Slicer Dicer Worth Getting?

Hello guys, recently my mother saw the slicer dicer (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l131…) on TV, and said she wanted me to purchase one for her.

Now I have no idea about this product so I wanted to ask you guys incase any of you had experience with it.
Is it worthwhile to purchase?, and does it get the advertised job done?

To me it just looks fragile and I doubt it works properly.
If it doesn't get the job done, do you have any recommendations for similar products.

Thank you

Check out some of the videos on Youtube. Doesn't work well at all. Only works on soft foods and you have to smash it at full strength to get it to work right.

    • do you even lift bro?

I've got a similar product from Deals Direct. The blades aren't very sharp and won't easily pierce the 'skin' of many fruits. For vegetables you've got to be forceful and you won't get very clean cuts.

Buy a decent chefs knife and learn how to use it well - trust me it'll get the job done much better

I have a Borner brand V-slicer (not a dicer) and it works great on potato and pumpkin.. Whizz through spuds in seconds with minimal preparation.
Great for Potato Bake, bit of a bugger to clean though.

I completely agree with inasero. I am a professional chef and most of those things are just gadgets and not worth having.

The Wife bought one of these on these on the sly, I don't buy infomercial crap because they're crap. As suspected the Nicer Dicer/Slicer is crap. You have to cut the items down to size, and then force it through the not very sharp blades, clean up can be a hassle as well. IMO it's faster to just use a knife, you'll have it out to cut the veges down to size anyway.

  • Thanks guys, yeah just as I thought, it is worthless junk.
Same here, I never buy infomercial rubbish.

Just wanted to get her something to help make the kitchen work slightly less tiring for her.

Since I have no experience in any kitchen equipment. Can you guys post links of good chef knife, etc that you have or have used.

I don't know the price of reasonable kitchenware, but $50 is around my limit for a knife. Can anything reasonable be obtained for that amount or less?

It really doesn't work. It worked fine the first day somewhat. The actual build quality is very poor.

I'm sure I seen a Australian made version somewhere.

That one might work well but it may be the same as above just with a sticker with "Australian Made" added on here in Australia therefore making it Australian made…

    Hi OP

If you're mother is like my MIL and has strength issues (MIL's hands have started to shake also) you could grab her a Chop & Prep chef from Tupperware.

She can put an onion in there and with a couple of pulls of the cord it's diced, couple more and it's almost puree… I got one for myself after seeing her use it and I use it almost daily for little things. I also bought her the larger version but I don't reccommend it at all as it's a gear mechanism, not a pull-cord and needs a bit of strength behind it.

Don't use shallots in this, the 'mucus' inside them turns everything to sludge…

  • Unfortunately missed the Target knife deal.

The tupperware thing while nice, isn't what im looking for, though thanks for informing me about it. It seems to primarily be used for soft stuff, and leaves, etc. Im looking for something that can be used on hard objects, such as potatoes, carrots, cucumber, onions, etc.

So yeap probably will need to find a decent knife. Any other suggestions of good knives or other gadgets?

    • forgot to add earlier - try before you buy :)

  • Are the Scanpan knifes anygood? I bought this with the last Grays $20 off voucher.

    http://www.graysonline.com/retail/18160/homewares-and-gifts/…

Cost me $29 reduced from $149.

  • Depending on what shapes/quantaties of things you are wanting cut up, a food processor could be a goer with the different discs/blades. But if only small quantaties, just an extra thing to clean up.
