Sal Khan's Khan Academy (viewable at KhanAcademy.org) provides thousands of short -online- video tutorials, eg, under the banner-line:
- "Learn almost anything for free"
At the moment, they seem to cover traditional school & uni subjects, like Maths, Science, Finance, etc., but this could change.
(They must be doing -something- right, ie, to have attracted funding from both the 'Gates Foundation and Google, as well as earning esteemed places in classrooms around the world.)
As a teacher, I've used them - in both suburban & rural schools, over the years - but we had to have a working Internet connection to enable access to Sal's excellent tutorial videos, etc.
So, what about those who are living, learning, teaching or working in places with very costly (or no) Internet service?
Or… what to do if your kids want to explore or revise some of their school subjects, eg, while traveling to a holiday destination - by car - on school holidays, etc.?
Now… where ever you have a working compatible computer, tablet or netbook… you or your kids can learn from Khan Academy tutorial videos:
We found a group of tutors in Adelaide, who've been installing subsets of the Khan Academy video collection (eg, Geometry, within Maths) into privately owned computers… for a fee for their member's time.
(These videos are licensed under a Creative Commons license, so it's OK.)
Each tutor-installer offers a cost-free demo KhanAcademy.org's Coach & Practice modes, which can be used by a student and a tutor (possibly connected by Skype or phone) to help preclude the student getting stuck - too long - on a single type of problem.
(Post visit Person-to Person-tutoring time -not- included.)
I don't get it… whats the deal?
