Digital radio that can record

Any recommendations for a digital radio that can record? (to SD card or network or something)

My wife likes to record various gardening programs and other stuff from the radio, she currently does this via a radio plugged into the line in on her laptop but constantly has problems. We've been thinking of getting a digital radio and if there's one that records too then she'll be sold on it. Even better if it can play audio from our NAS too (eg. streamed etc). Does such a thing exist?

  • Grundig Model GDR740DABER has EPG (Electronic Program Guide) and Record features . The Electronic Program Guide allows you to see what shows will be played on your favourite stations and what’s on for the week ahead. Making it easy for you to plan what you listen to and provides you with more information than ever before. The REPLAY is perfect for radio lovers as you can record your favourite programs or songs via your own SD Card. Create a mix tape of favourite songs to share or listen to later. Check below link.

  • While technically such a thing would be easy to make, I am not aware of any existing. I guess you can thank RIAA/ARIA/Whatever.

Note that many radio prgrams are streamed on the internet, and almost any internet stream can be recorded, this might suit you.

Edit: I was wrong. Recording internet streams might still be worth considering though.

  • At the time I bought my Pure Evoke Flow about 3 years ago, the primary motivation was that it had a remote and lots of presets. There were other Pure models that offered rewind/record, and definitely one that would do so onto an sd card.

My model is internet capable, but only over wi-fi. Will also stream files from a computer, although I've never needed to even try. A number of other internet capable models with a wired LAN connection exist - from a number of manufacturers.
Whether you can find something with all the features you're looking for in one unit, is for you - or for someone with more time than I've got right this minute - to discover!

  • the grundig one looks interesting, any idea what type or format the file is stored in on the SD card? if it's mp3 or something that can be copied to her ipod that might be ideal.

we have tried looking for streams/podcasts of the programs, some of the ABC ones are podcast but many don't seem to be, we thought just recording the radio would be simpler.

  • Are the programs available on the radio channels of DTV? If so, will a PVR equipped with EPG record them to say a USB stick?

In my setup I have a digital radio connected to the line in of an always on machine. A DIY NAS based on Linux could double up for this task.

  • A simple recording program on her laptop could capture any show that is broadcast over the Internet, which most ABC shows are. You can usually choose the format to save the file in.

  • no not available on DTV. Most (of what she wants anyway) aren't podcast and recording on her laptop fails more often than it works. I'm sure it would work better recording on a linux box but a simple radio that records as well would be the simplest and easiest to use. I'll look into some of the suggestions thanks (eg. the grundig and pure models).
