    or $410 on expedia.com.br :D

    • how do you change it into english?

      • Google Chrome's built in translator :)

        • Thanks, good idea!

    • whats the best way to convert?

Got $405 for same in Sep. Dates Sep 13-20. QF direct ~838 BRL (405 AUD). expedia.com.br

I'm finding this website as a good way to hunt around:
      http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm

Gives you the 'travel agent' string which you can e-mail to other travel agents to see if they can book that fare for you.

      i.e.
Fare construction (can be useful to travel agents)

Hi Amaslam, thanks heaps for the tip.

I've found the cheapest tickets possible by putting the sales City as Rio,Brazil, as mentioned below by Fishy. Would local agents accept that? And who is the best to contact from your experience?
        Flight Centre, STA or others?

        • I haven't tried yet for International (only expedia.co.jp for Jetstar domenstic which works wonders). But I prefer bestflights.com.au as a regular agent for the last 5 years. Local agents might accept it but the only way is to try it. Or you could just book on expedia.com.br. Basically once you get the booking reference (the 5 letters and numbers) it's your ticket. You can then see it on qantas.com.au in your bookings.

By having the 'travel agent' string a good agent should try to match it. Perhaps their systems may not allow skipping the 'fuel surcharge' but expedia is a legit website so if it doesn't add this charge I don't see how it's your fault.

        • +1

Thanks heaps Amaslam. i'll need to sign up a 28 Degrees card now.
I just can't live without you ozbargainers!

        • +1

An Australian travel agent can't sell these tickets at this price - that's why the sales city is Rio. These tickets must be sold by an entity in Brazil but not necessarily to a person residing in Brazil.

        • +1

          understood now. thanks Madge.

  • Just a question, why use the 28 degrees card? Are there other options to get these cheap prices?

    • +3

They don't charge any international transaction fees.

      • is there any other way around it if you dont have one?

        • +3

yes, by using your citibank plus visa debit card, or your bankwest platinum zero mastercard.

        • +2

You can pay anyway you want… But the 28degrees will save you foreign transaction fee's and give you better exchange rates.

Without a 28 degrees card, you'll be paying an extra $5 to $50 depending on how much your bank hates you.

(tl;dr - Yes, can pay with any card you like, however your bank may have surcharges for foreign transactions)

        • +1

If people needed a tl;dr for this, well….

        • Mate… Thanks for mentioning this! I've been buying bits of stuff from abroad over the last few years… And they all add up. Could've saved a few tens of dollars there.

Didn't know Citi debit have zero overseas purchase fees. Thought it was only 28 deg that offered this. Been using my ING direct all along. Well I guess at least those fees were partially offset by the 5% paywave promo. Can't get a credit card just yet - still studying :P

        • Meh. Citibank sounds a bit dodgy going back to the thread below. And their exchange rate is not the actual visa rate, so they do take a cut from the transaction even though there is no actual overseas purchase fee. Probs should look into the 28 degrees card.

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61969?page=1#comment-735160

        • +2

That's wrong, I have the Citibank Plus account and the rate is directly from Visa there are no fees or commission factored into the exchage rate (http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_services/consumer_ex_r…), in other words your getting the wholesale market rate!

        • Hmm okay cheers, I'll do a bit more reading into this. It's just that the previous thread has been going back and forth about this between the posters so somehow I was led to the belief that their rates are different to the visa rates ;)

        • From whirlpool and the Aus ff forums it appears that the disparity between the 28 degree card and the Citibank plus is due to exchange rates from MC and visa. The former converts to USD before converting to anything else. Someone pointed out that there seems to be a little spread for Citibank exchange rates (is this true?) but there should be no fees/commission when using this card overseas. So it's all good now. Thanks for the help :)

  • +3

Why is it cheaper in expedia.com.br mentioned by Fishy?

    • -1

taxes, fees etc isn't as high when u use com.br (correct me if im wrong)

  • Tiger airways is doing PERTH > SING for around $169-190
    from A$169.66# 01 Jul 13 - 30 Nov 13

Jetstar is doing around 180ish too just checked

  • hi guys, really dumb newbie here…

from what I am reading from these comments, we can purchase tickets from this foreign".BR" site and use a Citibank plus Debit card (which I have) and the tickets will possibly be cheaper than the ".AU" expedia site? and assuming we are able to get the tickets hundreds of dollars (there are 5 of us) on the ".BR" website…. we wont encounter any problems while checking into the flight in an Australian airport?

any chance they will say.."ooops you are not allowed to purchase from so and so ".BR" website so you now have to pay extra fees if you want to board this flight" ??

    thanks!

    • +3

You want have any problems so long as you are booking through a legitimate (not fraudulent) website. All Expedia sites will be fine.

    • +2

I have booked jetstar through Japanese expedia and I get sent a jetstar booking reference.

      That's all I need.

Ps. I am fairly sure that Aussie expedia is also 'foreign'.'

    • +1

The expedia.br website is not collecting the 'fuel surcharge' which is $AUD 350 … will you have a problem, maybe, maybe not. The official fare and ancillary charges have not been collected and although its unlikely QF would argue the toss at check-in what are you going to do if they do call you on it?

      • +1

Qantas wouldn't go after the passenger for this money. They issue a bill (ADM in airline lingo) to Expedia which comes out of their account automatically. That is if they even pick up on it at all.

        • I am aware of ADM's .. I've had my share over the past 25 years. As I said its unlikely QF would go after the passenger but don't rule it out. Always have a 'plan b'. You book these fares at your own risk. In this case QF wouldn't be able to ADM expedia.br as the Brazilian govt prohibits the collection of additional carrier based fees such as fuel surcharge.

        • If you get bounced at the counter what kind of plan B can anyone have?

  • As you guys can probably tell from my above posts, i'm also a newbie. I'm trying to find flights to phuket as cheap as possible, whether that involves a stopover at singapore, i dont mind. I just cant seem to work it all out. I was hoping for a late flight on the 23rd July. I'm not sure if i've been converting right and what not. I'd return from phuket on the 3rd August to sydney. If anyone can help, that would be great. I've been trying to sort this out for the last hour. lol.

It's not that i'm not reading it, it's just i cant figure it all out. If anyone is a pro on the expedia.ie and expedia.com.br sites, please link me up.

    • If you are a newbie with online travel bookings then probably best to stick to the simple approach.

SYD-Phuket with Scoot all on one website flyscoot.com will set you back about $650 with baggage but no food or entertainment. This option also gives you a night in Singapore on the way over.

    • +6

Sites like *Expedia suck? You hate bargains? Poor you

      • they do, and the one i used cheaptickets.com would increase prices after a few searches on the same flight… ull get better deals going to the air lines,… i used to use 3rd party sites before, not anymore.. its like using webjet when jetsstar site are cheaper..

there are the odd exception ofcourse like an error and what not.

in any event i wouldnt ever be able to get a return trip from adelaide to macedonia for under $1500 during summer in europe ever,, i only managed it by bypassing these sites which boarder on scams imo…

        • In general I'll agree that booking with the carrier direct is better. But with sales, online TA's can bring up brilliant bargains!

        • -1

I guess point is to try both and pick the best one at the time.

        • +2

You're contradicting yourself. Expedia is the better one in this case versus booking directly with Qantas.

I don't get why you'd waste my bandwidth by making me load your incomprehensible comments. Then again for lulz and troll.

    • What's returne?

      • new english version of return ;)

        • I like dropoff for one way.

  • +1

Normally I'd agree with T1000, I can never understand why people would use Expedia over the airlines website when the price is the same or cheaper directly with the airline BUT in this case due to a marketing/pricing "error" the OS Expedia sites here are much cheaper…

    • It depends.
If you're signed up to a cashback website, you can easier get back 2-3% of the total flight price back, which would make it a little bit cheaper if you're willing to wait 1-2 months for the money?

  • Ran the Melb-Sing deal through skyscanner.net and it gave me the same deal through bravofly.com qantas 414 euro return. Looks like they let you pay with paypal too. This may save on international card fees

    • +2

islandgirl.. u may want to do a google / tripadvisor search on bravofly before you use them.

    • +4

do not pay with paypal. they will pull down your pants, open your anus just a pinch, and proceed to screw with the largest obstacle they can find… just to hear you scream

  • -5

Disappointed to find out SIN is not Sin City..

    • -1

No Frank Miller fans here.. moving on then

  • What are good months to visit singapore, ie weather, international evets etc ?

    • It's always hot and sticky in Singapore.

      • Singapore does Christmas like no bodies business. Go In Dec or first week of Jan. Check out all the decorations.

    • I like going at the end of the year (Nov/Dec) mostly because its the rainy season so it's not so hot. I find it less humid too (odd thing to say since it's the rainy season) mostly because I think the humidity in the air is regularly rained down so it's not as uncomfortable as the dry season in the middle of the year where its really humid but not humid enough to rain.

In general, it'll be hot and humid all year round but end of year period is not as hot or humid compared to the mid year.

    • +1

Well if you are true ozbargainer, hard to resist a sale right.

      http://www.greatsingaporesale.com.sg/2013/home/index.html

Combine the shopping and the food and it's a great place to visit for a few days.

      • oh my goodness. Where did you find this? O_O I'm going to singapore in Dec and this is epic!

Edit: It's only Mid year?! bleah.

    • I would say September 20-23rd would be a good weekend to visit (if you like F1 that is)

  • +1

    Insane.
Sydney to Singapore, 19 June to July 3 (school holiday time) = $391 AUD return.
DAMN that's cheap. What to do in singapore with a two toddlers?…

    • where are you getting $391 from?

      • +1

        expedia.com.br. 831 brazilian real.
Funnily enough just searching identical dates half an hour later and it's now $400
Unless that's the google exchange rate moving around.

    • edit: looks like answered :p

      • edit: seen above :)

    • go to the new universal studio singapore, or the zoo or the bird park, kids love them, usually…

  • eat

Anyone been to sentosa island? Looks pretty nice.

Also just used Expedia.com.br to check out LAX to Syd return in August for the mother in law - $650 return.
    Yowsers

    • how come it doesn't work when you wanna fly from syd to lax for the same price? it's nearly double of that lax to syd.

    • +1

We just got back from SIN purchasing flights through a previous qantas sale via Expedia brazil. Flights were 890 return for two for the end of April. Sentosa is a nice spot however we found it quite expensive and very busy. The hotels are pretty new and quite nice. Would recommend staying there a few days, but take a fair bit of cash.

If you go to universal studios and pay with a 28 degrees card ( or any other MasterCard) you get 15% off the tickets!! The monorail in the island is also free, we only found out on the last day.

Definitely worth going to, especially if you have kids.

  • Dont forget Bangkok for about $500 too.

    • +1

When's that? Not a bad price, but I find closer to $800 on expedia BR.

      • +4

Lots available in August ie august 2 back august 8.

The best way to see availability is to use ITA

        http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

I usually choose 'See calendar of lowest fares'

Then at sales city, enter one of brazilian cities like Rio or something.

You can also put AUD as currency then the price you see will exclude expedia booking fee of around $50 or something.

        • OMG, that site needs to go into the WIKI.

        • Hey Fishy,
Could you tell me what should my next step be once you've found the tickets you want from ITA?
Is is like what Amaslam has mentioned above, jot down your flight details and purchase the tickets from your local travel agents? What if you put Sales City as Rio,Brazil? Would your local agents accept that?

        • I believe local agents wont be able to do it. You have to book online. As far as I remember, there is a condition that the fares cannot be sold in Australia or something like if sold in Australia (and other countries) taxes have to be added.

        • Thanks very much your prompt reply. Would you recommend any good sites to book the tickets?

        • +1

We are talking about expedia.com.br here. there are other brazilian websites but you might have trouble as some of them require a brazilian credit card or cpf number. expedia might be a little bit more expensive (like $10 - $30) but quite reliable.

        • +1

Thanks heaps Fishy.I'll give it a shot. And i also need to sign up a 28 Degrees card.
I just can't live without you ozbargainers!

  • +1

Just took the plunge on the Brazil site. A$1100 return flights to Singapore in October using 28 degrees for two adults and one child. Hopefully they don't sting me for any more fees as discussed above. But the site and terms and conditions say that it includes all non optional fees.

Thanks for the post and the tip from Fishy!!

    • +1

We need to thank Ozbargain. The info I posted is from previous deals :)

    • +1

Let us know if you get contacted! I'm thinking of booking a few flights, I just can't see how Qantas allows this loophole to happen.

      • +1

I accessed the booked flights on the Qantas website and also selected my seats. So hopefully no problems with them.

  • +3

If anyone has problems with these fares (ie cancelled flights or being asked for more money), they should report it in the General discussion forum rather than only in this thread. There are too many of these deal threads and other ozbargainers may miss out on any cautions.

  • Has anyone actually flown on one of these expedia.com.br fares? Planning a bucks weekend in Asia for July and this is definitely a great price, but don't really want to get stung for the surcharges later down the track…
    Any first hand experience?

    • +4

I flew to Bangkok last week using .br no problem at all.

      • +1

Thanks very much. Time to rally the boys!

  • +2

Just booked flights from Melbourne to Singapore for $367 return. Thanks OP!

    • On QF, what dates?

      • Departing in mid-June and arriving at the end of August. Just need to play around with the dates and look for the cheapest ones.

        • Cheapest I'm able to find is ~$400, but good for you if you got it ;(

        • +5

It might have cost $367, but if you depart mid June and arrive at the end of August I'm pretty sure you'll be travelling on a boat ;)

  • i booked honeymoon to phuket for $900 during last Qantas sale… now via expedia.com.br it's $480 :(

    • Where? What dates?

  • +1

I booked expedia.com.br to singapore 8/11/13 to 14/12/13 return and it set me back R830 =~ $400 AUD.

There are still a few QANTAS flights leaving around december 5th or less in that sort of price range.

I got my qantas booking number and have put it into my frequent flyer account to manage it so I guess it's legit.

    • If it's in your bookings after you login with the FF I'm sure it's legit.

I've had great success with expedia.co.jp for the Jetstar domestic flights so I would expect the same from expedia.com.br

  • +8

what also needs to be factored in by OzBargainers is that these Qantas flights earn decent frequent flyer points (where budget carriers AirAsia/Scoot/Jetstar don't).
A trip to BKK gets 9368 FF points
A trip to SIN gets 7816 FF points

A Woolworths $50 wish card is only 7250 points.

Therefore, the effective price of booking is another $50 less than what you pay, when comparing against budget carriers

This will bring your $400 SIN flight down to $350 net. Happy days.

    • +1

True ozbargain full life cycle rationale. Love it.
As opposed to the crazy in laws who spend more on petrol driving to get cheap petrol than they save by getting cheap petrol…

    • So do we get FF points if we booked through expedia and then added it to our QANTAS itinerary ?

      • yup! if its not automatically added to your QFF, just go to Manage Your Booking and add it manually.

        • Hey… I haven't used QFF before. Should the points show up straight away or only once you've flown? Cheers.

        • +1

Only once you've flown, can even be a little wait. Though if you put your QFF number in the expedia frequent flyer program section, you should see the booking in your QFF account when you log in
