5000 Are Invited to a Free Hot Lunch in Sydney’s Martin Place on 29 July between 12 and 2pm

890
Be considerate when selecting number of tickets.

Feeding the 5000 is an event run by OzHarvest, one of Australia’s leading food-rescue organisations that was named the official Australian partner of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) global campaign - Think.Eat.Save.

Food will be made from rescued ingredients that would otherwise have been wasted, such as fresh but cosmetically imperfect fruit and vegetables, surplus cream or flour that would have been dumped or excess unused lemon juice! Feeding the 5000 will highlight how easy it is to reduce the unimaginable levels of food waste in Australia and internationally, and how governments, businesses and individuals can help.

Sydney’s top chefs along with hundreds of OzHarvest volunteers will unite against food waste and serve up a free meal to 5000 members of the public.

    Thank you
Free food to a good cause

    Syd Ozbargain meetup anyone :D

    • Sounds like fun. Ozbargainers at a free food event.

      • -1

Are you going to be their Scotty !!

        • Maybe not this time. Already enough left-over food to consume at home.

  • +22

couldn't they do something with the homeless + respective organisations? just a thought i guess..

    • +3

Won't get as much attention that way.

      • do the homeless use ozbargain, on their computer via their internet connection?
        a day old newspaper maybe.

        • do the homeless use ozbargain, on their computer via their internet connection?

Maybe they use it on their 2nd hand smartphone, at a free wifi hotspot. They have those in the city.

        • mmm plausible, but how would they charge that phone?

        • There are lots of power points around, you just need to keep your eyes open. I know this isn't Sydney but I once saw a homeless man in Washington DC use a laptop outside a coffee shop at about 10pm on my way back to the hotel… His laptop was plugged into a power outlet outside the coffee shop, presumably using the free wifi.

      • nvm

    • +2

      They do. From their website:

      "Hi,

My name is Ken and I am a rough sleeper. I have been living on the streets of Sydney for the past 10 years and I am 62 years old.

The past 10 years have been very hard on both mind and body, but one thing has made the past five years bearable and that is OzHarvest. They don't only feed people like me with fresh and nutritious food but they supply drop-in centers right across Sydney. We, the homeless, are forever grateful for the caring people of OzHarvest.

We love and thank you OzHarvest.

      Ken."

    • Er - I think that's what they do every day anyhow.

"OzHarvest is a non-denominational charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. This excess food is distributed to charities supporting the vulnerable in Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide and Brisbane.

  • Sounds just like the soup kitchens they have every evening in Sydney parks, except a better clientele, you hope.

    • +5

"better clientele" ? So that makes homeless people a "worse clientele"? In what sense? Please explain.

        • +6

          Wow. Simply wow.

How is life in your bubble?

        • -6

I'd ask to hear your side of the story, but you'd only be able to tell me what you read on the internet. Bubble indeed.

        • -5

Pmuppsinep may have sounded like a douche, but tbh hes right.

I myself immigrated from a 3rd world, and Australia is pretty top notch when it comes to welfare. Centrelink and all these other pensions, theres no reason really. We have family friends that came illegally on boats, had a pretty crap standard of living, now their kids are probably earning more than 70% of the population.

Then you see these homeless people having cigarettes, drinking beer instead of water. Anyone who works in sydney cbd would most likely even know a particular guy outside of myers. I haven't worked in the city for 2 years now, but I'll bet he's still there bumming.

        • I don't see a source in your original comment either.

        • Bro…that is low…
I hope you have ever heard a thing called…compassion?
If u dont want to help the homeless then don't but don't judge them.

          Oh btw… They're not bums… They're human like u and I

        • like u and me

        • +7

Having been VERY close to it about 15 years ago (as in having less than $80 to pay for rent and food for a week), living on instant noodles for most of the week… I don't judge anyone living on the streets. I don't for a minute assume they're druggies, uneducated or one of your other statements.

And if i am very honest… i'd rather share a meal with a homeless person than with someone like you.

Do me a favour. Some time this week, buy a homeless person a cup of coffee on the way to work. Ask them why they're there.

        • I haven't worked in the city for 2 years now, but I'll bet he's still there bumming.

Yeah. The housing market keeps going up… it's getting harder to get that downpayment together to get a loan from the bank.
That and Australia Post don't deliver to "the corner of George and Market Sts". Not a valid address.

          /end sarcasm

        • A large proportion of homeless people(not all) are uneducated, unemployed drug addicts. Therefore they are worse clientele compared to… pretty much everyone.

And how do get the information to form these opinions pmupsinep? Do you spend much time with homeless or you just absorb knowledge as you walk by and scoff?

Sit down and chat with some of these people one day when you're a bit older and you'll understand how wrong you are

        • @krisspy
Medicare guy? (for the lack of a way to describe him) Camps out on the corner facing towards Town Hall? Haven't been to Sydney for a few months but last time I was there there were two Navy guys selling ANZAC gear and he was outside QVB. Seen him down at China Town every now and then too. It's sad to see him out on the street like that for year after year.

      • +10

So sad that so many people judge without knowing anything about any of the people living rough.

  • +1

Some of Sydney’s top chefs along with hundreds of OzHarvest volunteers will unite against food waste and serve up a free meal to 5000 members of the public.

How about serving a DECENT portion size at their restaurants… Now THAT would cause less waste.

    • +2

But if they made sensible portion sizes, you'd feel more ripped off at the $25 price tag…

    • +2

more like how about wasting less food since food is inherently not straight but they insist of cutting everything into perfect batons or for things that are straight, to 'turn the vegetable' and cut bits off it for no reason

      • Is that an all you can eat buffet? Cause that would make sense.

  • when i saw the logo which looks like fruit piled on an upturned trash can lid i read this as free lunch for homeless people! which reminded me of that episode of Extreme Cheapskates where this CPA was going dumpster diving….for food!
ps i already got 2 tix for the good food & wine show so someone else can have these

  • +3

A true ozbargainer wouldn't waste food

    • +3

wasting money perhaps for impulse buying;)

  • +9

fellas, please pass these info on to the homeless that are camping out at martin place or claim it on their behalf.

  • Great deal! Happen to be in Sydney on that day!

  • +2

I wonder if this will be a masterchef challenge!

    • id turn up just to see Matt preston…he's a beast…lol ;)

      • +2

If he's there, at least 4,000 people will go hungry…

        • hahaha i could imagine that

  • +2

Great deal but I'd rather line up at my wife's kitchen for food than trek all the way into the city on a weekend which will cost me $7. BTW I'm always eating leftovers from the fridge as I'm trying to ensure we throw as little food out on rubbish night, although some of it ends up in the compost bin.

    • +2

      weekend? July 29 is Monday!

      • My bad thought it was this month!

  • -6

    Just got 10! :)

    • and i just got 4990 ticket, 25 lemon trees, 80 subway 6inch's, 10 dominoes, 18 hot choclates, 115 free F&W passes, 10 boxes of coat hangers…he doesn't get the point…sad :(

    • do you intend to sell them on ebay to pay for your children's education?

      • if i could sell them and pay for the education i probably would! No shame.

BUT, I got them for the office staff. We are close by, and it should be a good. Thank you for your judgement.

        • neg revoked

  • So I take it people would be getting different meals then. Bit hard to give 5000 people the same meal from leftovers. I hope people who go post some pics ;-)

  • +3

    Five loaves and two fishes

  • I assume they're feeding the general public to raise awareness, we certainly don't need the free food. ><

  • This looks like a great gospel opportunity. Even the name of the event makes it inviting for evangelists.

    looking forward to it

  • Great got one

  • +1

I never waste food. I chewed and swallowed all the fat on my meat tonight. It was delicious.

    • Don't forget the bones. They're a good source of calcium.

      • I eat the marrow but the bones I have trouble chewing. They go to the cat.

  • Not a huge fan of this one - great OzBargain deal…somewhat questionable morals.

Why not cook the food for the homeless?

Edit: then again, I realise that this event wouldn't have happened without them…creating it. I can't be angry they didn't do it that way because it's surplus to what would happen with this organisation removed from the equation. Just would have been my initial thought: "free food" - for the homeless.

  • A good way to generate publicity and awareness but it sounds like chaos

    • +2

yup! 5000 people to be served in 120 minutes, that's an average of 41.6 people per minute, get ready to queue….

  • FYI, this is today.
