Catches

  • It's a long trip. Melbourne on China Eastern leaves at noon, changes in Shanghai after 5 hours 55 minutes and lands the next morning, 30 hours in all. Coming home has a 14 hour overnight stop in Shanghai and takes 37 hours. Air China's Sydney flight is quicker, about 25 hours each way with a 2 hour change in Beijing.
  • Check China's transit rules if you want to leave the airport during a long wait, and whether you need a visa. The fare doesn't include a hotel.
  • The cheapest prices come from travel agencies. The tickets are non-refundable and changes cost extra, so read the rules before you book.
  • Stick to the dates above. Early November, January and March were dearer.
  • Adelaide was $1,508 and Perth $2,023 on 10 to 24 Nov. Adelaide's cheapest has a 1 hour connection on one leg, so check the connection time and how the ticket is issued.

  • I flew to Holland 3 days ago with ce and yes, it was a long trip.
    1. It's feels budget, food at start and end, so bring snacks as it's a long time in between.
    2. I opted for a free transit hotel, hotel was average but was a good break in between (*edit, free organised pickup and return)
    3. Seats are good and space surprisingly also, I at 1.8m had enough space
    4. Choose your days, Tuesdays seem to be near empty flights
    5. The terminal is quite boring, don't expect a great shopping and rest experience in your long transit.
    6. Getting a 24 hour transit via too me 20min on the spot

    • I’ve booked a fare to Madrid in February a few weeks ago and have the 14 hour wait on the way home. No one mentioned a free transit hotel. How did you organise that? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

      • In was able to book it on the ce website a couple of days before leaving. The website is not the most pleasant one (slow and a tad confusing). Apparently you can also ask for it at check-in but I have no experience with that.

  • I booked this deal recently but I'm yet to fly.
Free transfer hotel was available in Shanghai on the way over if stay is over 6 hours and less than 24 from memory.
You can stopover in Shanghai up to the same length of the Europe stay.
Open jaw options are available as well.

Eg I booked through trip.com. Melbourne to Shanghai, free transit hotel as I selected 18 hour stopover instead of standard 5 hour layover, shanghai to Paris, 3 weeks in Europe, Madrid to Shanghai, 3 weeks in Shanghai, Shanghai to Brisbane for under $1200

    • Sounds like a great price.

Haven't booked flights yet with trip.com

Let us know how it goes …

      • I attempted to book directly via china eastern, but it was crashing out with my stopover selections. I selected trip.com because apparently it has the best integrations to Chinese airlines and adds no change or cancellation fees on top of airlines( $200AUD change and $400AUD cancellation for my China Airlines flight).. It worked well for selecting stopovers and tickets were issues immediately. I was updated of a small change in times on one of my flights via trip.com which is encouraging.

Departing Aus beginning of November and returning back in Aus late December. Any issues I'll post back

        • Book with airline, you can also change the stopover period, and make a small stopover trip in shanghai.
