I don't get how they are selling them for this price? I guess they are not paying any GST otherwise they wouldn't be making any profit?

    • in Asia (Hong kong) selling them around $700

      • Are they easy to get? I can get my uncle to send me one

        • I think so

        • +6

Can I be your cousin? I need an uncle to send me one too

          • +17

@DDman7: I don't think you want that. I picked him and my mum from the airport, dropped mum off and went back to my place. First thing he said was, "want a ciggie" and I was like ok. He finished it and asked if I wanted another, he is my elder so I was like yeah ok. We took his stuff inside and showed him around the house. Went to backyard and showed him my workshop i still haven't finished. He had another ciggie and passed me one. We we just talking about how land is so much bigger here and other random shit. Probably had 5 ciggies in the backyard. My head was spinning like crazy. Then he said. "let's go outside for one before bed so we go have another one which turns into 2. I almost yakked. Lucky he quit drinking otherwise I would've passed out.

Then there's the casino thing. He was only here for 2 days. I felt like I was going to die. Fun guy though, my ex and I call him my "funcle".

        Model HKD AUD
        64GB $3,288 ~$600
        256GB $4,388 ~$800
        512GB $5,488 ~$1,000
        • lol, who said it's around $700! However, I guess grey imports can go as low as that, and there are lots of them in HK.

    • It could theoretically be held at customs, if GST has not been paid. I don't know how often that occurs.

      • i thought under 1k no gst

        • +6

That stopped like 5-6 years ago now.

        • +9

Yeah. Thank that grub Gerry Harvey for that. He lobbied the government to implement gst for all overseas purchases.

He is crying poor that people are buying from overseas despite HN pocketing the pandemic relief funds and they posting record profits.

@xoom: There's a four letter word that best describes him. Starts with C and rhymes with hunt.

      • ask uncle to open it and throw away the packaging?

  • I've been itching to buy this just to play F1 Manager. Is it worth paying extra for the 512? I read that the screen is different.

    • +6

Depends on your usage. If you play in environments with sunlight/glare, potentially. There are plenty of videos comparing on youtube if you want a more detailed answer.

Personally, I will be playing mainly indoors so I didn't feel the premium was worth it. I went with the base model and a 512GB SSD.

      • +1

        Thanks fo the info

      • +1

Which SSD did you grab? I am struggling to choose.

        • +1

search previous thread on ozbargain about steam deck, in the comments has mentioned about the SSD

        • BC711

    • +1

The 512 just has an anti-glare finish. I can't say if its worth the extra to you. Are you planning to play a lot in bright sunshine.

      • +8

Nah I don't like the sun

      • +2

Can I buy a cheaper model and install an anti glare screen protector for get similar functionality.

        • Quick search shows you can buy a anti glare screen for 100 Euros…….

        • I think I'll just get the base model sent from HK

    • +1

yeah if you are just playing indoors, i dont see the point of the matte screen.

i have a 256 and 1tb sd card and have been had no regrets

      • +1

I'll stick with the cheapest model because I only want to play one game lol

    • +1

I heard you can get the antiglare effect by buying a screen protector. Don't quote me though

    • +1

iFixit sells both versions of the screen with the required cable attached which makes them interchangeable. Upside is it's possible to just swap out to the anti glare screen, downside is it's not available on the iFixit Australia website yet.

Also the slim chance someone makes an OLED screen for the steam deck and you upgrade to that down the track - but there's no news of anyone developing one, just the possibility that it could exist.

  • Has anyone got a dock with power passthrough going? I can see it only has 1 x USB-C that serves as power delivery too?

    • +1

I can see it only has 1 x USB-C that serves as power delivery too?

      Correct.

    • +1

There's dozens of third party docks which are, arguably, better than the official.

Most tech sites I read reckon the iVoler one is the best all rounder.
I've got it but haven't plugged it in yet.

    • I connected my USB-C dock and have connected charger, ethernet and ps5 controller all at once with no issue. Whilst playing MW2 on Windows 10

  • +1

    damn it's OOS :(

  • Does this play new pc games or do they have to be of a certain age to be playable?

    • +4

Google it. There is a list of games. Dead Space just got verified.

    • +3

It plays the vast majority of them. That new Hogwarts game runs okay at medium settings with the display at 40fps.

      • 40fps :(

        • +1

40fps is fine if you set the screen to 40hz. no stuttering/frame pacing issues.

        • Nothing wrong with 40 fps

  • +1

Get the 64GB and upgrade SSD to 1TB. Works out cheaper this way.

    • -3

      Not an NVME SSD though

      • Nvme SSD.

        • -2

          Slower load speeds

          • +7

@jakeh87: What are you on about? Google crystaldiskmark for Steam Deck with 1TB nvme ssd drives.

256GB is a waste of money unless you really want that 256GB SSD to used somewhere else.

I feel like steam deck pro must be just around the corner …

It's pretty shite that even with Australia tax, valve can't be arsed selling it here. Isn't it almost two years old now?

    • +7

They've said an upgrade wouldn't have a perfomance boost with a new model. A screen and battery life improvement only.

    • +2

Nah I think it's only just turned one.
Valve also mentioned that it's unlikely you'll be getting any performance upgrades in the next model, so I'd imagine it'd likely just be OLED + battery improvements. Depends if waiting is worthwhile to you!

      • OLED would be awesome. I am waiting for it…

      • With how Valve are with user upgrades/repairs, I'm hoping the pro version's parts will be backwards compatible. I can see them offering an upgrade pack for people's current steam deck to upgrade those parts which is what I'm hopeful for.

        • I doubt it.
They would want you to buy another one

    • +2

Valve never sells directly to Australia. They don't like us ever since ACCC forced them to add a refund policy. They will sometimes sell through a 3rd party like when EB Games carried Steamlinks but they don't want to be seen as doing business in Australia where possible.

      • Oh is that why…

Wow I don’t like them after reading that

  • +1

Anyone report on what it's like playing detailed games on such a small screen? Do you feel like ita hard to pick up detail that would otherwise be noticeable on a larger screen? Or does the fact that it's closer to your eyes negate this?

    • Depends a lot on the game from my opinion.

Like, recently playing the Witcher 3 and, depending on how tired I am, I might struggle to read some of the text from notes/books etc.

Otherwise, if you had a game in mind, just search for it on https://www.protondb.com/ and you'll get heaps of info about the playability.

      • Sweet thanks for the insight and the link! Very tempted to buy the deck. Was waiting for a switch to come on sale but thinking the deck will be the way

    • Well yeah, you probably don't want to play Hell Let Loose, ARMA or other online military FPS on it. Everything else should be fun enough that doesn't need that keyboard and mouse advantage (ie. Other esport genes)

  • ordered the 64GB one… and a WD1TB. Can't wait. I wonder where they're getting stock from and how they plan to honour warranties?

  • It's back in stock this morning.

  • Has anyone dealt with vchain in the past? I've had "ready for processing" from auspost for about 5 days now.

edit: based on whirlpool and some googling, this is either normal for them or I'll never get my package.

    • 5 days from generating the label (kogan saying it was shipped) to Auspost actually taking receipt of the package.

  • +1

Received my steam deck this morning. Ordered on the 9th and received on the 15th. Everything was unopened, working and in new condition.
