$99 Vodafone Huawei G300+ Prepaid Mobile Phone @DSE

180

Huawei G300+ is back on sale for $99. It's a 4" IPS (800x480), single-core, ICS-upgradable smartphone with 1500maH battery. G300+ preferred over G300 as it supports 850, 900 and 2100Mhz 3G bands. G300 misses the 900Mhz band needed for best Optus coverage. Supposedly some OW stores have these so PM for another 5% off.

  • Good value, I think. Especially with the tri-band 3G.

    Yes, but Vodafail.

    • Yes, but easily unlocked - read the links kindly supplied by the OP.

    • I love how people who don't use Vodafone call it a fail.

Fastest 4g on oz (constantly beats my Telstra sim
      Best value plans.
Optus needing to use their network to fix their own

      Optus fail maybe.

How do you know DSE ordered 2000 units? Are you working at DSE HQ?

    • Went to a DSE store look to for a P1 @ $199. Guy looked up stock levels, 0 across Australia. Said they were selling for $48 at one stage likely reason why. Said DSE put in an order for 2000 of them and were awaiting delivery.

      • +1

        unlikely…

      • I just read a review of the P1 here; http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/hua… seems excellent. Really impressive super amoled screen etc $48 …are you sure??
Please let everyone know if they really are getting 2000 more of them and especially if the price goes anywhere near $48!!

      • Unlikely a staff member would know how much stock HO have on order.

        • Next time go to a DSE store and ask for a P1 and he'll look it up for you. @KTA, yes $48. I did a double-back to ensure I heard correctly. The guy assured said they won't be selling at that price. I would have bought all store stock of the P1 if they had stock @$48ea.

        • Its a year old phone, more likely that the order has not been cleared from the system.
          Trust me.

No way on earth this phone is going for $48 in any volume, maybe an odd return/repack. Many of us watch this market segment very closely and there's no way that would get by us.

        • ok ok . Keep an eye out for the ascend p1 @ dick smith.
          Seems legit.

  • A positive vote from me just for the effort that the OP put into the post.

i wouldnt get on ebay normally but i see y300 telstras for cheaper than $129 and a bit more for vanilla unlocked ones…

Thanks OP. Looking at the list it's hard to draw a line for value. Buy what you can afford I guess and you can't go wrong. I really prefer a 4.0" phone but it looks like they are missing out a little on specs and you have to go larger for higher specs now.

    • Agree. Top bang for buck choices here OP.

  • G300 misses the 900Mhz band needed for best Optus coverage.

So this is talking about the G300+ i take it?

I've got the G300, at least i think i have - bought it Sep 2012 - unlocked from Vodafone & stuck an Optus SIM card in it (well, WOW $29 deal).

If my memory serves me correctly, the 900MHz is mainly up country. I avoid the country because i hate cows.

Can't send/receive images with this little bugger - not entirely sure why but i seem to recall others having the same problem.

Got this phone last time for $99, free unlock with voda and now on boost (got the G300+) and updated to ICS. however it isn't the fastest and have had random reboots. Good bang for buck when I needed a phone quick but probably wouldn't recommend to most as permanent solution.

Got this last time $99 from dse. It stopped working after 2 weeks. Buttons would flash 10 times and that's it. Dse returned it for repair and after 5 weeks of no updates (dse said it is with huawei repairs and huawei said that dse never send it in), Dse eventually refunded the money.
As by that time, there wasn't any stock available, we ended up getting through Y300 from Telstra. It seems better than the g300+.

      • I bought one from Target a few weeks back and had the same problem! I haven't returned it yet, though..

  • Dick smith no longer use PayPal? or am I dreaming they never did? lol

  • I bought this one last time it was $99, it hasn;'t lasted and is as slow as a snail.. i have the bare minimum apps running and it's still run out of space… It has 4GB built in and no option for move to sd.. the actual App partition is limited to a further 1GB with 3gb used for photos and downloads etc.
    Avoid your troubles.

  • I have had the 300+ for a couple of months ($99 from Target, free unlock from Voda) and it is a brilliant phone for the basic work I expect it to do.

It is quite easy to move apps using a free app such as AppMgr lll. You also need to make the SD card the default storage location under Storage Settings in the main Settings menu (using ICS).

  • For what its worth G300 (or G300+) for that matter don't have enough ram/cpu grunt power to make using Android 4.x a smooth experience :/.

    • YMMV.

But if you are looking for a guaranteed smooth experience, there are a number of $300+ phones out there.

      • YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary.

        TFTNN*

        *Thanks for that numb nuts.

        • Are we related?

        • Hard to say.

Do you look like any of these guys?

          Ooh, the flashbacks.

        • No - are they from your family album?

    • YMMV indeed. G300 works fine with the standard ICS Huawei upgrade but better with any of the more performance orientated modded ICS ROMS (slim, stock+, MIUI 2.7.6, Tesla) that run with less overhead, support overclocking, use hw GPU rendering and in some cases give great task control for memory management. There's even Jelly Bean ROMS for the G300. Now they do need a more powerful handset to get smooth performance.

The G300 has a huge modding community with a large selection of custom ROMs available. Contrast against say the Aldi phone where owners are only just in the process of trying to root the device.

  • Make sure to ask staff at DS to check on the system for a better price. Will knock $9.00 off the price. Worked for me !

  • $99 is the standard price at any Vodafone store.

As its a prepaid handset the following charges apply to unlock.

Within 12 months of activation $75
    After 12 months $25
    Never activated: $100.

As this handset was ONLY sold as a prepaid there is no way to avoid these fees.

    • That's the Vodafone official line. In practice the phone can be unlocked in one of three ways:

      1. You put the G300's IMEI on Vodafone unlock website and will receive an unlock code in 48hours. Many success stories doing this after purchasing their Vodafone prepaid G300/G300+ unit.

      2. Should there be any difficulties with (1) then you simply contact bagman per Huawei Y100, G300, G300+ Unlock Codes $5 to sort you out.

      3. Or if you are technically minded, consider a self-unlock per How to FREE SIM unlock your G300 (modaco.com) instructions.

      • Yeah I agree with points two and three.

        On point one;
Vodafone has recently updated its unlock database and as such phones which previously did not provide unlock codes automatically are now listed. As such the g300 and g300+ are now listed as prepaid devices with the relevant unlock code charges attached.

        I speak from experience.

        • Thanks for the update.

So then can proceed to either pay bagman $5 to get the unlock code or the techy TAs can do a self-unlock. Using Symo's tip: "Make sure to ask staff at DS to check on the system for a better price. Will knock $9.00 off the price. Worked for me !" can cover bagman's cost with some leftover change.

Means can get a tri-band unlocked 4" ICS smartphone for as little as $91 with Huawei's 2 year local warranty. Hard to beat for value.

        • So far it appears that majority of the people who posted on this site and on whirlpool were able to unlock their G300/G300+ for free from the vodaphon website.
