Free Paywall Bypass Firefox or Chrome Add-Ons (The Age/SMH/The Australian/WSJ) and More

3131

Came across this add-on which helps me to bypass most of Paywall news since the incognito mode does not work for me anymore. Here are the a list of sites it can bypass from the add-on description:

The Age
The Australian
Baltimore Sun
Barron's
Crain's Chicago Business
Chicago Tribune
Daily Press
The Economist
Financial Times
Glassdoor
Haaretz
Hartford Courant
Harvard Business Review
Het Financieele Dagblad
Inc.com
Le Temps
Los Angeles Times
Medscape
MIT Technology Review
Nikkei Asian Review
NRC
The Courier Mail
The Morning Call
The Nation
The New York Times
The New Yorker
OrlandoSentinel
Quora
SunSentinel
The Seattle Times
The Sydney Morning Herald
The Telegraph
The Washington Post
The Wall Street Journal

  • It is recommended to use this add-on along with the adblocker 'uBlock Origin'
  • If WSJ stops working, goto options, uncheck WSJ, hit save, then re-check it, and hit save.

Bypass WSJ paywall was the original intention of this add-on.
Edit: It also works for other Chromium browsers (requires manual installation though) such as Chrome, Opera, etc. @ BypassPaywalls, thank BlueMM for this information.

Do people really pay to read the news online?

    • +29

I do. The Economist & FT do good work and keep me sane.
Their authors and staff surely have families to feed.

      • -8

Paying for fake news… Especially for Murdoch gangs' media who manuplates financials and politicians. They use also my community news to make money.

        • +8

But CNN is quality I assume? Murdoch Derangement Syndrome in full force.

        • +6

@Sabric wtf are you talking about? Economist & FT aren't News Corp publications.

        • -6

Just because your idol told you anything that you don't agree with is fake, doesn't make it fake. Go back to reading your highly intellectual, fact-based facebook/twitter feed.

        • +20

read multiple sources and learn to think for yourself, every source is biased in some way.

      • +1

They get more from the advertisements like many other social media websites..

      • I pay for The Information. I've found their reporting to be unparalleled.

    • +6

I pay for ABC News via my taxes, also support the conversation.

    • -1

Yes, how else do you expect journalists to make an income?

    • Good Q.

      Some do, to support Journo's
If we don't, commercial interests will
further basing the news we get…

PS Do any Aussie news rags
Ever cover the Future of Nuclear Energy, ie:

      Safe, Small, LIQUID FUEL
      (ie, No Costly+Wasteful Fuel Rods)
      MOLTEN SALT REACTORS (MSR)
      …due ~2025?

      (Eg, IMSR from CA;
      WAMSR from MIT-based TransAtomic Power;
ThorCon from ThorCon Power in Indonesia & Florida)

      PS:

Oh, the latest "next big thing"
may be the STABLE SALT REACTOR (SSR),
      (from the UK).

why not just use in private browsing when you hit the limit?

    • +6

Because some sites are subscriber only and don't offer free limits.

  • +1

Is the one for Chrome still available?

    • +7

Looks like it, on their website: BYPASS PAYWALLS
      Requires manual installation.

      • thanks!

        • +1

file doesn't even unzip for me..

        • +6

@Xizor: change the extension from .crx to zip, unzip it, go to chrome - type chrome://extensions - load unpacked extension, choose the unzip folder and done

        • +4

Haha yes thanks mate i can read the instructions but it will not unzip. Just installed windows 10 recently so perhaps the default unzipper is crap, i'll get 7zip or something

        • +11

@Xizor: The instructions were incorrect. I had the same problem. You need to rename it to a .rar file then 7zip will unzip it.

        • +1

          @Xizor:

7zip extracts it, without even extension change.

        • +4

          @thydzik:

or you can use online extractor if you're browsing from work computer that prevents you from installing third-party software :)

        • @suwandy:

tried this method, works for me

        • @suwandy:

          It says page not found

        • @Xizor: No luck with Chrome either and have followed above instructions. When I try I get:

          Error loading extension.
Failed to load extension from: ~\Downloads\BallardAppCraftery.RARViewer_epyrqhfctk40t!App\bypass_paywalls_chrome
Manifest file is missing or unreadable.

        • @Xizor: rename to .rar - worked for me

        • +1

          @lberation:

noth zip and rar not working for me, after I try to open them I get a not a valid archive and the an empty zip file

        • @Baghern:

          Try redownloading

        • +1

          @Baghern:

I changed to .rar, and then was able to open with 7-Zip. Hope this helps.

        • @Confused1: I think I screwed up on the Markdown syntax … Anyway here it is crxextractor.com

Clearing cache and history does the trick

    • +1

I assume you'd only need to clear cookies, and maybe cache. You can do so for any given site by pressing the https:// in the url bar (chrome)

      • or use incognito windows

      • Good tip but this method doesn't work on http sites like The Age.

I use this extension for clearing cookies/HTML5 local storage:
        https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/localstorage-monit…

        • Private browsing window works for The Age for me. Read it every day.

        • @bmerigan: Based on the description on the deal they are implementing work arounds to Private browsing window mode.

But if it works for you then keep doing what you are doing I suppose.

  • +11

Is this a bargain or should it be a forum entry?

    • +2

      Seems like piracy to me….

  • +4

Great post. Thanks for sharing. Wonder if anyone could bypass paywall for Stan, Foxtel ….

    • +1

      Done. It's called Channel BT

  • +1

Didn't work when I went to The Oz's front page - don't know if it's just me or if you need to access the articles using a direct link first?

  • +2

    Fantastic post. Thank you!

  • One trick you can do for some Aussie news sites is to Google the page title from the URL, that allows you to access subscriber articles.

  • +2

Just add a toolbar bookmark to Chrome with:

    javascript:window.location="https://m.facebook.com/l.php?u="+encodeURIComponent(window.location.href);

Then click it if you get paywalled. Works on most sites.

  • +20

I don't know, the fact a paywall stops me reading the Australian is a good thing :P

  • +1

Is there any version for Safari? From another developer perhaps?

    • +18

No, Apple users must always pay!

    • -1

Yes, just do what the rest of humanity does (around 95%,) and own PC and get the right kind of browser.

  • +2

Do we have reminders on OZB so I can get home and install this? e.g !Remind Me 12hours

    • +4

there's a reminder button on every deal

      • You are a legend! never noticed it! thanks so much :)

  • Tested this on The Australian. By passed.

  • +1

    Thanks op! Awesome app.
Am doing a bit of jobhunting, the glassdoor bypass especially comes at a perfect time for me.

  • Is there one for Google Chrome?

    • +1

Yes, but you need to install it manually, follow instructions posted by BlueMM

      • Thanks HVN for providing the bypass.
Do I install the .JS file/ folder in the Firefox directory.
Firefox does not allow the installation as an extension/ addon from the browser directly. Says the .js is corrupt.
        Any advice would be appreciated.
        Andy

Hmm.. an extension with less than 2000 downloads and 20 reviews and has permission to access all data from every website I view…

    Pass for now

I pay for AFR subscription $800 a year but I probably make 80K a year out of investment
I don't mind paying for AFR or investment related information

    • How do u make 80K from investments? Shares?

      • Yeah stock market

        • -1

So u can tax deduct the $800 anyway.
But why spend when u don't have to.

        • +4

          @sintro:

what you doing technically close to stealing and highly immoral
people work hard to produce contents and they want people to pay for it and that why a paywall

do you want to go to work and work for free or you work for a business that paid
your salary and people not paying for their goods?

        • +1

          @Hearthstone:

what you doing technically close to stealing and highly immoral

I'm not sure why you are using "you" as if you know what I do or don't do.

          Really $800 is a steal.

        • @Hearthstone:
Too many entitled people here. Must think news from these sites are by volunteers

      • +5

I think it's a typo and he meant he's $80k out on a particular investment vehicle
        =P

        • +2

at least the meme goes up in value over time

  • I must admit I'm a sucker for some of the the Australian headlines.

Though I've never even attempted to circumvent… So obviously I don't care.

    Will give this a go

  • Thanks hvn, you're the real MVP.

  • thank you, much appreciated.

  • What i tend to do is simply right click on the "premium subscriber only" article i want to read and choose "search google for xxxxx" then the article tends to open from the search result bypassing the block - but this is cool too.

    • +2

      That's going away.

  • I tried this, but it just doesn't work.
I get the prompt to follow the Facebook link, but the page that reloads is the same and not the full content.

  • Thanks man, my wife will love me more after this hack

  • I wrote a bypass for The Age once, it was working fine for years, then earlier this year Google removed the extension from the Chrome store :(

    • I just clear my cookies every week or two.

  • Thanks OP.

  • +2

Do these work on the mobile version of Chrome (Android)?

  • There is no way to get this work on android phone?

    • It works well on my Android with Firefox mobile.

      • Care to explain further on what needs to be done? I have Firefox as well on my phone.

        • You just need to install this Add-on similar to on your Desktop browser. I also installed 'Ublock origin' add-on according to dev's recommendation.

  • +1

Does it also remove the notice The Guardian displays which keeps making me feel guilty?

    • +2

If you're an Ozbargain member you shouldn't have a conscience.

    • +1

The Guardian displays which keeps making me feel guilty

Guardian articles are designed to make you feel guilty

  • +3

    This add-on can:

Access your data for all websites

    NO thanks.

  • +1

Place '$' before the url to bypass any paywall.

    For instance:

    • Doesn't work on Chrome as it automatically goes to google search and suggests the website.
Are you using Firefox or IE?

      • +1

Click the top link that it redirects you to. Should come up in a cached format, if not the original.

  • for some reason the Australians is not working flawlessly for me.
