Sony MDR-V55R Headphones Officeworks $89 RRP $149.95

50

Been looking for some decent headphones for around $100. Was also looking at a pair of akg k451s but can't find anywhere that sells them for less than $100. Anyway these V55s are suppose to be decent.

  • good find. not too comfy to wear but sound quality is decent.
and it keeps the ears warm in winter :D

  • Are these on ear or over ear?

    • I think they're on ear. Just got home and I'm using them now. Happy to say they're much much better than the $8.95 MDR-MA100s I got from DSE last week. The V55s are much louder at the same volume, with less distortion and a lot less muffled sounding. Just need to wait for a DAC/AMP to go on sale now :D

  • Not the cheapest since dicksmith was sell these for $69 the week before when they was having 40% off Sony headphones.also Harvey Norman had these for $79 the same week as the dicksmith sale.

    • bummer… $69 would have been an excellent buy

  • really hate to do this but, you could have gotten a extremely sweet pair of AD700s for about $110 from a few places (amazon USA, kogan, gagdet bliss), although one might be hesitant about wearing them in public as they're HUGE and the color scheme is just awful. But looking like an idiot is a small price to pay for some superb audio quality at an incredible price.

And as others have mentioned, these have been way cheaper in the past, but IMHO still not particularly worth it even at those prices.

    • The AD700's are great headphones, but I can't say I'd ever recommend them for public use. Firstly the design doesn't lend itself to it as you noted. Secondly, being open headphones they are going to let in basically any background noise there is. You can crank the volume, but then you're just damaging your ears.

Theres much better options for on the go public use both in terms of physical design as well as being designed to isolate noise. AD700's are something I'd recommend for home use, get a closed pair if you want to be mobile in an area with a lot of noise (or IEMs).

  • Spent a night with the V55s and I'm pretty happy with them. The bass is very good, and this is with a totally flat EQ. I'm plugged into a lexicon alpha. TBH, I can't really tell the difference from my creative recon 3di soundcard other than it's much much louder when plugged into the alpha. I'm considering buying another pair of V55s for the Mrs as she really like them, but might consider spending the extra $30 on the AD700s from Kogan.

As a follow up I ended up getting something for the Mrs. I looked at the AD700s but didn't really like the look/design of them, this then led me to the AT M50, which I'm led to believe are pretty decent for the price. Unfortunately the cheapest I could find them for was $126 delivered, so I looked a bit harder and apparently people compare the AT M50s to the Sony V6s.

Did a bit of research and decided to go with the V6s and ordered them for $78 delivered from Amazon. There's cheaper fake looking ones from HK on ebay, but I'm not gonna bother as it's not a massive amount of difference in price.

      • I have both AD700 and M50s. While they're both almost universally praised, they're also completely different beasts.
AD700 is open, the M50 is closed.

Yes the AD700s are awful to look at, but IMHO the sound is superb (and almost completely better than the M50s, which few people agree with) and it's incredible value in terms of sound quality to money spent. The AD700 are also incredibly comfortable, I've worn them for 20 hours straight without any discomfort.

M50s are also pretty comfortable but due to their closed design, they can be uncomfortable during hot days and they also start to get slightly uncomfortable at about 14 straight hours of wearing them, bass is more pronounced on the M50s compared to the AD700s but that's about the only thing for me that the M50s do better than the AD700s.

They both also come with about 3 metres of cord, which can be good or bad depending on situation.
There's plenty more info over at sites like head-fi, and there's a few experts on ozb as well but they don't seem to be around atm.
