            @AustriaBargain: A single RTX4090 is still more powerful for AI inferencing than the M4. The massive advantage the M4 has is its lower power requirements and that its coupled with a CPU.

      I think Apple jumped to the M4 as it had built in a big neural engine in the SOC for on board AI.

      We will have to see what the software will be to take advantage of that at WWDC next month.

      The other possibility is that Qualcomm is releasing its laptop ARM SOC soon and has been claiming at high clock rates (and power consumption no doubt) it can give an M3 MBA a run for its money. the new iPad was next cab in the rank.

        I think that the M4 was made because of the new OLED screen. It was definitely in the works for a while, but a big obstacle for the implementation was the lack of light output compared to their previous miniLED display (ie, it was just too dim compared to last year).

        So to remedy this, they just got two OLED displays and stacked them on top of each-other, which allowed for both more light output, a wider range of colours and intensities, and less wear on the display over time, but then they needed to try to combine the properties of both displays (such as longer combined lifespan, brighter output and more accurate colours) into one display, which allowed Apple to justify creating a completely new chip with a display controller just for the iPad Pro (so far).

        But since the display controller is in the M4 chip, it’s practically confirmed now that the next MacBooks (at least the Pro ones) will have this same Ultra Retina XDR displays, since no part of these new chips will go unused on the new MacBook Pro laptops.

          Like you said, makes it tricky for the Macbook - an M4 would need an alteration to work on a MB with an LCD screen. It would cost too much to go OLED there. Or maybe they would, and become the best laptop in that category bar none? (with the exception to the usual ram problem)…

    I'm upgrading from an iPad Air 2 to the iPad Pro 13" 1TB, so for my situation, waiting for the last 12+ months for the new model has been very well worth the wait. Plus I've got the full amount ready with 10% off Apple GC's so getting 10% off the total price is also a bonus.

    It's probably overkill for more recent iPad models, but for older models like mine, this new Pro model is a no brainer.

        Yeah that's why I held off on buying. I was wanting to get the 2022 model about 6 months after release, but then I started reading about how the next model was expected to have a massive overhaul. I'm very happy with what they've done with this new model, especially the matte glass. Reading outdoors is going to be a much better experience than the reflective gloss.

        I'll still need to see it physically in store first before buying, but given the spec bump I'm going to, I envisage that this new Pro will last me a good number of years, so the ROI is quite high for my use case.

          Not sure what tasks you will be running on the M4 iPad pro but given you have been using an dinosaur iPad air 2, I would assume that would be nothing heavy, otherwise you would have definitely upgraded perhaps back in 2018, when the full-screen iPad Pro came out.

          My wife owns an iPad pro 11 inch 2018 and I use an iPad pro12.9inch M1, I dont see the difference in terms of performance at all for my use case scenario: notetaking, youtube, NAS streaming, and some MS work.

          However, if you have just recently changed your career and skillset to be a content creator or artist and MUST buy an M4 to meet your essential needs, and have the money to spend, why not?

          I would just get a secondhand or Apple refurb M1 which is crazy fast and still future-proofing.

      What do you use it for to justify the upgrade? is it just to have the oled screen? i cant see any real use case for the pro (as a 12.9 M1 pro owner)

        Well, the fact that my current iPad is 10 years old is a good justification for starters lol But yes, the OLED screen and 1000 nits (vs 410 nits on the Air 2) is a definite win for me.

        I use it for work, trading/charting, reading, conference calls/meetings, video/photo editing, video streaming (on flights and when traveling). I do most of this already Air 2 but it's really sluggish, the screen is too small and I love the idea of a matte screen for when I'm outdoors. And given that it has the new M4 chip and a tonne of storage, I'll hopefully get ~10 years out of this new one.

          Sadly all tasks you mentioned are easy as F**K for a 2018 iPad Pro. For the screen you can get the mini led 12.9 M1 which is already stunning and has over 1000 nite brightness. For the matte part, put on a paper-like screen protector then you are good to go.

          P.S. You can use m4 pro for 10 years but doesn't mean you can enjoy it for 10 years…just like you have been struggling with your iPad air 2 for a while. Settle with what you actually need and save a bit, then upgrade in 4-5 years (then sell the old one when it still holds value), then you can enjoy the entire 10 years not stucking with the old but expensive tech you paid for.

            Why would I buy a 6 year old iPad and hope it's going to last another 4-5 years? That makes no sense. Apple may not even be supporting OS updates for that model by then.

            You can use m4 pro for 10 years but doesn't mean you can enjoy it for 10 years

            Why wouldn't I enjoy the new M4 for the next 10 years? I still absolutely love my Air 2 and to this day it's still enjoyable to use, albeit a little sluggish. It was wrapped in 3M vinyl from Slickwraps and had a screen protector put on it the instant it came out of the box and it still looks like it's barely 2 months old. So rest assured, I still get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

            Settle with what you actually need and save a bit, then upgrade in 4-5 years

            Maybe you missed my earlier comment - I've been saving for well over a year:

            What I actually need is something lighter, more powerful and with much better tech that will last 10 years or perhaps (hopefully) even more. Just because it doesn't fit your use case or preferences doesn't mean it won't fit someone else's. And there's no denying that the M4 is bound to bring way more enjoyment than a heavier, older and much slower tablet (which let's face it - it'll be super slow in 4-5 years time as we all know that Apple OS updates are more targeted towards newer devices and tend to bog down older ones). And let's not forget however many battery cycles 6 years have put on the 2018 model.

            If your argument was comparing the 2022 model, you may have more of a valid point. But the M4 will run rings around the 2018 model and it'll have support for way longer. So for my particular need and use case, there's no contest.

              I kept saying an 12.9 M1 would be a good buy if you read my comments to yours earlier.

              Regarding the 10year part, I meant better off buy a m1 or m2 now then sell snd upgrade after 4-5 years for a M7 M8 rather than using a M4 for 10 years. As the second 4-5 year phase you will be suffering rather than enjoying even it’s M4.

              All in all that’s your money do whatever you like, I am here to contribute to the site and share my real world experience that other people might find useful.

                @NoBargainNoLife: I've got a spec'd out M1 MacBook Pro and it's a beast. An M1 in an iPad would most definitely keep pace for many years.

                Worst case scenario, if technology takes such a rapid sprint forward and/or my requirements change (or the M4 doesn't cut it anymore) then I'd probably just sell the M4 for whatever is coming out at the time.

                Appreciate the feedback and real world experience though. Food for thought but I've been waiting too long for this one now haha

      Yeah I am wondering that. The new iPad Air is an M2 like the old M2 IPP which I had at my old work. I used it for everything: ms office, one note, field survey work, presentations etc.
      completely paperless.
      But what it still has over the new M2 IPad Air is a 120hz ProRes screen, four speakers instead of two in the air, and thunderbolt able port for fast storage..

      So if the M2 IPP can be had close to it the same price as the new Air, I will get the the IPP.
      Although that M4 IPP is very desirable.

    My iPad Pro 12.9 inch M1 with Logitech combo touch and pencil work like a charm and I don’t use laptop anymore unless travelling. Funny enough I planed to buy a MacBook Air M2 after selling my intel MacBook Pro a while ago but I settled with my old T480s as I don’t travel much now. (I have desktop at home and office).

    As iPad still can’t fully replace a laptop due to the iPad OS, the new iPad pros are just ridiculous. I don’t see any reason to upgrade it to M4, given I probably only use 10% of the performance of M1. Video streaming, note taking, displaying… a basic iPad can also do, pro just has better experience but not essential for me or any normal people not artists.

    Like someone mentioned above the price for base model pro $1699 can get you a MacBook Air and a base iPad when on sale, this is absolutely genius if you need a laptop.

      I have the same setup as you. Everything I’ve thrown at it works great. Even editing video in DaVinci Resolve was smooth.

      It would be nice if Apple could give iPadOS the ability to run more programs. Maybe even some MacOS programs/functions.

      Maybe the M4 is needed to run the calculator planned for the iPad. 😂

      I don’t understand the desire for a magic keyboard apart from the elegant beauty of it. I have been using iPads for 11 years and never had a physical keyboard. Just use the inboard one, or for the last two IPPs the pencil has become a major input device for me.
      If you really need a physical keyboard just get an MBA. And if using the IPP in a desktop setup just use any Bt keyboard.

    If you're a teacher like me you can salary sacrifice an Ipad/Laptop every 12 months. As you also don't pay GST you're saving around 40%. I bought the 6th Gen 12.9" Ipad Pro (128gb) for $1650 last year and reckon I can sell it with the Apple Pen 2 for maybe $1100-$1200 (looking at Ebay recent sales). So I should be able to get the new 13" with the Pro Pencil for around $300 out of pocket…that's what I've been thinking I'd do, but after all your great comments above I may just save my money (are you allowed to use the "s" word on this site?)

              Its mainly when you compare to medicine, investment banking, law, that private practice compares favourably.
              Post-doc unfortunately don't have has many lucrative alternatives as teaching

    Absolutely pointless update

    I have a 2019 13 inch iPad Pro - it’s awesome but I mainly just use it to read or as a second screen for uni notes. It was overpriced even then mid to high 1000

    Recently bought the m3 MacBook 16 and was curious if the iPads were much different now vs 2019 so had a look- it was pretty much the same apart from cpu speed which in real world tasks will make stuff all difference.

    I don’t think apples own comparison tool lets you view this as they know it would be laughable. They not let you compare to really old models

    I’m very excited by the possibilities of the hardware that will be unlocked once Apple opens up iPadOS to third-party stores (as per the DMA in Europe).

    Being able to run something like Wine or Box64 for Windows applications, or even being able to use GPTK for running games, will literally give me a reason to get this over a MacBook.

    There are some compelling arguments for iOS apps being better than macOS ones. Eg Netflix allowing downloading vids for offline use, while this cannot be done on macOS. So if the power in these new iPads is enough to replace your laptop, then that's who this is for. Those who want a hybrid of both worlds. If you just want to use the iPad as a simple consumption device, then you'd be insane to look at one of these unless you're a screen fidelity fetishist.
