good to see dick competing with amazon

    • +16

      Thanks to your post.

      • +15

My first thought was 'they must have checked OzB this morning!'

        • +77

course they do, they check to see if they made any mistakes then either remove that product or expire the code for it :)

        • +39

          @TRENT86:

Maybe next time i should criticize dick more in my deal descriptions to get a better discount

"Sick and Tired of dick busting your balls" , "Are you frustrated from dick just being a dick", "Or is Dick just being a pain in the as$" .. Well then head down to Amazon to score this great deal ……….

        • +3

@easternculture: Funny thing is even though dick can be annoying, dick has the best sales of them all :)

        • +3

@TRENT86: then DS should pay us a fee for testing their online store and codes etc.

        • @wtfnodeal:
          Totally

        • @TRENT86:
          Except there's never a reason to buy a non-sale item…

    • +2

+1 sorry EC, pressed "-" by mistake

    • +30

      dicks on the ball today!

  • +17

Wow ozbargain exclusive +1 for that alone

    • +18

The code seems too generic. Next time Rep should use "OzbargainRules10" to make us more happier.

      • Id prefer "OzbargainRules100"!

      • +1

        @YYY:

        more much happier
        You are welcome. XD

  • +1

You can click and collect at your local store for $39.

  • +4

Wow, DSE acknowledging ozbargain! That is a +1.
So $41 all up. Pickup available?
    edit: yes!

  • thanks..

  • "… and then there were four" Chromecasts in my house :)

    Cheers REP!

    • Yay, arrived about 30mins ago! 24 hours from purchase to delivery as per all my other DickSmith purchases. Nice!

  • +5

FYI, in case it changes anyone's decision, Google have confirmed a version 2 is on the way: http://9to5google.com/2014/10/22/google-confirms-that-a-seco…

    • how much of a difference do you think there will be between this and the second one? btw does anyone know if we can run XBMC on chromecast?

      • No idea. They haven't released any details about it other than that they're working on it.

      • +1

FCC filings suggest it'll suport 5GHz Wifi so if you live in an apartment or somewhere with a similarly crowded wifi spectrum it might be worth waiting.

        • No they don't, that was someone misreading the FCC data.

On Reddit the team were basically saying you shouldn't expect v2 to be another other than changing out a chip that's no longer made. That change might change the price, but that's all you should expect.

      • No you can't run xbmc on Chromecast. But if you're running the paid version of Yatse on an Android device, you can use it to stream any content that xbmc knows about to Chromecast. That's actually quite a nice solution for an extra five bucks or so to buy the licence for Yatse. I haven't actually used Chromecast though.

  • How limited is the Chromecast's use in Australia compared to the US for instance?

    • +1

      identical with a VPN :)

      • This is very highly dependant on your VPN set up, like if you're routing your whole network through or just a PC/tablet/phone.

For it to work with a VPN, you need to be pretty much routing your entire network through the VPN or set up something fairly complex to route traffic from the Chromecast IP through your VPN tunnel, and I suspect doing something like that is beyond most users.

The other option is to use a DNS based unblocking service, like unblock-us or unlocator, but that's also fairly dependant on your router supporting setting up a static route so you can block Chromecast from using Google's own DNS servers.

        • +1

Am using DNS off Unotelly. Works perfect, don't have to worry about speed penalty.

        • @shadowarrior:
Agreed - Unotelly is an excellent service. Was using UnblockUS but switched to Unotelly - much more flexible. Chromecast + netflix works perfectly after blocking Google DNS.

        • Another vote for Unotelly! Works great, no slowdowns and is cheap.

    • Depends on your VPN/DNS set up. You'll struggle to use Hulu or Netflix through it without some changes to your router set up. But you can cast through Presto and Ezyflix. Would be great if the TV channel catch up services came to the party though.

If an App doesn't support casting, you can always play it on your computer through Chrome and it'll work.

  • +4

    Thanks dick

  • Got my $10 voucher (for $5) yesterday, so the timing on this is pretty good.

    • +1

Can you stack vouchers though? Please report back if so as I'm sure others will be interested to know.

      • I only used the one voucher, as I was purchasing online. There is only scope to enter one unique code and PIN. If buying in-store, I would imagine that you could arrive there with a stack of vouchers without a problem. (PS: I did think about waiting a while to stack some vouchers and then buying in-store (at full price) but the whole process is so problematic.)

        • +1

You can use multiple vouchers online as well. Just put in the new number and pin and hit update.

      • +2

If you're talking about gift cards, yes you can use multiple cards. I just applied 3 of the $10 gift cards bought in recent weeks for $5 each.

After entering the card number and PIN, click the update totals button, then overwrite the card number and PIN fields for the next card and click the button again. The cards will be listed in the transaction summary along with the $10 off voucher.

        • +1

Thanks, unfortunately I can't edit my earlier post to correct the information. Maybe I should have waited until I accumulated a few more gift cards!

Dick's in business due to Ozbargainers. High time they acknowledged it.

    • +1

they can reduce the call centre staffs to just 5, and instruct them to serve ozb members only

      • +21

        *increase to just 5

    • +1

Dick's in business due to Ozbargainers. High time they acknowledged it.

Not really in the sense that I think you mean it. Probably acknowledging ozb because it is a large community but all in all i'd say we are the least desirable market for a business.

  • Thanks OP

  • +6

Are you sure this isn't a price error? :p

  • +3

All the eneloop orders made them recognize us finally. :)

In other news, loving my Chromecast I got from DSE sometime back. Thought I wouldn't need it or use it much, boy I was wrong.
    Netflix+Plex for all my movies
Photo sync for making the TV turn into a nice lcd gallery.

    • What do you use to get Netflix on the Chromecast? I find casting from a PC good, but using the iPhone app is a shitty experience.

      • +1

Been using the Android Netflix App. However, their recent update to the app blocked the re-routing we did through the router dns off Google's public dns, had to revert back to an older version of the app.

        http://help.unotelly.com/support/articles/199318-netflix-3-7…

        • Ah I see. I'm contemplating buying an Apple TV then and setting it up with Netflix. Might be a little easier to use that way.

  • +1

Well, ordered one. Waiting with baited :P breath!

    • +2

      $34 + delivery
US $31.66 (approx. AU $35.94) International Priority Shipping to Australia

    • +2

with $31.66 USD shipping? no thanks…

  • -2

Just got an email saying it was a pricing error…

    Just kidding!

  • Thx rep to compete with Amazon :)
Ordered via click and collect. Hope I get confirmation on collection shortly from Liverpool DS.

  • +1

I miss the dicksmith sale when it was $36 or was it $34

  • +1

Would love to take advantage if this deal with gift cards purchased during the promotional period but unfortunately I still do not have them. Very quick to try and take money very slow to help those who have paid for an item. Just to summarise have tried to call dick smith support 3 times and email 3 times. Be wary if you pay using pay pal they will take your money but you may not receive the goods.

  • Don't forget to use Velocity Store link to get 2 points p/dollar @ DSE!!

  • +1

Hi Rep, how come some stores sold the Emtec 32gb USB for $9.98 and other stores told customers they wouldn't give it to them after they had made their way to the store because it was a pricing error? Even though they had received an email confirming it was ready for collection.

  • +1

    normal $49 now $39/41?
    hmmm not so much disc.

  • Got it for $20.99 delivered, stacked the code with 2x ($10 for $5) gift cards that I bought few weeks back. Very happy =)

    • +2

If only my gift card I bought had arrived by now..

    • +6

      Wouldn't that make it $30.99?

      • You are correct. Total paid $20.99, plus $10 paid previously which make it $30.99

  • +1

omg i just ordered with amazon can i cancel?

    • Yes you can.
I just cancelled mine and ordered from DSE to use my gift card

  • As soon as I added the CHROME10 code it changed to "Out of stock"

    :(

    • +1

Me too, doing click and collect instead now.

      • +2

Sweet, I got one with click & collect. Paid via Paypal and will pick it up tonight.

        • If you're lucky.

A bunch of us had trouble with Paypal and click and collect. Currently my store has no idea of my order, and i havent received a confirmation email from Dick Smith.

Obviously they still requested my money and Paypal obliged.

So now I'm out $39 until I lodge a dispute with Paypal. Won't be using click and collect ever again thats for sure.

        • +1

@TOm77: I got an email just as I left work to say it was ready to pick up.
Got it on the way home and it's set up and streaming now :)

  • +1

Psst. Don't forget 2.3% cashback from StartHere.

And I still got a Chromecast in box that I received last week. Oh well.

  • Quite tempted to buy one but Chromecast lacks screen mirroring of your Android smartphone or Macbook. I know you can mirror your Chrome browser but I want to use it for mirroring my Samsung GS4 screen while playing GTA Vice city on it.

Has anybody got any feedback on the alternatives like Ezcast or Measy dongles?

    • What Android version are you running? It supports screen mirroring based on the Droid version you are running. I can mirror my Note 3 perfectly for example.

      • My GS4 is currently on Android 4.3 Jellybean. Been waiting for Kitkat update for a long time :(

    • +2

I mirror my Android devices all the time. Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) work (both on stock roms, KitKat)

  • +10

DSE have offered it for $34 on OzB before.

  • No more stock when ordering.

    • Try click & collect. Delivery is out of stock.

  • +2

    Waiting for it to be $35- again;

  • +4

This plus plex for Android is awesome. Replaced my htpc

    • Same, Plex is awesome, and Chromecast is the perfect little companion!

Waiting for the rep to offer us Kiwi's a deal!

  • +2

Standard Dick Smith T&C apply: All orders will be cancelled. Payments will be refunded within 12 months.

  • Looks like $5 extra item offer works with this
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/online-only-5-at-5?utm_source=Ex…

Best pick is the iPad case
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/simplism-ipad-flip-case-black-ds…

The discount was shown on the checkout page, but I did not follow through to completion as I bought the iPad case in an earlier deal.

  • After all that trying to buy one of these at Dick Smith, this offer comes up just after somebody tells me about 2nd gen Chromecast coming soon. Whether to wait or not - tough question.

  • Hi all, Sorry to bother but I'm a newbie to this. Can any member plplease guide this newbie as to how this can be setup to watch Netflix, hulu etc.I have adsl 2. Sorry person with no clue, seems like rocket science.thanks for your time and valuable assistance.cheers

    • +2

visit getflix.com.au and use the facebook like button to sign up for %15 off. Cheapest to pay for a year (about $30 I think). Then search for an online guide on setting up DNS redirect for your router. You'll need to know what brand and likely what model router you have.

      • is the playback choppy at all? any freeze ups? is the content at least 720p? on your normal optus cable connection

        • Netflix degrades quality rather than allow choppy playback or pauses (although it does happen very occasionally). So if network contention is really bad you might notice it drops to standard def or you get some compression artifacts.

  • Got it, but i think if a new version of chrome cast is coming soon :(

  • How is this more useful than a cheap android dongle? I don't get why in Australia you would get this over an android dongle. Am I missing something?
