Has Anyone Make Any Savings From Switching To YOUI Insurance?

I asked for quotes a few times for car and home, but after a long mandatory calls, I got extremely higher quotes (like 2-3 times more) than others like Budget Direct, Allianz, AAMI, even Banks like Westpac.

Seeing the ads with tagline, I actually wonder if anyone really ever has made any savings.

The call centre operator always said that their pricing is because they have an excellent claim service.
Obviously I cannot prove this is true, but I wonder how can claim service be better, is it by paying more? By approving everything we ask for? Under Australian Regulations, there is a maximum time limit to respond to a claim, so I don’t think I can really appreciate a fast response.

  • I refuse to get a quote from them until they remove the requirement to provide my contact details so they can spam and call me

    • Get a quote online outside of regular hours. I found doing so I was giving a premium price straight up without being called. Note that in addition to their call centre in QLD I believe they also have one in South Africa so bear that in mind time zone wise. Or simply do it on a Sunday I don't believe their call centre is open for sales then.

    • I did once go through with it… then after listening into sales guy’s pitch, kindly said… during this call i got a quote from aami and can you beat it. He said no and i again kindly replied, i think i’ll go with aami 🤨

    • Give them fake contact details.

      • They don’t show the price online. They ask for a phone number then call you. That is also why i never got a quote from them

        • They ask for a phone number then call you.

Which would've been fine if they were up front about it.
What isn't fine is they frame it like "We just need to verify your phone number".
Users enter their number thinking they'll get a code SMS, but nah, phone starts ringing straight away with a sales person on the other line.
I was fuming as I was trying to get quotes during work. I have completely written them off since.

          • @zonra: This very annoy me too, and the 30 minutes call asking the same questions I have already entered online. why? why? why?????

            • @Frankensnore: and asking way too much personal questions, it started becoming borderline harassment.

          • @zonra: I had the same experience, providing my phone number and expecting the quote to be presented on the next screen, but instead received a phone call.

        • They don’t show the price online. They ask for a phone number then call you.

In that case, just block their number after they give you a quote.

        • They don’t show the price online.

          Yes they do.

I saw the quote online after I did not give them permission to call me.

          • @jv:

I did not give them permission to call me.

            Screenshot?

            • @DoctorCalculon:

              Screenshot?

              of what?

              • @jv: Don't play dumb.

                • @DoctorCalculon: What are you on about?

                  • @jv: You claimed that they show the price online without an inbound call. So, show us the proof.

Every time I have done a quote with YOUI, after answering all the questions I hit the request a quote button only to be shown a page where I have to fill out my contact details for an inbound call. FFS!

                    • @DoctorCalculon:

You claimed that they show the price online without an inbound call. So, show us the proof.

                      They do…

How can I prove it? It was weeks ago…

All you do is don't tick the box for them to call you and close the quote process.
The quote gets saved and they send you an email.
Click on the link to complete the quote and it bypasses the need for them to call you…
My quote was about $2600 compared to just over $1900 with AAMI and youi have not called me at all.

                      • @jv: I'm with the Doc on this one. You're talking nonsense. I've just gone through the quote process and it won't let you progress unless you give it a mobile number. Not happening.

                        • @banana365: I did give my mobile number, but did not tick the box giving them permission to call me. I stopped the quote process at that point and saved it.

I then got an email allowing me to continue where I left off. I completed the rest of the details via that link and the quote appeard on the screen. Have not been called once…

                          • @jv: There is no option to untick a box and not get a call.

Just tried to get a real quote and this is the screen requiring you to put in a mobile number and confirmation pin and states "By entering this PIN and clicking agree and continue, you are consenting to be called about your requested quote(s)."

There was a few weeks ago when i did a quote.

                              • @jv: This is interesting.

I didnt complete the online quote and I have just received an email to complete the quote from Youi, 1 hour later. Continuing with the quote and answering more questions it then gave be a online quote price!

                                • @Clivey In Space:

Continuing with the quote and answering more questions it then gave be a online quote price!

                                  Yep…

                                  All the neggers should apologise…

      • I just have no interest in being spammed by them so am happy to do quick online quotes with companies that give me the amount on screen without harvesting my data for call backs

        • I just have no interest in being spammed by them

I've yet to receive any spam other than one email reminder in the last few weeks.

      • That used to work years ago but most providers now make you enter a SMS code.

  • Do they still do that trick where you try and get an online quote but it says it can't and someone then calls you?

Haven't bothered for a quote since they were doing that about 15 years ago.

    • Yes still doing it and I no longer check with youi when comparing quotes

    • They do but annoyingly the quotes are often really good. Eg my recent one where i had another policy already with them, got a new car ans the quote was around 40 percent lower than others.

I abaolutely hate the phone calls though.

  • Notorious for their tactics - no online quote, they hound you over the phone and delay as long as possible before giving you some stupid high quote. Seems they prey on the elderly and lonely, by proving a "kind" person to try and sucker you on the phone. Insurance maggots.

    • There's a special place in hell for politicians, real estate agents, harvey norman salesmen (and gerry harvey) and people who work for insurance companies.

I recently had an unpleasant experience with one of the "good" ones (shannons) and I was shocked at how poorly I was treated, when I questioned the ridiculous quote (they wrote my car off over a couple of scuffs on the fender) the guys attitude instantly turned, and he didn't even want me to look at getting another quote. I would suggest staying away from them.

    • I do feel like being scammed

  • I have had the same experience as you for YOUI car insurance.
Clean record and have never had an accident or made an insurance claim.
    Stupidly high quote.

    • The staff there trying to be your 'friend' by asking too much personal questions like your fave holiday destinations or fave pets.
If instead they try to focus on the products they selling the price would have been more competitive.

    • How likely is car accidents btw

      • Considering I am seeing less and less people even use indicators when turning, likely pretty high….

  • YOUI = YOU IDIOT.

  • I tried a quote with youi. gave my number. they called and gave the estimate. it was over double what the cheapest i had found. such a long winded phone conversation.
    never again.

  • Refuse to deal with a company that makes mandatory call part of the quote.
A quote should be a no obligation price indication, not an opportunity to hard sell expensive service.
Can guarantee they won’t be so keen to talk to you if you need to make a claim

  • Youi quotes were the dearest and very intrusive in my experience.

  • Their premiums are high because they need to pay for the inane and annoying adverts.

  • I was with Youi for years, the key is to just tell them you have a better quote or price somewhere else. They always then were lower than my lowest quote. Every year they put my car insurance up, over 10 years, every year I would phone and say WTF are you serious, every year I got put onto someone else who said we can make an exception and came back lower to a price I was happy with. The last year before selling car I complained and they came back 40% cheaper…not making that up. I asked if this was just third party at this price but assured me not. Paper work came through, easy.

If you want better price need to old fashion barter cheaper.

    • I tried that recently when YOUI upped my comprehensive insurance for the renewal from $1,490 to $1,710, while also increasing my excess from $1,200 to $1,300. All they could do was take $100 off while leaving the increased excess. I don't see a reason to use them again in the future.

      • Fair enough. I was with them for 13 years (life of having my new car to getting rid of it) and in my final year I was full comp for $470, car devalued down to $15K. But still argued or bartered every year.

But if value is not there no reason for you use them, were all out to save a dollar.

  • Most insurers can run ads that say the same thing as people rarely switch to pay more money. Youi just got in first (as their main pitch).

Claims are a hard one to quantify. Online review sites like ProductReview are useless as they are simple to manipulate. LMI claims comparison does a somewhat decent job of ratings claims amongst insuers: https://claimscomparison.com/ . Youi score 3.5 stars which is fairly average.

  • I had a decent boat insurance quote from them.

All car insurance quotes have been stupid.

  • Same as KFC.
I can't see how they spend millions on promotion without increasing prices or reducing quality

  • YOUI quote was about 30% more than RACV, AAMI and Budget Direct.

Maybe they don't want new customers?

    • Most likely just wanting older customers who don't shop around. Oh I just saw an advert on commercial television with that lovely guy from Have You Been Paying Attention and he was saying YOUI is great so lets give them a call (yes on the phone) and join them.

  • Unlucky you are with AAMI YOUI.

  • YOUI quote was ridiculous in comparison to other insurers. No thanks.

  • I've stopped multiple times at the callback step, but carried through once cause I was curious to see what they could offer. This was a few years ago, so can't remember what the exact price was, but it was around double my best quote. I remember the lady I was speaking to was very kind and apologetic about the bad quote.

If they'll stick with the callback tactic to receive a quote, I don't think I'll ever bother again. Not to mention the terrible TV ads.

  • Youi is terrible

They sometimes keep taking your money even after you cancel the policy and say that I thought you wanted to pause not cancel

Also their refusal to remove your credit card from their profile is insane and red flag right there

Not sure about now but you could only call and they won't put anything in writing so in disputes is your word against theirs unless you have a recording of your call

  • I don't understand why they market themselves as cheaper when they're consistently the most expensive. Do they think we're stupid?

    • The answer is yes. They're hoping people believe the ad and don't shop around. Once they're on the phone talking to the pushy sales rep they won't say no.

  • I would never go with them , ever

  • Youi is consistently more expensive than others…So no.

  • I was with Budget for about 10 years but when I made a claim they were terrible to deal with. Car had to go back several times to get repairs up to standard. I shopped around and Youi was about $250 per year cheaper than them plus free roadside assist. I have been with them for several years now and it only goes up about $20 per year.
I have only made 1 claim in the last 30 years , I think this helps . They are mainly interested in drivers with a good history.

  • Short answer is NO

  • Yooui were $1000 more than Budget Direct for my Ioniq 5. Yeah nah.

  • I have used them for ctp once or twice

  • For me Youi were a little cheaper for contents than GIO & Budget Direct, heaps cheaper than NRMA or Coles.

For car insurance, on a new car with a new car replacement for first two years, low km/year and garaged at all times, they were the cheapest.

Renewals are coming up in the next month or two, so I'll see how they stack up for the 3rd year.

I don't know how they calculate the risk factor and price it, but it looks like at the back end all the retail brands end up in very few buckets with bugger all difference between brands in the same bucket.

  • Yep they always seem cheaper on my annual car insurance. I do a ring around each year JIC but so far so good.

  • youi - we get your money

    • They didn't get mine.

  • I am quite surprised there is about 10% here who got cheaper quotes. I have moved suburbs, cities in Australia and genuinely patient enough to go through their mandatory 20 mins calls each time and never got anywhere cheaper.

Fyi, I have never made claims before. So maybe it is cheaper for those who has.

  • If I am not mistaken, this is the company that doesn't give you a quote but would go on to ring you to talk about the quote you're making.

In the quest for cheaper car insurance, the quote they gave me came up 3rd highest, which was about 1.5x what I ended up paying.

  • I am with Youi and have mixed experience with them.

My recomendation is to not call them first for a quote, call them last when you have a few and see if they beat it.

Their service is good with accidents which my wife likes as she wants eas of use over anything else which may have a premium.

  • Mazda cx3 2016 currently paying 1600. Youi quoted me $3200

  • FWIW we've had a great experience with Youi, not only as the people on the phones super chill to talk to, but they have come through on our first claim (been with them for 3 years now). They identified roof maintenance that was required to keep the insurance cover going, and after several months of us not being able to find someone to do it (the shortest wait time we had for a roof plumber was 11 months..), they got someone to come out and do it and it hasn't cost us anything extra.

  • Always more expensive than others. Wasting their money with advertising.

I've had positive claimed experiences with Woolworths and Bingle of all places.

  • I’m not sure why, but they are cheapest for me. I’ve got two cars with their insurance and I always check other quotes. I must fit the type of driver they want…?

  • Unlike that you can speak to a human (probably) to get a quote… Guess that's just me. I get their quote last after all other online quotes so I have a good comparative by the time. Couple of years ago the human at the other hand managed to match and even beat one quote. That was 2 or may be 3 years ago. Since then never managed to get a good price from them.

  • They've always been more expensive for me when I checked them out, for both home and car insurance, for over a decade now. Often considerably so, 2-3x like the OP, but sometimes an admittedly smaller but not insignificant difference.

Have had GIO, QBE, PD, NRMA, Allianz and Budget Direct during that period.

I don't know why I even bother going through their PITA quote process, but I must admit it's almost impressive that despite their brand positioning, across multiple homes/vehicles/suburbs and life circumstances changing as it does from my late 20s to my early 40s, they've not once been competitive.

  • As soon as any insurance asks me to put in my number, I close the page. Same with solar I just want to use the damn calculator not talk to someone.

Anyway, $1k more expensive than AAMI, so no thanks

  • The way we all get quotes for insurance is about to change dramatically. Put your details into an ai agent (dot, grok bot, muse etc) and have it run around doing all the work for you.

Will be interesting how youis “we’ll call you” process fits in here. Either they miss out on a whole heap of business or it actually turns into a plus for them as it stops them being commoditised by bots.

  • I tried once a few years ago and the quote was very mediocre (about 20% more), since then the phone call thing means I don't even bother trying them anymore.

  • I have found that they are between the cheap and nasty Budget Direct (and any other AGI underwritten eg. Coles, Auspost etc) and mutual funds like RACV/RAA/RACQ. It's a decent choice if you want to diversify away from having all eggs in the AGI basket. Youi underwrites itself.

  • Never - their interrogations / quote calls have invariably delivered quotes 2 - 3X higher than current. Don't waste your time.

  • No. Spent 30+mins with them, was always higher.

Should send them an invoice for my time tbh

  • Youi quoted me double of what my renewal with existing company was for home and contents insurance.

  • I tried twice with 2 different cars. First time was when they first started and second time 3 years ago. Both times they were more expensive than RACV

  • I have, have recommended others try it and every single one of them has got a horrid quote. I've even had bad renewals a few times and called up and they managed to drop 100 or so each time.

Conversely with other insurers like shannons i've had the 2-3x treatment. And not only that often their quotes wouldn't even cover the cost of replacement.

  • Youi have always been more expensive for me, however my Sept CTP was roughly $60 cheaper than everyone else if that counts. First time i've ever seen Youi cheaper than anyone else on the market to be honest.

  • Eventually gave it a try on their quote. Filled up the queries online and still had to go through the mandatory call before you go off the Quote page now basically you have to give consent for them to call you straight away (during work hours). I tried cutting short and try go straight to the quote but yeah the sales team would try to gauge more information to stay longer on the call.
For my case, I only spent around 20 minutes and asked if they could send me the quote into my email after the confirmation call.

I have provided all the details required for the comprehensive premium but yeah unfortunately the result is way too far off from my current premium (I remembered seeing the Ads always say Youi got you better).

Despite trying to give me a first year discount, it still comes at 120% more than what I am paying now. Let alone if the premium is not discounted. YMMV.

  • In the boat with the majority here. Youi, saves you money… by not going with them

  • Under Australian Regulations, there is a maximum time limit to respond to a claim, so I don’t think I can really appreciate a fast response.

Yes, but there are also people constantly taking insurers to AFCA for a reason. The happy journey is always nice and smooth until you got lost for some reason that's got nothing to do with you.

  • it was twice as much as budgetdirect, and they insist on a call which I declined and blocked. eventually they just sent a quote. what a waste of everyone's time

  • Ed Kavalee: "They drove a dump truck full of money up to my house. I'm not made of stone!"

  • I used them when we got a new car (second hand but new for us) - as they were cheaper and had all the things I wanted for a performance car. But then when it came to renewal they had removed the repairer of choice so we went with Shannons. Check the PDS for exclusions of the things that matter to you. They may well turn out to be cheaper or they may not.

  • For years, no it was such an annoying process, i wanted a quote but got some overly cheery person call and ask a thousand questions then despite being stupid low risk, car barely driven, quote was very high.

Then randomly one time all the quotes were very reasonable, we moved the house, both cars, and caravan over. First year they tried to jump renewals which they folded on when i called up. Second year same thing. We had a not at fault accident and they managed the claim, their repairer was completely shit the car went back 4 times, the phone people were unhelpful. Third year the renewals jumped we started migrating to other insurers.

  • While entering your information into the youi webpage seems like you are getting a quote … think again
The only information that is important to youi is your contact details.
    Why?
When they ring you none of the information you filled out on the website is available to the youi rep calling you (except your contact details).

LOL this includes when making a claim - even a no fault claim.

  • We have moved most of our insurances over to Youi and saved a bit. Was with Allianz and CGU for a while, where we experienced issues that people are describing here. Also had CTP through GIO, which we ended up moving over to Youi. Didn’t have any of the hassles that people are describing on this thread.
Am genuinely surprised by the experiences people are listing here, but I know it does happen, depending on a number of things. Could be worth trying again with Youi and perhaps getting another person to assist you.
The other one we found pretty good, in the case of owning a boat, was Yamaha (can’t remember the underwriting entity).

    • CGU

      That's IAG's commercial brand.

      • I lost track of who’s who tbh

        • I mean, did you use a broker?

          • @ihbh: No, there was no need. What prompted the change was years of loyalty to other insurers and perceivably not being treated as loyal customers. So we decided to try a change and Youi actually came through for us. Luck of the draw perhaps.

  • Surprisingly youi were the cheapest for me. They called me up and I negotiated with them. I never use to bother before with Youi.
