[QLD] Brushed Potato $0.01/kg (Max 5 Bags / Family) @ Skippy's (All 4 Locations)

860

What a time to be alive. 1c/kg brushed potatos at skippys.
Seems a bit of a price war for 1-5c veggies/fruit specials between Skippys, Cocos and Rochedale Markets.
Good for the hip pocket…bad for anyone who is brave enough to try and find parking at the Mt Gravatt location.

Unlike the usual specials, this price is available across all 4 of skippys locations.

  • Yeah, the Mt Gravatt parking situation is shocking at the moment. It's fruit and vegetables people, get your shit together.

    • Its new, its cheap and nobody has any money. All things making them popular now.

They're open 24/7 so avoiding peak times is key.

      • People buying masses of potatoes to then let them go off at home.

        • One sack of potatoes is the easiest way to get into a U2 Concert.

          • @Lizard Spock: why bother u2 concert? i already got the best album from them for free on my itunes :) everytime apple music wont let me forget it

          • @Lizard Spock: Or, send all the family round to get 5 bags each, and make some whiskey mash.

        • Nah bulk prepare home style chips and freeze them. You'll have about 2-3 months to use em whilst they stay good. Though not the best spud for fries in this case, but cheap is cheap.

          • @GachaGamer: What is the best spud for fries in your opinion?

            • @cannibal: In aus, we don't really have much in the way of options, typically the supermarket variety commonly sold as an all purpose is the sebago. What your looking for is high a high starch content and low moisture, for this russets are generally the ideal choice, but rarely ever available in supermarkets, though you can find them sometimes at markets most often during august to arnd december. Of course, its not like you can't work around whatever potato you have, it just usually takes more steps for generally not as ideal a result, e.g. in this case we'd soak them to try and remove excess surface starch, let them dry, then par boil them, then let them cool/dry again before we freeze them (if preparing in bulk), otherwise it's usually a double fry.

      • Out of interest, I've noticed quite alot of these Fruit and Veg stores are open 24/7. Like, why would someone need fruit and veg at 2am?

If anything, it's more "dangerous" for them to be open at those hours because of unsavoury characters. Just trying to figure out the thought process behind why they're open 24/7.

        • Prob because you capture a niche segment like shift workers, people who hate crowds, insomniacs etc

My dad used to go to Bellas at all random hours as he will rage when in crowds…

        • I think it's more that they need to be open to receive trucks at odd times and then they'd have to sort the produce as it comes in. You can't really just leave it out. It'd be better to do these things when it's quiet anyway. If they are going to have people doing this stuff, might as well just open the whole store to the public.

Edit: I could very well be wrong. I've never been to any of these places outside of "normal" trading hours.

        • I'm sure you've craved a cucumber at 2 am…

        • To buy a banana to go with their disposable vape or Manchester cigs. These idiots have created a black market goldmine and think they're gonna use police to prohibit them from selling it. Cos that's worked before. I'm seeing people walk out of all sorts of shops and vape now.

    • Throwing out alternatives, Bellas Fruit Market has fairly good pricing, isn't too far from Mount Gravatt, and always has parking. It's my go-to.

  • Alright kids, we all walk in separately and pretend we don't know each other.

  • What are the 4 locations?

    • Skippy store 1, 2, 3 and 4.

    • Victoria point is the flagship location also has a juice bar and coffee

      Rothwell

Mt Gravatt (newest and prob the most conveniently located)

      Cleveland

      • the most conveniently located

        Based on?

        • It’s within 10 min drive of Westfield Carindale and mtgtavatt in off peak, it’s relatively close if you’re coming or going to CBD (in off peak). So there’s stuff you can do while on the way like shopping, rather then going to a more dedicated location just to visit a Skippys location. There’s also a bus stop right outside, and a major Bunnings opposite.

      • Not really convenient when i live on the Gold Coast.

        • True… fuel prices the way they are you’d prob want to load up on a little more than 5c of potato though if you’re making a trip

      • Is Rothwell where the bogan aliens landed? 🤔

  • Cocos and Rochedale Markets

Comparing Skippy's to those two places is terrible. Skippy's is a fruit and veg store. The other two are…well not somewhere I'll ever go back to after visiting once.

90s Cocos was okay. But now, nah.

    • I know what you mean however Coco's is good for picking up some either discounted deals or international foods that are hard to find, the quality of some of their full priced fruit & veg is questionable at times

    • 90s Cocos in SBK was awesome, back when Market Square was all one level. Good ol' days!

  • No way they make money by just selling them at this price so please people, buy something else instore full price to help their business sustainable.

    • you'd be surprised - owners likely have close (family) connections whereby they take seconds potatoes 'dirt cheap' which colesworths reject due to odd shape/sizing/appearance etc.

profit on a the crop is already achieved at market; if farmers dont sell rejects for something, they are off to landfill, animal feed and charities for nothing.

so farmers can pretty much give them away for a fraction of a cent/kilo, and retailers can still turn a small profit on the goods themselves + use them under the loss leader model to get the unwashed masses in store to fill a trolley while they're there.

      • But they still need to load that into a truck: Labour cost, transport them down: Disel, refrigerate to keep them fresh: electricty. That's why I say do the right thing with businesses like them.

        • yes, under loss leader for those reasons but (near) free goods make the deal viable - spuds are upwards of 30c/kilo at market

      • Coles and WW just sell the garbage these days. Their quality control is out the window. They cash in on their past reputation because they know most normies can’t wrap their head around that corporations can change policies.

    • Nah, it used to be a nice good quality fruit shop/deli, not this junk barn that it is now. I'd rather they don't find it sustainable.

    • Well you're already doing them a favour by buying potatoes that would potentially go to waste if they didn't sell

  • Do not abuse this. Help the business

    • What?

      • Abuse the business. Do not help

        • Help abuse the business. Doughnut

  • Also asparagus was $0.49 in Cleveland yesterday

  • I hope this includes the Southport Aust fair location too

  • these skippys deals are the only thing that has ever made me wish i lived in qld

    • Eating a zinger box while sitting at the beach at surfers paradise watching the sunset and a fist fight is not bad too

      • If you're sitting on the beach at sunset, isn't the view of the sunset blocked by all the tall buildings?

        • See the thing about that is…

jumps out the window and runs off

        • I think he meant the sunrise.

          • @WatchNerd: I doubt there would be many fist fights to watch at sunrise…

    • made me wish i lived in qld

      … not Hot 'n spicy KFC ?

  • What happens when you only buy 1kg of potatoes and pay with 5c?

    • you make Skippy's baby joey cry

    • A black hole opens and consumes this dimension. (This doesn’t actually happen)

    • It actually rounds to 0c. I'm not joking.
1c potatoes are effectively free when paying in cash

  • Monday : Potato Pie.
    Tuesday : Hassleback Potatoes
    Wednesday : Potato Bake
    Thursday : Potato Salad
    Friday : Rosti
    Saturday :Bangers and Mash
    Sunday : Potato Dauphinoise

    • It's the Irish way
or roast, mash, boil, bake, chip……

    • Reported for spam?

    • Hasselback everyday for the win!

  • Fk skippys. They are absolute idiots.

  • Looks like I'm flying to Queensland. A few fuel stops on the way but it's the only way to avoid biosecurity if I stick to private airports.

Kidding of course. Who has the money for that much fuel.

  • Irish frothing at this deal

  • Went there a couple days ago, queue's were 30 minutes long and police were there to ensure the street wasn't clogged, just a heads up.

  • Vodka sorted.

  • How do you clean these?
I bought brushed potatoes once, never again. They take way too long to wash properly.

    • with running and a dish washing brush.

then you peel it, then cook it…

    • i dont know how past generations survived in the wild

  • What if you pay with cash, would it round down to $0 lol?

    • Don't be tight. Oh sorry I forgot where I was.

  • Saw a video Coco gives away potatoes for free or so I forgot. Unlucky it is 20min drive for me so no.

  • So if I'm paying in cash, I can essentially get 10kg of spuds free? Bugger paying 1c/kg, too spensive.

  • I went down and checked them out. Was pretty busy to be honest.

5c /kg for brown onions also. Some had green shoots growing out of them but you can pick them out I suppose.
