VIEW - Is it overrated??

Hello all,

We always pay a bit extra and sometimes a premium to get a room with a view in a hotel, resort etc., Is waking up and soaking up to the view and to pay extra bucks really that important while on holidays??

Yes, I agree, sometimes it gives you great pictures which will be great memories down the lane but I could not justify paying too much for the view.

Thoughts please.

  • I'd say no the view is not worth the premium, but you seem to enjoy it so keep on enjoying it.
When I look back on a holiday, I think about the place and the fun things that were done and the great food that was eaten. Thoughts of view does not come into my reminiscing.

  • Depends on the view and how much you pay for it. Normally I wouldn't bother but I had a great view of the strip in Las Vegas and it only cost an extra $20 for the whole stay.

    • This.
When I'm on holiday, my accommodation is 99% just a place to sleep and shower, and maybe eat.
If I'm eating there, then the view might provide something to "entertain" me and therefore worth something.
Otherwise, the view is useless to me when I'm asleep or in the shower!

    • Hi Donga,
can you please provide name of hotel? Dont mind some with for $20 :-)

      • Signature at MGM Grand. Booked it direct with owner through vrbo.com which also meant I didn't ned to pay the resort fee. Total price was about $1000 for 10 nights stay in a 1br with spa bath and balcony. This was March 2012 so it might be a little bit more now due to exchange rate.

  • To me I like the view from the next trip that I can now afford vs the view from a Hotel window.

But if I didnt have the time to make the extra trips, then I guess taking in the view from the hotel would be worthwhile.

In other words its all trade offs, money vs time, and as they say time is money… and of course how much is paid for the view and what the view is.

  • Depends on the location and how long you are staying.

If you are in a quiet lakeside village and you are staying a week and plan to spend any time in the hotel just relaxing, then yes a view can be nice.

If you are staying 2 nights in Vegas and plan to sleep all day and stay up all night, then no, a view isn't worth it.

  • I completely agree with Smulder.

If you are on honeymoon, spend a bit extra for a room with a better view since you will spend more time in the hotel.

If you are on holidays and do a lot of outdoor activities, I believe that most of the time, you need the room for shower and sleep only. In that case, why should you spend a few more bucks for the view?
