Things to do in Sydney?

Travelling to Sydney for 5 days and need some ideas on things to do.
Been to Sydney before and mainly used the monorail to get around but it's getting pulled down and won't be in operation when I go so maybe some tips on transport as well please.
Will be staying on Darling Habour at Novotel and will be 2 Adults and 1 Teenager (15)
Thanks in advance for help :)

Shattered I won't be there at that time :( thanks though! Is it a annual event? I could possibly go next year.

      • yep, annual event. it's packed every year, every where

  • I loved riding the monorail as a visitor to Sydney, why are they taking it down?

    • Me to :( was such a good way to get around the city as a visitor, I'm not entirely sure on the reason but I have read that they sold the light rail and monorail to another company and that they will be replacing it with all light rail. Here's the official "Farewell Sydney Monorail" site http://www.monorail.com.au/ once dismantled they will be auctioning off the parts of it.

they are taking it down because it cost more money to maintain than it was making.
The monorail is so old that they don't even produce parts for it and they have to be custom ordered at very high prices.

It cost too much for the distance it travelled.

(I used to work for lightrail/monorail)

      • Thanks been trying to find out the reason for awhile, sad to see it go.

There is a free sydney bus just around the cbd. Then there are the explorer buses which go out further which cost money. Also if you buy a cityrail multiday pass then you can use it for buses, trains, light rail and government ferries all day. That way you can catch Sydney ferries to Zoo, Manly and other harbour places. Sydney also has Luna Park and Paddys Market. Lots of shops in heart of Sydney. Also you can walk around Darling Harbour to other places as there are nice walking tracks around the city. Maritime Museum is at Darling Harbour, also the aquarium. The Opera House and Botanic Gardens are interesting. I have just looked at sydney.com.au which seems to be quite a good guide of things to do - will get around to it myself one day. The comedy festival is on for a month at the moment.

    • Awesome I didn't know about the free bus, thanks for your reply.

Here are just a few suggestions. There is so much to do.

If your not sure my suggestion would be to go to the visitor information centres. There is one in darling harbour and the rocks. At the very least you will get some good maps of Sydney to help you get around.

Walk across the Sydney harbour bridge and if interested in a better view go up the pylon lookout.

A cruise around Sydney harbour from circular key is very nice.

    Some transport links

Both walking around circular key, the rocks and darling harbour are lovely.

If your interested in a day trip out of Sydney the blue mountains are great.

    • Good tips, specially the harbour cruise. It's what Sydney is famous for, gotta do it - 3 of us took a scenic trip with a water taxi from Darling Harbour, was terrific and probably cheaper than Captain Cook cruises.

Sydney is notoriously expensive for just about everything! I highly recommend getting your hands on the Sydney edition of the Entertainment Book before you leave. Although it's $65 you will quickly get your money back with meals and activities plus some, it will provide you with some ideas as well.

    • Wow thanks for all the links really appreciate it :)
