  • you'll pay nearly that price for the chain whip alone at your LBS

  • I have no experience with this kit from UNION, but I do own a similar boxed kit that doesn't include the chain whip. The quality of the tools in my set were so-so but they get the job done. Good enough for the home mechanic, I reckon. IMHO

My kit was one of the "Fluid" branded ones from Anaconda. Snagged it for $20 during one of their sales.

I have bought similar cone wrenches and they are almost useless, they will deform on first use. Probably same with the pedal wrench, stupid multi-size crap just doesn't have enough purchase.

Steel tyre levers are not a good idea on alloy rims, if your tyre is a tight fit you'll likely damage the rim.

Chain-whip, bottom bracket tools, allen keys, spoke key and chain breaker probably make it worth it though.

For comparison, similar kits are way more elsewhere:

    $69 http://www.bikes.com.au/p/520820/bike-hand-prontool-bicycle-…

    • I was eying this kit for the bottom bracket tool - meanwhile I have a Parktool BB HTII tool ($26) waiting in a shopping basket at another site. Hmmmmmm….

      • Yeah, I'd get the Park. This seems to be missing the little plastic thing to take off the non-drive side crank arm for HTII BBs

        • You mean a bread knife?
My HT2 BB tool (Pedros?) doesn't have a socket for the NDS screw cap thing. I've survived without.

Seems like a good deal for a standard kind of cheap bike tool bits. Good enough to get you started; if you start noticing any damage on any tools, throw them away before they start damaging your bike. Having worn out a cheap tool, you've justified the cost of a better quality replacement. Things that you don't wear out… the cheap one is obviously adequate.

    • yep, steel tyre levers are the devil on decent wheel sets, makes me cry

i have no idea what half of these tools are for but i want one

I have this set. the metal is soft. ok for occasional use only. (so far the chain breaker has broken, and the cassette lock-ring tool is mashed)
if you are doing lots of maintenance, just buy the 5-6 individual tools you actually need

I won't neg, but just my experience.
