Awaits the obligatory comment hurling abuse due to mistaking them for ShoppingSquare. ;)

    • +1

Uhuh, nearly every one of SE threads in recent history has this element :)

    • +5

lol…if there isn't one in this deal - you will get a medal stewy.

      • +5

This is such a shit store. Never buy from them. I bought a mobile phone and they sent me a non mobile phone instead. I bought a horse and they sent me a camel. I ordered an Airbus and they sent me a boeing. Sorry I had to. Didnt want StewBalls to get a medal. :p

For every one reading, Shopping Express is a great store. The above comment was just for humor

        • +3

Lucky I didn't get a medal anyway, then I'd need a chest to pin it on…

Come on rep, how about removing the hard drive on the N40L model and offering free delivery?

This offering seems like a carbon copy of the previous microserver deal, how about spicing it up a bit more by a few more distinguishing aspects :)

    • lol, on the contrary - removing the hard drive will bring the cost of this product up. :)

      • +1

I would say this is contrary to your own regular selling prices :)

        N40L with hard drive $255
        N40L without hard drive $229

So the price goes down by $26 from your own price list.

        • lol.. right - but that is why it (250Gb version) is a bargain? :)

        • N40L with hard drive is $255.
The rep says removing the hard drive increases the price.

But the rep sells N40L without the hard drive for $229. Rep, this is the bargain, isn't it?

        • +1

Yup it is - you might get confused by kearnsy's sense of humour - he was trying to point out to me we should sell the one with hard drive at lower price than the one without hard drive AT ALL times - due to my comment above :)

Today's deal: N40L with hard drive is $199 from $255 after applying coupon code: MICROSERVER-3

  • I love these guys, superb customer support !

A few HDDs to choose from for me:

    WD Caviar Red 2TB - $109 (MTBF 1M, 500GB or 1Tb platter, 150MB/s)
    Seagate SV35 1TB - $104 (MTBF 1.4M hours, 1Tb platter, 210MB/s)
    WD Caviar Red 1TB - $85 (MTBF 1M, 500GB or 1Tb platter, 150MB/s)
    Seagate Barracuda 1TB - $68 (1Tb platter, 210MB/s)

The problem with this Seagate Barracuda 2TB @ $84 is that the model has two types of platters 666GB & 1Tb, the only way we can know which one this is by looking at their enclosures, like so… Link

    • +1

someone asked similar question on our previous post, with a fellow ozbargainer commenting that Seagate did not confirm that was the a 100% reliable way of telling which drive you'll get.

      • Ah ok thanks SE didn't see that informative post…, that narrows it down ! :P

        • +1

no worries - it's still vivid in my mind as i specifically went to check it out on that day :).

  • Hi Rep,

Just bought one yesterday for $242!!!

Can you honour the new price?

    Thanks.

    • +3

send me PM with order id

      • Thanks rep. Just PM'ed you with order number

      • I've done this too - this is the second i bought within 2 days of an ozbargain deal! Can the same apply to me prettyplease?

  • What are the seagate drives like? Any good for a NAS?

Rep, would we be able to upgrade from seagate to WD Red in the ultimate deal for some more $?

    • Unfortunately there are no Upgrade option for the ultimate combo deals. They are strictly only available with either the 1TB or 3TB Seagate Hard drive. Seagate drives are one of the popular choice for NAS, besides WD Red - and our previous post of 50 units were sold out during the deal - which is why we consider a 2nd round.

    • +2

Word of advise, avoid the Seagate drives for NAS usage at all cost. Seagate are STILL having ongoing problems with firmware bricking as they did on the last couple generations of drives and they are still stuffing around consumers rather than addressing those issues.

The WD red's are great so far for me, have both these and the greens in my N40L and N54L microservers.

  • Hmmm, I can either get a N54L with 3TB seagate or a 2TB red for roughly the same cost.

    Any suggestions?

  • If buying I would suggest the ecc ram as well. I run 4gb ecc with the supplied 2gb stick for 6gb combined, which is useful if you run windows or have lots of server stuff going on.

  • Hey Shoppingexpress, is the $148 for the WD Red 3tb only when bundling with a microserver?

I added it to my cart and it's coming up as 155 + shipping. Even with the code the price stays the same.

    cheers.

    • +2

should be fine now, $148 before bundle is the right price. sorry about this, anyone that bought the WD 3TB Red earlier with the Microserver, please double check if you've been overcharged, if so - please PM me to get it sorted thanks!

  • Apologies if this is common sense, but the specification for both the N40L and N54L state:

Maximum internal SATA storage capacity of up to 8.0TB (4 x 2TB 3.5" SATA drives)

Does this mean that each slot can only take a 2TB hard drive? or that you could do say, 2 x 3TB and 1 x 2TB and that is all you can use (i.e. one slot empty because you've hit 8TB)?

I ask because the combo offers 3TB HDD - could you get 4 x 3TB hard drives in either of these?

    • I believe you can put 4 x 4TB disks officially in, and a couple more if you use a hacked bios and utilise the CD bay.

      • +1

Can you or someone please point us to the hacked bios for the N40L?

      • thanks kearnsy!

    • yes I've got 5 x 3TB WD Reds in mine and a 120GB SSD for boot

  • My N54 cost $299 when I bought it 6 months ago….oh how prices change :) good deal!

    • +2

thanks - we cannot control price drop - but if there is, we will keep up and ensure we are always there.

  • +2

Can someone please point out a simple pro and con of the N40 vs N54 for the ruffly $30 difference? thank you! :).

    • +1

The N54L will be around 30% faster in CPU intensive apps, however as you say it costs $30 more and will also use a tad more power. If you think you need the extra performance then go for it but for general file server duties the N40L is plenty powerful.

      • Just as a follow up I already purchased a n40 on the last sale but it's still in the box, yet to be used (do not need it yet).

I have however decided to run this as a server with its primary purpose to run iTunes around the house speakers (unsure if I can run two instances off iTunes off the same library on this and my desktop computer but I hope so) via Remote Desktop and stream data, do you think the n40 can Handel it or should I look into selling it for what I paid and purchasing the n54?

I was thinking of just upgrading the NCCram (what's the real difference between that and regular ram anyway anyone?)

btw I will probably end up running windows 7 on it as well for full media centre and comparability not sure if I should fit 32 or 64 but tho, can this utilise 64 bit?

    • Also for us tight-arse ozbargainers, they use ~20W more power! That's gonna set you back about $2/year. Totally unacceptable :)

      • 20W @ 23c/kwh for 24x365 is $40.29 pa?

  • +1

Hi Rep, the N54L spec says, max 8TB (4 X 2TB), however your special is N54 with 3TB disk - are 3TB disks supported with N54L? If so, does it mean a max capacity of 12TB?

    • Hi skinny,

Although, not officially on their specs sheet - but we know that 3TB is supported with N54L and you should have no issues putting 4 x 3TBs into it.

    I have the N36 and N54.
CPU speed apparently is the only difference.
I move my VMWare ESXi 5.1 from the N36 to N54, everything worked like a charm (including the 4x4TB hitachi drives and 16GB ram). the only thing was that the MAC address had to be redone inside vmware.
Painless way to upgrade hardware and get better CPU speed.
The N54L is from OP, great company.

    • Thanks for this - Is the 16GB of RAM on N54 ecc? Also, are there any challenges using 4TB disks with N54?

Also, is there any way of doing Raid-5 instead of Raid-0/1?

edit: just found this for Raid-5 http://ahhbees.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/hp-microserver-n54l.h…

      • +1

I am no expert in this.
I am cheap and did not buy ECC.
I was not sure about the 4TB hitachi when I bought them. But so far, no issue. works just fine under vmware.

Raid for VMWare would be done by Bios instead of VMWare, and I have not done this with this microserver. Only done it via HP proliant at work. Sorry not a big help. Maybe someone else can answer that.

  • Hi Rep, what is the net weight of the N54L with a 3TB HDD inside? I plan to bring it with me in the coming overseas trip. Thanks.

    • Hi GreenRomeo -

Going by the specs sheet - N54L ~ 6kg with 1 hard drive installed

      Kind Regards

  • Hi rep, I bought Ultimate Combo 1 N40L, the shipping said $11.81 but why the total become $318.81?

    you said on the desc, Combo 1 N40L + 3TB = $299 + shipping $11.81 = $310.81 ?

    • rep, i have the same problem as andyken, why is it sum up as $318.81 and not $310.81? please clarify before it put the order through. thanks

      • Yep, still waiting from the rep, i almost click confirm payment on paypal, wait for rep confirmation tomorrow

        • me too, will wait till tomorrow, hopefully combo 1 still available.

    • With the N54L combo with the 3TB, my total is 346 including $9 shipping, meaning the combo is $337, not the listed $329. $5 off the order also isn't working when I add the 2gb seagate in addition

      • in your case, i guess according what stated by the rep:
"Note: The Combos: "Buy 3TB Seagate Drive together with HP N40L or N54L for just $299" & "Buy Seagate 1Tb drive for $49 each when you buy N40L or N54L" are not included for the $5 Bundle Bonus Offer" so $5 off with the additional 2gb seagate will not work?

Still don't know by the combo is $337 instead of $329 though, the combo i am interested in also have higher total than what i am expecting too, waiting for rep to confirm (that is if he checks this thread tonight)

        • N54L + 3TB = $329 + $12.05 Shipping comes to $349 instead, so same problem here.

Deal seems to only work properly only with the 1TB

    • Hi Guys,

Try again please - should be working now. Those that purchased combo 1 (N40L or N54L + 3TB drives) with above issues, please PM me to get it sorted. Apologizes for inconvenience caused.

      Kind Regards

    Bought a n54L to complement my n36L + 3 x 3tb reds + ECC RAM + video card

This thing better decode HD video!

  • Hmmm tempting tempting… Hopefully will still be on special tomorrow as a co-worker might be interested in buying one as well..

Any chance on a special on 2 x 8gb ECC or non-ECC memory for the N54L?

Netplus had this memory : http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/kingston-16gb-2x-8gb-1… on special for $149 when buying with a server. I realise since then the price of memory has slightly risen… Any idea when your store will have it back in stock? Would ideally like to buy at the same time to save on postage. Netplus have it for a very temping $170 but charge a pretty penny for delivery…

    • This offer ends on Sunday or while stock last. We have not been able to get the 8GB & 16Gb ram on a regular basis and it will not be available before promotion ends. I will update you though on any ETA.

      Kind Regards

      • Thank you for your reply..

I'm just about to whip up a build list for my co-worker and will in the meantime bundle standard run of the mill non ECC memory and see what they think and if they wish to proceed. I've been running my prior server with 8gb of non ECC memory now for over a year and have not had any issues (knock on wood).

I might use the feature on the site to email me when it comes back in stock.

        Thank you again!

        • Thanks for your reply :). While requesting for update of ETA from suppplier, we will be also be ordering a few of them to our site at the same time, so once you get notified via our website feature, you know we have them in stock and ready to dispatch :).

          Kind Regards

  • will the non ECC Ram work together with the 2 GB included ECC for a total of 6GB?

    • +1

I believe the memory must be identical - either all ECC or all non ecc. I could of course be wrong - just that I've never heard of anyone mixing memory in this manner.

    • +1

We would only recommend using either All ECC or All non-ECC

  • Looking for a somewhat plug n play nas. Ready nas just doesn't hold enough. Got a ton of 2tb drives to use. Will it serve multiple Wdtv style players? Don't mind running one tv off it. But I'd rather avoid the whole os mess (and benefits, yes I know). Is whs pretty simple?

  • +1

    I'm torn between purchasing a Synology DS413j for $369, and the N40L/N54L.

I'm looking more for ultra-stable NAS / RAID functionality to store media rather than running 24x7 server software apps (like email server / web server etc).

The main difference I see is power consumption.
The synology when not being used will power down the disks and hibernate.
    Power Consumption : 31.56W (Access); 7.68W (HDD Hibernation);

Has anyone got accurate power consumption figures on the N40L or N54L when the disks spindown / go idle and the CPU not being blasted?

Some people are saying 10-15w, others are saying 30w etc.

10w draw of power based on Origin energy QLD standard tariff of 21.351 cents/kWH
    365 days per year * 24 hours per day * .010 KW * .21351 $/kWH (Origin Energy) = $18.70
So, 10 watts of continuous power draw for a year costs basically $20.

So if the N40L was drawing say 30w mostly idle for a year, you are looking at $60 to run per year.
Whereas with the DS413j drawing say 10w mostly idle for a year, you are looking at $20 to run per year.
$370 in cost for DS411J versus $210 in cost for N40L = $160 difference. So if the 10w versus 30w were accurate, it would take 4 years for the DS413J to recover the costs.

One friday evening/afternoon in the pub and I can spend $160 - damn maybe I should buy the N40L :)

  • Has anyone had a 3TB WD Red drive crash/die on them yet?

I've never had issues with Hitachi deskstar 2TB in my NAS, but I'm tempted to try out the WD reds.

The reviews for multi terabyte hard drives of all brands in general are horrible. That being said, you only hear about people whom have lost a drive in web reviews. I wish we could get some accurate ratio of drives sold versus failed.

    • hi I've been running WD Reds since Nov and no issues. on 24x7 and usually do from Usenet and serve media at full 1080p

  • Hi Op,
Just received todays email form shoppingexpress and as always have some good stuff on sale.
Today you have the Netgear ReadyNas on special and of big interest is you also have the WD reds on sale if you purchase the Ready Nas.
I see their is a big difference in pricing between these two servers if you wanted the WD reds as well

    2TB - $109 With Microserver or $98 with ReadyNas

    3TB - $148 With Microserver or $133 with ReadyNas

Any chance we can get the better pricing with the HP MicroServer?

    • Ohh, now I know this I might just hold out on grabbing my new N54L. XD

    • Hi lopied,

Thanks for your generous comment. Unfortunately, the special pricing only applies for the New Netgear ReadyNas, part of the reason the ReadyNas gets the exclusive this round is to celebrate we have become one of Netgear's recommended store to buy Netgear product and we hoped to sell through more of these highly rated ReadyNAS.

      Kind Regards
      Shopping Express

      • I noticed yesterday when I added multiple drives to the ReadyNAS, the 10% off hard drives was only occurring on the 1st hard drive and not second. The email indicated the 10% for multiple drives if I remember correctly.

        • Yes, it should be on all - But with limit 2 hard drives for the 2 bay & 4 hard drive for 4 bay.
We've rectified this issue within 2 hours after promotion launch - and it should be working if you check it now.

          Kind Regards

  • Do I need a N54L? I just don't know if I do …
I have 4x4TB brand new. Was planning on putting them into my gaming rig as raid 5 - have a hardware raid card (i7 3930k, 64GB ram). Purposes of media serving, backups, running VMware.

What advantages would I get from the N54L?

  • memory - possibly off-topic

2GB chips will be surplus to those upgrading (ie, most people)
I have purchased a server and would like to populate the other socket - I'd pay a modest fee for one.
Is there a way for people to trade in their surplus chip?

    • I'm in the same boat. If anyone has any, PM me.

  • Rep, link please to the 2x8=16GB (non-ecc) memory that you support for the N54L?
Rep, anyone, link to the site that has the bios for the N54L (if required for 16GB mem support)

    • As HP did not officially said it will fit and we have not tested them ourselves, we do not want to recommend specifically on this occasion. Good place to find out more sources

  • REP, my package came yesterday and as i was getting ready to assemble everything I noticed that the bundble was incomplete, the 250GB HDD is missing, any one has the same problem?
I already lodge a ticket about it so hopefully one of your staff will attend it shortly.

    • Hi 3ah3ah,

No worries - if you already lodge a ticket, our customer support should respond to you asap. If you are very anxious you could PM me your order ID so i can have a quick look. As I am pretty surprised with 250GB drive missing in the N40L as it is pre-installed by HP.

      Kind Regards

      • Hi REP, my bad, found it, it was pre installed in the first tray, I expected it to come installed like the 3tb. Sorry about the confusion, I have also emailed your service department as well to cancel my previous ticket.
        Cheers
