ATM Direct Charging Fees
After 3 March 2009 the Reserve Bank of Australia introduced ATM direct charging in Australia.
This allows ATM operators to charge their users a fee for completing a transaction at the ATM. The fee is displayed and charged by the ATM owner at the time of use, and will appear as a separate item on your account statement.
After October 2017 the four major banks (CBA, NAB, ANZ and WBC) announced that they would no longer charge the direct ATM fee for other Australian cards. See:
* Ozbargain Thread regarding Commonwealth Bank
* Ozbargain Thread regarding Westpac, NAB and ANZ
This means that if you want to use an ATM not from a major bank you may still be charged foreign ATM fees - unless your banking product rebates the fee (see, for example, ING Direct and Macquarie).

ING will also rebate international ATM fees if you meet the above criteria.

(3) NAB ATMs located in Coles Express service stations are or have been transitioned out of the rediATM network.
