Micro USB to female HDMI for generic Android phone?

Hi everyone I'm basically just looking for advice.

I've got a generic android phone that is powerful enough to output 1080p video however I'm not sure if I can play it externally. I was hoping I would be able to get a micro USB to female HDMI connector.

I've seen a couple of adapters on eBay and was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this issue and if/how they've solved it.

Do I need to find applications that support this functionality or could I just connect it and watch as the video and audio on the phone switch off and the TV comes to life?

At this point in time I believe the device has to be MHL or Mobile High-Definition Link technology… but how can I check that? I wish it was in system information or something on the phone.

  • If you have a 'generic' Android I'm assuming it ain't an upper model Samsung, HTC or other MHL compatible phone, so micro USB to HDMI is out I'm afraid. Have a look at the MHL Wikipedia page. If you have any related questions I'll try and answer them (I use MHL everyday), but it won't be tonight. MUST SLEEP! Early start.

  • If your phone supports MHL then there are two ways to do this:

1: Use an MHL cable direct from your phone to an MHL supporting TV. This will charge your phone and sent audio/video to the TV.

2: Get an MHL/HDMI cable (like the one you linked) you need to connect your phone charger up as well to this device and it will work with any HDMI TV.

Note that while you can do this with any application (as I understand it) there is one big problem. The screen content will be the same on the phone and on the TV. This means that if your phone resolution is not 1080, then the content on the TV will not be 1080 either. It looks like something was added in Jelly Bean to fix this, but I don't think it is really working yet for end users.

    • The resolution on the big screen as far media content is concerned is entirely independent of the phone's screen resolution. Entirely.
Whatever the file resolution is that you're outputting via your choice of media player is precisely what you see on screen. The only proviso relates to some cheap/old MHL adapters that have a maximum output of 720p.

If there have been any Jellybean related issues as far as app icon, in app/browser content as regards resolution, I'm unfamiliar with them. Certainly no issues in ICS. Everything pin-sharp.

All the above I suspect is academic for voolish. Sounds like he needs a new phone altogether.

      • The resolution on the big screen as far media content is concerned is entirely independent of the phone's screen resolution. Entirely.

Can you please link a reference for this information?

        http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html

Android 4.2 introduces platform support for external displays that goes far beyond mirroring — apps can now target unique content to any one or multiple displays that are attached to an Android device. Apps can build on this to deliver new kinds of interaction and entertainment experiences to users.

If the display is mirrored it is rendered to the resolution on the local device. This must happen pre-Jelly Bean. Jelly Bean apps may fix this.

        • I left out an 'as'. That aside, I am your link.
I use a Samsung GT-N7000 and a Galaxy tab7.7 everyday. Each display has 800 vertical pixels, landscape-wise. I use MHL with all manner of media everyday.
Simply put, if I play a 1080p video file using Dice Player or Moboplayer or MX, it displays effectively as no better than 720p on the display of each device. On the big screen it is in FULL 1080p.
Believe me, if I play an otherwise identical (dare I say, content 'mirrored') Youtube video via wi-fi, through the phone, in 720p and then in 1080, the difference on the big screen is obvious. Very.
As I indicated above, there may well be Jellybean related issues as regards screen resolution scaling being output over MHL (I don't know and I'm not going looking today) but no such issues exist with ICS.
Sorry if I seem a little tetchy Bruce. I'm having a lousy one.
