serve as good mixers in different drinks. Sometimes you want a sweeter cola, sometimes you don't.

I never understood the unwavering loyality to cola brands some people have.
