oh dear

indeed

Psyllium husk plain is so much cheaper lol, just add juice instead of water to it
- 10

where do guys get your psyllium husk plain from?
- 1

Coles and woolies sell it in their health food section, usually $7 for 250g but it might be 500g
- 3

@Spizz: You can get the powder but it doesn't mix well and clumps. I just use the regular stuff mix it in a glass of water and down the whole thing in one go.
- 2

Oddly enough chemist warehouse has it ever so slightly cheaper than colesworth, $13/500g https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/94841/healthy-way-sc…
- 1

I just sprinkle mine over morning muesli/oats. Don't even notice the taste.
- 0

I'm the biggest cheap arse, and even I wouldn't touch plain psyllium husk. Disgusting. Even when I mixed it with cordial, if you dont scull it in 5 seconds you'll be having to chew it
- 1

You’re meant to add enough water to it which makes it a Jelly, I’ve never had to chew psyllium husk in the 10 years I’ve been having it.
- 2

Absolutely agree worst texture in the world it feels like slime. It's one of the three things I refuse to eat again the others being kava and Bacopa monnieri.
- 0

I find it goes down well with milo if you are the type that mixes milo into your cold milk briefly then essentially eats the clumpy milo powder from the top - the texture matches (obviously have enough milk in between/small spoonfuls of wet milo/husk mixture to process the psyllum husk properly or have additional drink after). Rather than waiting for it to go jello.

Went through a tin of this
And then it returned the favour.

Cap
- 3

Don't know what "Cap" means - fiber rich foods often aid digestion, though it's other factors in the foods rather than the fiber, fiber supplements can not only hinder the uptake of nutrients, but can worsen constipation … believe what you want and find out for yourself!
- -7

Psyllium husk+ (Lots of) water == 💥 diarrhoea
- -5

@jimmykim: Diarrhea is medically considered a form of constipation.
.
Just for sh!ts & giggles - try a banana next time rather than rely on decades old information!- 0

You don’t understand science and evidence, got it
- 5

That’s not accurate. There’s no good evidence that dietary salts are the thing responsible for healthy digestion or that fibre has generally been shown to cause constipation.
In fact, randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews show the opposite for constipation: a 2022 systematic review/meta-analysis of 16 RCTs involving 1,251 people found that fibre supplementation increased the likelihood of a beneficial response to constipation treatment (RR 1.48), increased stool frequency, and improved stool consistency. Psyllium was particularly effective.
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9535527/
Fibre can improve constipation, particularly certain fibres such as psyllium, but increasing fibre isn’t universally beneficial for everyone. Hydration matters, and some people can experience bloating or even worsening symptoms with particular fibres. There isn’t evidence that dietary salt is a replacement for fibre or that salt is the primary thing responsible for normal bowel function.
- 13

Careful with bananas. Eating them green(ish) can cause constipation!
- 0

You'd have been better off highlighting the lead content than fiber 'doesn't help digestion / dietary salts help' whatever that means.
- 0

What lead content? I scoured the pictures and saw no such thing
- 1

They don't disclose it very well afaik. But psyllium can and often does have high lead content.
I think a while back many brands were tested and it varied but most had levels that were above maximal/safe limits when taken at the max dose
Not saying it stops me having it but was quite surprised when I found out
- -1

'fiber isn't the thing helping digestion' no one ever said it was? It's 'A' thing that helps digestion for people with certain digestive issues.
- -1

Reducing fibre HAS been linked to reducing constipation in very specific circumstances. In majority of time fibre is beneficial to digestion.
Potassium, sodium and magnesium are important to digestion when combined with fibre.
Metamucil is proven to help lower LDL cholesterol, support heart health, and manage blood sugar levels.

This stuff is incredible on a day-to-day basis - could be worth the premium for the taste/convenience factor alone (mix and drink instantly). I've also been using plain psyllium husk powder, I stir it twice and let it set into a jelly to reduce residue sticking to the spoon and cup, which is a little annoying.
- 1

Metamucil is just psyllium husk with sugar/sweeteners added. It's cheaper to buy a pack of psyllium husk and add it to your smoothie/juice, this way you're not stuck with a single flavour when taking this.
- 16

This is the way
- 0

I mix my psyllium husk with half a berocca tablet.
- 0

Guess I could try adding it to my morning whiskey
- 3

I had a tub of this and just never used it, based on the effort of mixing etc. Have switched to the gummie version for convenience and now my daily fibre compliance is much higher. They are more expensive per serve but chemWH/coles/woolies regularly have 50% off between them
- 0

I was wondering if i could add it to my slushy mix so i can have high fibre boozy slush!
- 1

I think these have Stevia as a sweetener?
- 0

Nope, aspartame
- 1

Perfect for Hyrox athletes lacking fibre
- 9

Other Ingredients (Excipients)
aspartame
citric acid
Flavour
maltodextrin
purified water
sunset yellow FCF- 1

yes
- 0

I combine a teaspoon of Metamucil with a teaspoon of psyllium husk, works a treat, gives me some flavour over having plain psyllium husk, but also the additional psyllium husk I find works better than just the ground up Metamucil form.
- 2

this seems like a great idea, i might create a little box of it with half meta half pure psyllium husk and just scoop that, shouldnt interact at all since its the same active ingredient.
- 0

i have been taking psyllium husk all my life. Cheap. Easy. I put a spoonful in my mouth and swallow with water as if I am having a tablet. Trick is not to breathe through the mouth. So put a spoonful in the mouth, for first few uses, just close your mouth, then take water and give it a rinse in the mouth and just swallow. As I said, treat it like taking a tablet. Trained my 10 year old as well.
- -4

What are the direct benefits do you see by taking this, if you don’t mind sharing? Thanks
- 0

better shits, legit
- 2

Dietary fibre can also help reduce cholesterol
- 1

Increase soluble fibre to help stabilise blood sugar, lower LDL cholesterol, and feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut.
- 0

Apologies, got too focussed on telling you the technique that I forgot to mention. Please ensure you have enough water. I usually have this before my meal so a spoonful with a glass of water and I end up having a glass of water after my meal as well.
This is one of the purest form of fibre.
It in terms of benefits it helps regulate blood glucose. It also helps lower cholesterol. My bowel movements are like clockwork. Farts are minimal and not stinky.- 0

You need a lot of water with psyllium husk. Don't encourage people to take only a swig of water ffs
- 1

This is literally the most dangerous way of having it and some packaging warns against that. Putting it dry in your mouth can cause suffocation if accidentally inhaled or blockage in the oesophagus as it hydrates, expands and becomes sticky.
Make sure it is properly mixed in water first, then drink quickly and follow with plenty of water.
- 1

terrible way to ingest it, thats almost just as bad as taking a spoonful of chia seeds with just a little water.
Cant treat husk like a tablet, people need to drink it with a full cup of water, preferably 300ML per tablespoon of husk minimum.
- 1

As I mentioned that is how I take it, how my son takes it. Apologies I got too focussed on telling the technique. It is true that you need to drink enough water. Anyways, this technique has worked for me for the past 30 years. It’s worked for my parents all my life and it works for my son so. It is not an easy technique. My wife could not do this technique.

My favourite thing in the kitchen for almost every night

I put half a teaspoon of Honest to Goodness Organic Psyllium Husks (400g) in my salads. This isn't a fine grind like the Coles one, which didn't work as well in salads for me. It's also great with yoghurt, though I prefer flaxseed/linseed with yoghurt.
- 0

I prefer flaxseed/linseed with yoghurt.
Yuck! Linseed! Linseed oil is for staining wood, such as floorboards. Human consumption? Gross. It tastes like solvent.
- -2

Save money and buy the plain stuff from Chemist Warehouse and add it to a protein shake with milk so you can't taste it. It's clumpy, but it makes the shake feel like more of a meal than a drink.

Noice. Went through a tin of this on my 30th, was happy with it, but so expensive.
Tried plain psyllium husk, foul
