The mix of cultural habits is interesting. Being from India, we always use water to finish off our business (well most of the population does at least). I think many Asian countries do this. When I moved to Australia in 2007, I adapted to toilet paper and now the idea of making the toilet paper wet (moistened) seemed like a natural progression !

I think you're thinking of two different things. Bidet is a separate basin with it's own taps, the 'bum gun' is just a hose with spray attached that you use on the toilet.

Toilet paper is a lot more expensive and the quality isn't always that great in other countries hence the traditional use of water. The Japanese and French have the right idea with a bidet (esp. built in to the one unit). It's probably the most cost effective (over the lifespan of the toilet) and environmentally friendly way to go. Add a built in hand basin like thisthat's finally available in Aust (I used one of these in Japan years ago) and you've got the best use of space, water savings and encouragement to wash hands too! Even if a small amount of paper is used to dry off at the end you still save.
