Advice on kitchen appliances etc

Howdy Ozbargain

I'm having my house renovated, including a new kitchen.

I'm in Sydney. Do we recommend / warn away from any particular suppliers, manufacturers or models?

After real value - happy to spend the money to get something that delivers real benefits, not looking to just splash out on a fancy brand.

We'll need:

<edit> - also need a clothes drier to go in an outdoor laundry!
- standard size dishwasher
- gas oven and cooktop
- good range hood (we cook greasy!)

Any hints and tips much appreciated, plus any websites to look at for colour/layouts ideas.

Cheers,
MrDixit.

  • Personally I'd go with deluxe appliances online.
    See http://www.euappliances.com/

  • I've always found productreview.com.au very helpful when it comes to choosing appliances.

We loved our simple model Dishlex that we bought in our last place.

  • There's a million choices, so you'd need to provide us with more info if you want real feedbackgas cooktop 4 or 5 burner (w/wock burner), oven size, w/ seperate grill, rangehood size/slide away/glass or steel?! Anyhow, imo it's easier to do the research yourself based on some select models/brands you want over at productreview.com.au! Good luck!

    • Cheers. Fyi small kitchen so standard oven with 4 burners, probably no wok burner because I have a guai lo flat bottom wok. On range hood, that's probably the kind of hints I am after. You are right, doing my own research but it's hard to tell the marketing garbage from goods advice…

  • From my experience Miele dishwashers are hard to beat - wash well, quiet, reliable.

  • Miele for quality, reliability and stuff that just works!
Bonus- No hunting for best prices because miele sets the price - retailers just 'Supply'

    • Pretty sure resale price maintenance is illegal…

      • Fyi I worked out how miele and asko get around resale price maintenance issues. Store is not a reseller, but an agent for the distributor. The purchase contact is direct with distributor. I managed to find a bunch of ex demo and damaged box asko gear, so got some discounts of sorts. Don't appreciate the resale price maintenance, but the great looks extremely well made.

    • Meile clearance outlet in Knoxfeild. Would have 10-15% off ticket prices, located directly behind their gallery.

  • Meile make a quality, long lasting appliance, service and support backed. Price is higher but the stuff just works, no issues. You can get more features for less money, better design for less money, but if you want long lasting quality you must consider Meile.

My last Meile dishwasher worked the same 10 years in as it did on day one and considering it cost the same as the mid to top of the line LG/DISHLEX/Fisher Paykel etc, I'd say that it was a bargain. I've bought Meile for the new kitchen (all appliances bar fridge), backing my opinion.

In the higher price bracket there's choices but then if price is not issue you're in the wrong forum.

  • I also recommend getting a Choice membership. Wealth of information there and all the products are independently tested. Costs about $7 a month (min 3 months) and is well worth the price of admission.
